View Full Version : Virtual Boy Unrelased Games

A friend of mine recently scored a nice bundle on EBay and now has a working Virtual Boy and most of the released US games for it.

We were talking about the short life of the system (less then a year) and all the games that either seemed complete and ready to be released or were at least playable in some form when the plug was pulled. I'm hardly a expert on the system, but I don't recall seeing any of those games released or made available to the public yet, unlike many of the Atari and other eariler games.

So, has anything been released since the system died? Is it possible to burn a ROM of a game onto a Virtual Boy cart? Any chance that we may someday get to play these dozens of games that were finished or almost done for this system?

I can't help but wonder if technology comes down to price where they could do the VB in full color that it would sell like hotcakes. ;)

Just curious on how much he paid for the stuff?

I have'nt seen it yet, mind you (and maybe not for a while -- he's in NH and working full time) but he told me he got the unit, a carrying case, and about ten games for $125 plus shipping. Seems okay to me. Oh, games are carts only but he said the unit was in great shape.

I don't think so... the closest I can think of are some goofy Japanese roms that have showed up, but I think those were all legitimate releases.

Well, I don't know too much about the cartridges, but they're kind of goofy. The connector alone would probably mean that you'd have to cannibalize an existing cartridge to do this. I'm also guessing that since the cartridges are so thin, the rom chips inside are probably surface mounted, which makes things a little harder.

I have a total soft-spot for virtual reality stuff... if a color Virtual Boy ever came out, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

One guy in Japan used to have comprehensive Virtual Boy web page until he took it down (George Palarama), fortunately I saved the game info of those unreleased, as well as cover pics:

Kemco Baseball 96

Bomberman

Bound High

Out of the Deathmount

Gunmen

Niko Chan

Polygo Block

Virtual Block

Virtual Double

Japan Pro Wrestling

I've not heard of US only games that were unreleased, perhaps someone can shed some info.

Well, I hope someone someday can release those games. It's a shame that some real nice games, like Dragon Hopper, that were finished, by all reports, never made it out the door.

Just like the 32X, another system that was killed with many great games still being made for it.

Where in NH? He still lives in the town I grew up in, Amherst.

for some reason, i think i am deeply in love with my virtual boy (like a family member, i know what some of you wer thinking). awhile back, i had a dream that was so real i swore it was true. i had a dream that they were going to rerelease the vb under a new formula that didn't hurt people's eyes when they played it, and it was going to come out in different colors, plus all the games that were released for it would be released again.

maybe i wanted jack bros. so bad i had a dream about being able to get it easily, hehehe

Here's what I was able to dig up:

Differs a bit from George's list.

I would also love to see Bound High and Dragon Hopper someday. Being first party Nintendo games means the chances of the protos turning up aren't too high though. Would be nice if Nintendo considered the idea of possibly remaking them on GBA or even their upcoming handheld, though I dunno how feasible a port of Virtual Boy games would be on the GBA.

Yeah, I pointed that out to you in another thread last month -- you never responded. :P

Could you know me? Probaly not. I lived there from 1984 till 1994. I was a student at MASH from 1990-1992 and then went to Souheagen from 1992-1994 and off to Plymouth State College in 1994.

My Mom was the long time manager and operator of Cinema Scope video in Milford, though. :D

Back on topic:

Yeah, I wish Nintendo prototypes of the games came up. Has any protos of the games made aperences anywhere?

Not that I know of. Prototypes of Virtual Bowling and Faceball 2000 for VB have popped up though. I bet Faceball looks real killer with the 3D graphics.

Hmm, in that case, you probably knew my sisters, and maybe me (Cherilee or Melissa Budrick ring a bell?). I graduated MHS in '96 So....I was there from 91-96. I probably would recognize you.

I musta missed that other thread you mentioned that in...

Sorry, I just wanted to respond here since I really don't mind. :)

All I'll say is sorry, those names don't ring anything for me.

I'm looking forward to trying the VB my friend got, though. 8-)

Yeah, there's TONS of cancelled games for the VB... not very many have been found unfortunately... I've got some pics of Faceball and Virtual Bowling protos on my site at http://projectvb.vze.com . Also there is a how-to for making your own programmable cart so you can burn ROMs to play on the actual system, and although no games have been released since the system died, I've got a few homebrewn games I made on there too.

Man, I'd love to see Faceball released... I was a huge fan of the Gameboy version, and I only recently managed to get a copy of the SNES version.

The VB version looks a little odd though... the faces are all cartoony and such... and where's the "Rover says: Have a Nice Day!" on the game over screen? I bet the 3D effect is nice in the game though.

Might as well http://www.vr32.de/ for you VB collectors. They have a list of unreleased games from their "Games" links. It's a pretty comprehensive site actually.
