I'm talking about all the numerous "Museums" and "Treasures" and "Classics" etc...
There are tons of these things for every system since the SNES and Genesis days.
How many different groups are there?
And how many of each are there?
And if one were to want the best mix for play on a single system, which would they get? (Say the Game Boy)

out of my head
Dreamcast:
Namco Museum Vol. 1
Midway Arcade Greatest Hits 1
Midway Arcade Greatest Hits 2
Sega Smash Pack Vol. 1
SNES:
Midway Arcade Hits (or something like that)
then you of course have Atari Anniversary thingy and Intellivision Lives
then all those GB compilations
all Sega Ages/Classics
Phosphor Dot Fossils

I'm not going to call it definitive, as it leaves out a few volumes of Capcom Generations, but I think I've got a pretty good list of retro-compilations for the PS1 here (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/), most with screen shots and cover art.
Enjoy! ;)

The entire Namco Museum series and Konami Arcade Classics for the PS1. Oh, and the Arcade Party Pack, also for the PS1. Those are the greatest ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Thanks P.D.F. That's a nice set of reviews and info! Been looking for something like that for awhile (didn't know it was just a couple degrees of seperation away...).Yes, I agree! Awesome job! I want to start collecting the titles that are based on classic arcade games as opposed to the ones that recreate them. (That's what MAME is for! :P ) I love Frogger2 and Pacman's World.
Anyway, add this to the GB list. (I just bought it)
Joust/Defender (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3571&item=3078681383&ssPageName=STRK:MEBWN:IT). I gotta think that Defender is going to be tough on the GB...
Another collection I just started is Joust on all platforms. So far, I have Joust for 2600, NES, MAME (of course), and for my Palm Tungsten T.

So how much did you wind up paying for that PS1 Irem Classics?
I got a copy a couple of years ago and I still like it (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/irem/). I was prepared to wage an epic battle to win it on eBay, and wound up getting it for $20 shipped! LOL

What, no one's mentioned Konami's various deluxe packs? For the most part these are all import only in the U.S., with one exception:
Gradius Deluxe Pack (Gradius/Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou) - PSX/Saturn
Gradius III and IV (Gradius III/Gradius IV) - PS2 (the lone exception)
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus (Salamander/Life Force/Salamander 2) - PSX/Saturn
Gokujyo Parodius-Da! Deluxe Pack (Parodius Da!/Gokujou Parodius) - PSX/Saturn
Detana Twinbee Yahho-! Deluxe Pack (Detana!! TwinBee/TwinBee Yahho-!) - PSX/Saturn
For that matter, what about The Raiden Project (Raiden/Raiden II) - PSX and Bubble Bobble Also Featuring Rainbow Islands (Bubble Bobble/Rainbow islands/Rainbow Islands Enhanced) - PSX/Saturn?

Taito should come out with one with all the Bubble Bobble titles, Zoo Keeper and Flippul...

Taito should come out with one with all the Bubble Bobble titles, Zoo Keeper and Flippul...Yeah. At least the BB's. I have never played some of them. And some nice Updated graphics and sound "In the style of the "Arrangement" arcade remakes would be killer. I can get by with my PSX version as it's the arcade version, but I want more.
They should make one with muiltiple level layouts. One for each console port that was released. i.e. the NES, Genesis and SMS had different layouts. Some had more levels, some less, etc. And maybe a master version with one of each level ever made for the game including any exclusives.
As long as there are cheat codes to at least add lives and continues and level skipping. (My favorite feature of the PSX version. The only way I'll ever beat the game.)

Heh, sorry. I was just listing the ones I own... forgot all about the Gold Packs there. Definitely add those, though.
