How many of you are planning on making the trek to CGE2K4 by plane? How many of you will hitting the open road and driving there? And if you're driving, how far of a drive is it for you?
It's no secret that I absolutely hate flying and avoid it at all costs. San Jose is a 24 hour drive from here. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Well technically I can drive from springfield, mo to san jose, but uh HELL NO! *laugh* That would be too many mile sto put on my car, and too much hassle. There comes a time when spending money to ease the hassle of travel is a welcome relief. I just wish it was a little earllier as I come right from here and start class:)

I feel the same way as you, but Maine to San Jose just IS NOT WORTH the drive, no matter how much I want to be there. Even cost-wise, it's more economical to fly (counting in 3 days on the road, gas, food, wear & tear on the vehicle, lodging, an oil change or three for all the miles *lol*) So, I'll just grin and bear the *gulp* seven hours in flight.

7 hours flying? Pah! :P
It's gonna be about 13 hours minimum for me to get my arse to SJ now...

Let's see, I could fly from SFO to San Jose. The would take 4 hours
or
I could drive there in one hour.
Guess I will drive.
Seriously folks, I feel for all of you who are flying or driving any apprciable distance or time. Last year I was on the road 12 hours. Probably not as much as some of you out there.

I'd love to drive from Michigan as I have limited traveling experience. However, 35 hours via car alone isn't my idea of a good time. I'll most likely fly.

Yes, but I don't recall you having any apprehensions about flying!

Ha! I'm a true white knuckle flyer, but I can swallow my fear for three reasons:
1. I have to fly a lot for business travelling in my job. So I'm flying cross-country several times a year. Ergo, I've learned to just deal with it, as it's part of my career. (Funny note: I'll be flying to San Fran and back TWICE this year prior to my San Jose trip. :eek 2: YUp, nothing like THREE Ohio to California trips for this yellow chicken.
2. I love the convience of flying. Step aboard the scary tube-in-the-sky, and 5 hours later, you're pretty much anyplace in the US you want to be. Beats the hell out of a 16 hour drive. It's like magic to me as far as the speed of it.
3. I'm a theme park fanatic and there's no thrill ride I won't climb on. So my wife asked me "YOu'd ride a roller coaster if the track ran right into a brick wall, but sitting in a flying chair for an hour scares you?" She has a point. I can't be a fearless coaster nut if I can't sit still on a motionless plane.
Ergo, I'll be in San JOse. And I'll punch the first person in the neck who begins singing "Do you know the way to....you know..."

The other thing I hate (besides flying) is arriving at a town and not having a car. If I did end up flying I would rent a car for sure.
When it gets closer to the date and people are starting to make their final plans, maybe we'll get a "carpool" thread going.

I also hate flying. I hate to fly (Haven't been on a plane since I was about 6), and, I hate to ride in an elevator. I always take the stairs unless I have no choice.
I can't see driving from Ohio to Cali. I would love to do it (Road Trip), but, I think it would be better to fly. I guess I wil just have to suck it up.

Nothing to worry about, you'll be fine :)
Anything I can do to calm your nerves, let me know :P
And if that means paying for your flight this year... ah we'll see ;)

You did it already in the other CGE thread :)
And Mat, you're a sweetheart, and I still will never be able to thank you enough for last year!

Flack,
I'm planning to fly, and will probably leave via Will Rogers airport in OKC. (Although DFW is an option, because I live in southern Oklahoma, about 1 & 1/2 hours north of Dallas.)
I've enjoyed the flight to Vegas the last 3 CGE's that I have attended, and would recommend it over a long drive.

I've done the long-distance drive thing before - from Green Bay to western Arkansas and back again in a three-day weekend (though two of those days were spent driving) - but Arkansas to California is one hell of a drive, especially for someone like me who doesn't have the keenest sense of direction. LOL
As much as I'd like to fly so I can read, listen to music, and play some GBA goodness en route, and have it take only a few hours, one of these days I'd like to try driving as well, so I can listen to music and sing en route. A day of my life without singing and I start going through withdrawals. :P

Yeah, but if your feet are hurting and you wanna get off of 'em, hotel bathtubs are great for lounging in and playing some PS1 games.
Ummmm...so I've heard. :embarrassed:

Don't forget playing videogames. My van has a flip down LCD screen, RCA inputs, and a power plug-in right below the rear seat.
For the last month or so I've had that 76000-in-1 game player out there, hooked up to it. My wife, son and I all carpool in the morning, so I make her drive and Mason and I sit in the back, taking turns playing Donkey Kong and Popeye. I have two Dreamcasts coming from Autobotracing, and one of them is going to become permanently (or at least semi-permanently) mounted in the fan. I'm thinking about some sort of velcro strap system that lets me secure game systems in place but easily swap them out.
Oh, and as far as finding the place ... my laptop has a GPS unit. It's already saved me on more than one road trip. Just punch in an address and away you go!

Lemme see... If I had a full month off and had a car, I guess we'd go the road way (and I'd be able to convince Steve to come along, if only to go visit his uncle in SF). But, since this is not the case (I only get 2 weeks off and I don't even know yet if my vacation dates will correspond to CGE), I have to think of something else...
I'm flying there. If there were a high speed train network throughout North America, I'd be hesitating, but in this case, there isn't any hesitation. I can see it from here: a 7-hour flight (or so) from Montreal to San Jose, with a stop at the Toronto airport. Vive the GBA SP (of course, I may want to play it safe and get myself one of those third-party li-ion battery with mini-screwdriver for it).
Shit, I really, really need to start putting money aside!!!!!!!
