im just curious as to what everybodys opinion is on what the hardest game is.i can think of a few that are just utterly impossible to beat such as silver surfer for nes , smash tv for nes etc i remember alot of really hard nes games that make oyou wonder whether or not they were even play tested to see if anybody could beat the game like they used a random level genrator or something

We'll good hard or bad hard? Two Different hards there. A good hard gives you all the tools and ups the difficulty bad hard is one that has horrible control/camera angles ai.

Good hard Chakan was impossible

Bad hard, Ecco, Defender of the future. "Let's not tell you anything about the goals in a particular level."

Double Dragon for the 2600. Many say it is impossible, but there is a guy on Atari Age that has beaten it. No one else can beat it.

the real Super Mario Bros. 2. Not the Doki Doki Panic ripoff, the original Japanese version. DEAR GOD that is hard. If you have Super Mario All-Stars, give it a real run. And let me know how long until you started crying in the corner.

phantasy star 2 isnt really its just most modern rpgs dont force you to walk around for hours leveling up.... the dungeons in ps 2 arnt too hard either once you get the item that lets you save anywhere

Battletoads is my Nemesis!
I only won this game when I rented a (lime-green!?) pirate cart with a built-in cheat for infinite lives. And even cheating that game was hard as hell.

And your prize for winnig the game is a lame ending...

Good hard - DDRMax2, Contra: Shattered Soldier, Amplitude/Frequency, Ikaruga, could go on and on.

Bad hard - Dragon's Lair (NES).. can't really think of any more. Usually if it's that bad, I don't want to play it, much less remember it.

Starforce for NES is a bitch. I never really liked the game, but damned if I didn't try for years to beat it. I got to level 16 or 21 or something out of 24 levels ONCE w/o cheats (ok, NES Advantage Slo-mo). God, when game genie first came out, it was the first game I went after. It has an ending, but I've never found if the Japanese one has an ending (my japanese pirate doesn't have one). Apparently (I openned the rom in a hex viewer), the code is COMPLETELY different, and I can not get any game genie codes to work on it. I pulled every trick I could find online for GG code substitution, and no dice.

Good/EVIL hard: Holy Diver for famicom is one of the best games ever for the system, but holy friggin hell is it hard.....I just can't see someone beating that without cheats. That game is harder than hell WITH SAVE STATES!

Good Hard!: Phantasy Star 2 is really just a lot of leveling up....not too hard tho. Should take the average gamer about 2 weeks to beat if you play every day.

Good/Bad hard: Chakan...I actually got to the last boss once...you still get an ending if I remember correctly. I don't think you have to beat him. Don't wanna spoil why...(See spoiler below) The thing is, you only get one shot at him....no moreinfintie lives bullpucky. THAT SUCKS! Not impossible tho (takes mega practice...so frustrating). Took me about 2 or three (LONG) days to get to the end. Using an emu I got to the last boss and beat him, and I think the ending was only very slightly different if not different at all...

SPOILER ALERT

Don't read this if you dont wanna know what happens at the end of Chakan:

Ok, he defeats death and all the evil in the world, but death tells him that he hasn't won until all the evil in the universe is destroyed (death tells him to look to the heavens at all the stars...lotsa evil around those planets too!). Our buddy Chakan has quite a ways to go!

Good hard/impossible - Alundra for PSX

Bad hard - Aqua Aqua for the PS2. I think its a great concept but the crappy FIXED camera sucked so hard I kept missing my targets 95% of the time.

I can't think of good hard since if I enjoy it, it's not that hard, but bad hard, all old timers know this game:

Tiger Heli and its prequal (forgo the name)

Try to beat this with one credit, where bullets move at least twice as fast as your heli.

Cannon Fodder on the Jaguar. Holy crap was that game ever frustrating.

Oh, and I'm positive this subject has been brought up before... I'm too lazy to find the more recent thread though.

I'm not sure about Good Hard, 'cause there are a lot of games that are hard but good (most recently for me: Tron 2.0 in Hard Mode)...

..but for Bad Hard:

Super Hunchback for the original GB. I don't *think* the game is impossible, but it just as well might be.

Bad Hard:SOCOM: U. S Navy Seals

Balloon Fight

Ghouls & Ghosts for the SuperGrafx. Ugh. I really can't do it.

Bad hard: any game where precision jumping is required. Just stupid stuff really, that tests if you can line a character up with the VERY EDGE of the cliff to just make it to the VERY EDGE of the next cliff. Just bad.

Man it's gotta be Dragon's Lair. A year or so ago I rented the DVD version of it and couldn't make it past the first stage. Then I downloaded the walk-thru and still couldn't make it past the first screen or two. Talk about frustrating!

good hard- defender, in the arcades i avoided this title as a quarter stealer but its a really addictive game on a console

bad hard- any of the three super star wars games for SNES, i dont know what the hell they were thinking here! did anybody actually play test these games, they're just not fair. its a pity too since lots of us loved the license but didnt need the stress.

BAD HARD: Original Metroid. Every time you die you have to start over at 30 energy??? Ugh!

Huh, I never had much of a problem with them. In fact, I finished each one within a day of getting it. Seriously. The only part of any of them that I recall giving me a problem was the final stage of Super RotJ... trying to fly out of the second Death Star. You have to avoid obstructions and stay ahead of the fireball that's right on your ass. It's not easy, but I still managed to finish the game. I've done it several times since then, too.

I'm only going to list the bad hard: Assault Suit Leynos 2. This game makes Target Earth (aka ASL1) look like a fucking bike ride. I can at least get to stage 5 in ASL1; in ASL2 I made it to the second stage - ONCE.

I know i'll never beat these games:

South Park (N64)
Goffy's Histerical History Tour (Genesis)
Chaken (Genesis)
Road Runner Death Valley Rally (SNES)

And i doubt i'll ever beat Super Magnetic Neo (Dreamcast)
