View Full Version : Should I get a SNES?

I saw two of them in FuncoLand yesterday for $40. It's the first time I've seen SNESes for sale used.
Is there a shortage of used SNES? Is this a good buy, or should I wait and hope the price goes down to $20?
I took a quick look at the SNES carts - they seem really cheap. I saw some that were marked 49 cents!
Also, is there much difference from N64 to SNES?

Is that a SNES in your picture? What's the bottom half?
I would recommend getting one, but definitely not for $40. $20 is a decent price.

Yeah, the N64 sucks. Seriously though, the N64 probably has the worst 3D graphics of any system, while the SNES has some of the best 2D graphics.

Do yourself a favor, friend, and price shop online. Ebay, for example, will net you a better price including shipping.
Given that this is February prices won't be so bad as there are fewer folk buying. The Christmas Crunch has applied the hurt on these soulless bastards.

His sig line used to be "Super Famicom lives on," which made me think he thought it was a PlayStation...lol. It's a Sattelaview system; download games onto cart from futuristic satellite television during specific times! It's no longer supported, though Square and Nintendo released some enhanced versions of existing games (i.e. BS-X Zelda, a remake of the original Zelda with SNES quality graphics and effects). Overall, a neat system, but expensive.

Yes, without a doubt buy one. But not for $40.

I'm pretty sure it can do 3D better than any other pre-Dreamcast system.

Will they ever make it to $20?

I think prices for SNES consoles are headed up from here on out. Just look at the Model 2, for instance...

Add me to the throng of people who feel the SNES is a must-get system. Even today, among the powerful 3D systems, the SNES remains of my very favorite consoles. $40 does seem just a bit high for the SNES deck these days, however, so you should definitely look around. Maybe you can start stocking up on those cheap cartridges while you look for the deck.

Actually, $40 might not be that bad. I've just had a look at completed eBay auctions and they seem to go for $20-$30 without games, but factor in postage, and you wouldn't be saving a huge amount.

Actually, correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard Gamestop/Funcoland is discontinuing all 16-bit sales...so it may go down. However seeing as how you live in NJ, you should check pawnshops (likely to find one for less than $15). Or you could go to the PHILLYCLASSIC 5 (march 20th [in King of Prussia, PA]). Or you could track one down through EB Games (they are only $24.99)!!

I've been to about 10 EBs around here, and haven't seen one SNES system...
I AM planning on going to the PhillyClassic, but it will be my first time going. Will there be old systems for sale at decent prices? I can definitely wait until then...

I agree... the 3DO, Jaguar, and 32x are much better at 3-D graphics than the Nintendo 64.
<end of smartass remark>
Seriously, some of the Nintendo 64 3-D games do look like ass, but that's the developer's fault. Lack of familiarity with the complex N64 hardware coupled with too much fog and fuzzy anti-aliasing has been the downfall of many N64 3-D games. Superman 64, anyone? How about a game of Carmagaddon 64? Batman? I thought not...
However, compare the BEST of the N64 to the BEST of the PSX (the second best system for 3-D graphics IMHO, though the Saturn had a lot of hidden 3-D power) and you'll see the true 3-D power of the N64.
Both Zelda games rock, as do F-Zero, Turok 2, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, DK64, Beetle Adventure Racing, and SiN & Punishment.
Compare these games that appeared on both systems and you'll see what I mean...
Rayman 2 (much cleaner on N64, seeing distance is MUCH better)
San Francisco Rush (sucks HARD on the PSX)
Shadow Man (PSX version unplayable)
Quake II (great on both, but better on N64)
Mortak Kombat 4 (PSX is good, but N64 is much cleaner)
The World Is Not Enough (You'll see)
Gauntlet Legends (PSX version is pretty lousy)
Hydro Thunder (The N64 game is REALLY good)
Armorines (both suck, but the N64 looks better)
I'm not saying all of these games are good... I'm just saying they look better (in some cases, a HELL of a lot better) on the N64, and the PSX was a cinch to program while the N64 was a beast. Acclaim wanted to bring the Turok games to the PSX, but claimed the PSX couldn't do the games justice.
Sure... get a Super Nintendo. And yes, there is a huge differance between the SNES and the N64 in terms of hardware power and available games (the SNES has a much bigger and better-rounded selection of games.) The SNES was a 2-D system with some decent (albiet very simple) 3-D games... the N64 was a true 3-D system with a few decent 2-D games. Very much a generational differance.

