Ah, I finally have something worth posting in this forum. The joys of owning a Neo-Geo.

Does anyone know if Psikyo used to be known as Video System? Because Aero Fighters 2 (Sonic Wings 2 in Japan) reminds me a LOT of Gunbird. I love every aspect of the game, from the John Woo amount of bullets to Spanky the Dolphin! Except for the dirty trick they pull at Level 10....coasting along on unlimited continues, but Level 10 makes you continue at the start of the level! ACK!

I'm so gald you posted this!!! I swear I was about to post this myself!

I asked this a while ago over at shmups.com and never got a definitive answer. Personally, I think they either were a break off group, or really ripped them off hard.

Here's my case(I'm going by Sonic Wings Special for Saturn which is kind of a re-mix of all three games, very awesome, btw):

"Wacky" characters similar to Gunbird series
Level Design (back ground and what not) similar to Strikers 1945 series
Power Up icons similar to Stirkers (except they rotate vertically instead of horizontally)
The font used for scoring is the same as in Psikyo games
Charge up shots (on some characters) like Psikyo uses
Characters level down like in some Psikyo games
Bullet patterns similar
Continuing starts you at beginning of level starting at level 7 (in SWS)
Music sounds Psikyo-esque
Boss battles feel similar (hard to describe, you just have to play to see)
Kind of short levels with longer boss battles (like Psikyo)
Areo Fighters 2 & 3 came out on Neo-Geo as did Strikers 1945 Plus (and there aren't too many people developing for the Neo)

Actually I had more, but you get the drift. Personally I think they were a break away group like Treasure or Cave. I still haven't found anything to back that up, but that's my theory. Kind of sad Psikyo is no more. I really liked their stuff and it was finally getting released in the States. :(

I showed your comparison list to my SHMUP-lovin' pals at The Third Moon (pub33.ezboard.com/bthethirdmoon) and they've pretty much reached the same conclusion. Video System went bankrupt at one point, and Psikyo was probably a product of that.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I love Psikyo, and I've been trying to figure this one out for a while.

I had this for my Neo-geo at one time....but traded it for Andro-Dunos....I was happy with the trade.

Last Resort
Viewpoint
Zed Blade

The only Neo shooter I have at this time is Aero Fighters 2, actually (I had Ghost Pilots, but I traded it off)

I have a Neo CDZ, so it's a lot harder to find games (in proportion to a Neo AES). I really want Viewpoint, Pulstar, and Twinkle Star Sprites though.

Pulstar is mad wicked amazing.

On the subject of Psikyo, I've heard that their programmers included some former Compile staff members. Can anyone back this up?

That's a new one on me, but that's a question I'd really like to know the answer to.

I know Cave is former Toaplan guys, but I've never heard anything about Psyko.
