- Frog Pond (2600) will be released by Cassidy Nolan who also released Polo (2600).

- Climber 5 (2600) By: Dennis Debro, Debuting at PC5!

Is it still called Philly Classic, or are they talking this year about turning into something dumb, like "Phunky Phun" or "Groovy Game Expo" or something that smacks of mediocre 90s-ness like "Game Jam," a name that almost wants to make me say:

DON'T COPY THAT FLOPPY!

:) No, j/k we'll see how March is with scheduling for me...might be a wedding going on that weekend I have to check.

Okay, I can't make any guarantees set in stone. But since I am a resident Pennsylvanian, and Philly's about a 2-3 hour drive from my house... there is a fair chance of me attending. We'll see if school, family, or any other interventions will prevent me from showing up, but if the skies are clear, then I'm good to go! :D

I live about 20-25 minutes from the Valley Forge Convention Center, and I've been to the past two PhillyClassics (I wasn't even aware of the event until the 3rd one came around due to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer); needless to say I'll be there, and looking forward to it.

BTW, the convention center is actually located in King of Prussia, not Philadelphia. I live right outside of Philly, so the event is actually about 20 minutes or so outside of Philly.

I am also not very far away but I do not know if I will make the trip. Is there a good variety of stuff from vendors? Also are the prices reasonable? I don't want to make the trip only to see a bunch of Mario/Duck Hunts for $20 LOL Also, recent drama has kinda put me on the fence...still plenty of time to decide.

I'm still pretty ambivalent about this year's show, I have to admit. Last year just didn't seem as fun for some reason, and with the inane stuff that went on a few months ago I'm a little off-put about attending. On the other hand, it is a good chance to play some games, see folks I don't see elsewhere, and discover cool stuff I never saw before, so maybe I'll go again after all. And I'd hate to break my streak.

Hey there,
Just because I am a stickler for correctness, just wanted to let you know that Cassidy Nolen did not "write" Polo or Frog Pond, the games were written by Atari programmers back in the day. Just didn't want anyone to think he was claiming he'd written the games. You can get more complete info about the game release at www.atarionline.com.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I, as well as the other organizers of ECGX (http://www.ecgx.com) will be at PhillyClassic.

If you would like to talk about ECGX with us, or just chit-chat, be sure to drop by our tables.

I'll be the 6'7" guy walking the show floor on Saturday. I'll also be the largest man you'll ever see playing DDR and playing it somewhat well. 8*)

I'll be at Philly! It's only a few days away and all I can say is YEEEE HAW! I need a trip back to the 80's to recharge the old battery.

Castle Crisis for Atari 5200 (why does this system get no respect?) is also debuting there -- an INCREDIBLE version of Warlords!

I plan on picking up Climber 5 too.

Good thing you asked that! I believe we are in an even bigger room before! Also, the number of arcade machines has increased significantly (about 100)

There are plenty of games to go around, but get there early on saturday for the really sweet deals!

Tholly, also check my website in my sig at the bottom for philly classic 4 pics, that will give you a better idea of what is going to blow you away X_x

opcode
03-15-2004, 10:36 AM
Hi!

Well, in case you haven't seen the PC5 website yet, Opcode will be unveiling its second ColecoVision game at PC5, Sky Jaguar. You can look for it at AtariAge booth. There will also be a few copies of Space Invaders Collection available. Both games come with cart, manual and box.

In addition to the new game, AtariAge and Opcode will be sponsoring a nice tournament of Konami's Ping-Pong (ColecoVision version) at PhillyClassic5. That will be a good chance to playtest this game which is planned to release in the next few months.
The tournament will use a specially modified version of Ping-Pong to allow quicker matches. Now each "game" will be just 7 points, instead the original 21 points. The first player to win two "games" wins the match. However a player must wins by at least a two-point lead.

As a side note, the CV version of Magical Tree has been officially canned. After some debate with Jess Ragan about it, we concluded MT wasn't as good as other planned titles, so I have replaced it with Yie Ar Kung-Fu (which will be presented in playable form at PC5). However it must be pointed out the planned CV version is based on the MSX version, which was released "before" the famous arcade game. In this version, you're Lee The Kung-Fu Master and must face the five Chop Suey Gang's martial arts experts. The game also includes a nice bonus stage where you can test your reflexes. Just as an interesting tidbit, YAKF was the very first title Konami released for the Famicom in Japan, and the Famicom version was also ported from the MSX version, with subtle enhancements, the biggest being a completely revamped 4th character, the female fighter Lang. In the MSX version, Lang was designed poorly, so the good news is I used the Famicom version of Lang instead, which has far better graphics and bear a close resemblance to the arcade character "Star" (remaining fighters look exactly the same on both versions). :)

The funniest part of the show was seeing that crazy Japanese drum game - hahaha that thing was craaaazee.

It was interesting to see some of the old Atari stuff, but I was never a big Atari fan. I had a VIC 20 at the time, and the graphics on that were phenomenally better than anything the Atari could put out.

Too bad there wasn't any way to spot the other DP peeps.

Yes, that Drum Master game was excellent! Do you have the floor map, I wanted to thank that guy for bringing all the "special peripheral" games, he was cool and trying his best to be accomadating to the crowd requests, and that guy was tearing up the BeatMania 2DX(?) rocking the dual turntables on HI speed......the only one I wasn't digging was the konami one where theres like 5 sensors (kinda like samba de amigo) where you have to wave your hands and legs, players looked like they were having a seizure! LOL

I saw a few DP members, mainly those I've seen before at NAVA

I enjoyed the PC5 very much. I did hear that it wasn't as good as previous shows though. I was shocked b/c i really did have a grand time. I met a few DP members and felt it was easy to see who a lot of them were just for the fact that they were wearing the famed DP shirts as I was. I was also happy that a lot of people were interested in the ECGX. It is going to be a great show as well!

we used wristbands this year so it was very easy to track attendees.

Our numbers: 2,500+ [over two days]

That makes us the largest video game convention of our kind in the United States and probably North America

Unfortunately it wasn't an isolated case. When you have such a big event and 90% of them are the general public that stuff is just going to happen and there is no way around it. I'm glad to hear that they caught and arrested at least one the guys who was doing this.

I also had a few items turn up missing and Curt Vendel even told me he caught some guy trying to steal stuff out of his museum !!! The days of being able to trust everyone at the show are over. Next year if I set up to sell I'll just bring more of the common non-collectable items.

Other than that is was a great show. Lots of people and some great classic arcade machines on hand.

I have to admit, I was the one who caught the guy. Just ask K3V. (Which by the way, K3V is one of the coolest guys I met at the show!) Anyways. I had noticed I was missing a loose dragon warrior 3 and 4 for nes. Quite the higher end carts. So, I noticed they were gone and reported it to Dave. I noticed someone acting suspiciously hanging around tables... (you know what to look for after working retail for several years) They left my table, and I noticed that my Colecovision Rocky cart had been missing.

I was 99% sure of who it was, and reported it to Mark, he called over the security guard. All three of us then proceeded to watch him steal another cart from another vendor. We emptied his bag, and sure enough all my stuff was there, and all the other vendor's stuff.

Police were called, suspect was interrogated, no charges were pressed.

Moral of the story. Everyone is not honest. and its not worth having the police called on you for some damn video games......