Let me share my biased opinion: LOL
Yes buy a SNES, but not for $40. I think I have a spare laying around here. If you want it, let me know, I'll hook you up with a good deal. :)

Should you get a SNES? Hell if I know. What kind of games do you like? Of course the fans are going to come in and tell you to buy one, just as I'd tell you to get a Saturn if you asked me. But the fact is, the SNES isn't a machine for everyone. Hell, there's not such a thing as a machine for everyone.
The SNES has some gorgeous graphics and sound, but, IMHO, some boring games. It's a good machine if you're into RPGs or Nintendo games, but I never found too many games that really appealed to me. I prefer the faster paced quarter muncher arcade games, and I really never found many on the SNES I enjoyed.
As always, just my opinion, your mileage may vary.
I'd say $20 is a good price to check it out and see if you like it. $40? No way. SNES is not rare at all and I paid $20 for mine.

You definitely should not get an SNES. I mean, like, who likes that old crappy system anyway? There's totally no good games for it!
OF COURSE YOU SHOULD GET A *&^*^(_^&)(* SNES!!!
Do you really have to ask? :D

Actually, I probably should have rephrased my question to something like:
Should I pay $40 for a used SNES at Gamestop, or can I get one cheaper on EBAY or at PhillyClassic5, and also is the price of these things going up or down??
Actually, I know someday I will have an SNES system in my collection. The only question is how much will I pay for it...

I'll sell you a slightly faded one for $20 shipped. One controller and all the hookups.

40 bucks is bad. I got all 3 of mine for cheaper than 5 bucks total. I bet many people have them but dont play them. Just go ask some friends or something.

Nothing wrong with picking yerself up a SNES but I gotta say, $40 seems a bit steep. Does it come with any games or special accessories?
There's a chain of pawn shops where I live (Seattle area) called Pawn Express. They frequently sell SNESes for $30. I was able to talk the guy down (all right my wife talked him down, I'm too big a wuss to bargain) to $23. Not too shabby!
I've also seen several at Goodwill (although I haven't seen any for a few months) that go anywhere between $3 (seriously!) to $12. The biggest problem with Goodwill is you may or may not (most likely not) find one that includes the controllers or hookups.
So then, the moral of my story is:
Buy yourself a SNES, but not for $40. If you have the patience you can do better. Of course, if you don't feel like being patient and $40 is no big deal to you then go for it and never look back.

N64 graphics are no where NEAR as bad as a lot of the shit PSone had. Mostly jagged edged brownish colored graphics. The only downside to N64 graphics are fuzziness. That bothered me, but other than that the graphics were awesome.
Anyways, SNES, yes...get one! Don't pay 40.00 for one though just hit a few flea markets or pawn shops and luck up and find one. Gamestop should always be your last choice in buying systems.

No, Genesis does what Nintendon't.
Your welcome, I know that's the answer you wanted to hear. LOL
Seriously, though... get one, you'll like it.

Should I get a SNES?
Hmm... This reminds me of a story I once heard. It goes like this:
A graduate-level college philosophy class was having its final exam on a nice spring day in May. It's very early in the morning, and the students are sitting sleepily in their desks. The professor walks in the door, five minutes late with a stack of papers. He passes out the tests, gives the instructions, and the students open the test booklets to their amazement: There is only one question, "Why?". Being used to the eccentric instructor, the students have little reason to doubt the credibility of the circumstances that have been placed before them. So, they toil. There are many blank pages to fill up, and every student works feverishly up until the final moment with the exception of one, who writes a few words and leaves, apparently fed up with the bull shit that's been placed on his desk.
Fast forward two weeks: Grades have been handed out, and the results are astonishing. Every student flunked except one, the student who walked out early. As it turns out, his response was this:
"What happens if we don't?"
And that got him the 'A'.
Now, how does this apply to your situation? Ask yourself, "What happens if I don't--if I don't go out and buy that Super Nintendo?" Pondering this, the answer is clear: You will be robbing yourself of true happiness and Heaven on Earth. You will be precluding the single opportunity that you have to make your life worthwhile. Deprived of a reason to live, you will become a slave to all which is detrimental in this world as your life quickly spirals out of your reach and into the unfathomable abyss. You will go bald, you will grow profuse back hair, your genitals will rot and fall of, and your eyeballs will be gauged out by the person whom you love most.
Buy the SNES, Schenley.

Count me in as another guy urging you to go for it. However, $40 for just an SNES is a little much... I'm sure that if you paid that much on ebay you'd probably get a nice little bundle of games with it.

$40 is waay too much for a used SNES. Go to ebay and look around, eventualy you will be able to pick up a console w/ a few games for $20-$30
