I can't believe FF8 sold so well. Or the Nintendo64 games. That's a lot of N64 games sold for such an unpopular system.

Why can't you believe they sold so well. The N64 games are all ground-breaking and have been ripped off in so many ways since. Mario 64 was the first 3D platformer, Zelda is one of the greatest 3D adventure/rpg games of all time, Goldeneye was the first FPS to have a good multi-player, with a solid single player game. Smash bros meant you could beat the crap out of pikachu.

FF8 sold so well because everyone was expecting an amazing follow-up to FF7. It got rave reviews and sold a bucket, even though I don't think it was anything particularly brilliant.

Also, where did you get these figures, are they US only? Because Zelda sold that amount in Europe alone, as well as some of the other games.

I would also like to know how the numbers were calculated. I think the big reason the N64 games are on there is because those were the ONLY good games for that system :) EVERYONE who had a N64 had those games, because they were the only ones worth buying.

If the PS got rid of 500 of their crappiest titles, I'm sure their good ones would have sold better.

N64 unpopular? I dunno, I think it did pretty good compared to what it had to go against. Atari Jaguar, now THAT was unpopular. And as Mankey said, the N64 did have some pretty ground breaking titles and hardware for a console. Mario rewrote the book (or perhaps truely written?) on 3D platformers and made kart style racing re-heally popular. Goldeneye brought FPS gaming with solid multiplayer and strategic shooting (AFAIK, nothing else on a console prior gave you the ability to shoot body parts and have the target react appropriately) to the consoles. Not even the PC games at the time had this (Quake II was the rage around this time, and I'm pretty sure it didn't have shootable hit locations).

After seeing all of the copy cat games and controllers, I have to say: while the N64 may not have beaten the PS1, it had a major impact on the industry.

Wasn't Sega's Virtua Cop on the Saturn long before GoldenEye hit? At the very least, the VC coin-op was in arcades in 1994...

IMO, the N64 is the weakest of all the Big N's gaming ventures.

Sylentwulf nailed it. With so few titles N64 owners flocked to the same games. And as it happened they were all outstanding efforts from that generation. I wonder if there are any N64 owners here who *don't* actually own those titles. I certainly do.

The N64 was definitely a failure compared to Gameboy, NES, and SNES. But those are awfully big shoes to fill. Virtual Boy would have to take the cake though. I still don't have one of those (and I don't much care if I get one either).

I was surprised N64 games sold so well, because N64 consoles sold very poorly. Like the GameCube now.

Almost 30 million N64s were sold worldwide. I'd hardly say that was poor :P

In comparison to the PS1 yes, but not overall...

How many PS1s were sold?

I heard it was nearing the 80 million mark. But I could be completely wrong.

3 PS1s sold for every N64 sold. And yet, the number 1 game is a N64 game. I expected the PS1 games to outsell N64 games by 3 to 1.

theaveng...

I believe the PS2 did outsell by MORE than 3-1 gamewise. But realise: the N64 US library is under 300 games; the PS1 is almost 1200 - still hit driven, but not so much so.

On an interesting note, I believe the PS2 has already cracked 30 million worldwide; wonder if it'll beat the PS1 total.

Sony announced that the PS2 had sold 40 million lost month. It had sold 10 million since the release of the Xbox and Gamecube, which I think is quite sad.

The PS2 is just like the PS1. PS2 outsold the competition 3 to 1.
