View Full Version : Who got screwed?

People like to say that fans of the Dreamcast were betrayed by Sega in a big way when they dumped the system like a hot potato and became a third party game developer. However, it's worth pointing out that owners of Sega's previous system, were treated just as badly, having been denied dozens of great games which were released in Japan and Europe.
So I pose to you this question... who got screwed the worst, Saturn owners or Dreamcast owners? Before you answer, consider the following:
* The Dreamcast was left unsupported by Sega three short years after it was released... but so was the Saturn.
* American Dreamcast owners were cheated out of a sequel to Shenmue II... but Saturn owners never even got to experience the first Shenmue, which was originally slated as a Saturn release.
* The Saturn never got a translation of Virtua Fighter 3... but the Dreamcast got a lackluster conversion of the game which nobody liked.
*Saturn owners received three different Panzer Dragoon games, while Dreamcast owners never got any at all.
* The Dreamcast is still actively supported by hobbyist programmers... while Saturn homebrew development is still stuck in the ice ages.
* American Saturn owners were cheated out of dozens of great Japanese games... while the Dreamcast wasn't especially well supported in Japan, only having a handful of worthwhile Japanese exclusives.
With all this in mind, which system do YOU think got the bigger shaft?

Dreamcast Owners.
The Dreamcast was an awesome machine, very powerfull (I'll say as good as the PS2). And it wasn't hard to program for.
There should still be games being made for it the same as the PS2 and they would sell just as well.
Sega definitely screwed us all .
But I am glad they did what they had to do to stay in business and continue making great games. :-P

The Saturn. I just think this because of all the imports. Definitely could have helped the system out.

The Saturn. I actually don't have much evidence, but this is just how I feel. They put in the effort to put DreamCast online, and keep it online.

Funny how the Panzer Dragoon Saga team was left alone during the tail end of development, even though the system was clearly dying. Certainly the community at large was cheated...I need to get that game :(

I thought all the Dreamcast servers were gone now.
PSO went down a while back.

Forget the fact the Dreamcast missed out on Shenmue 2, the real kick in the pants is that Sega only released one third of Shining force 3 over here! That is the real rip off. At least Shenmue 2 was still released stateside elsewhere. I can't read Japanese, and I really wanted to enjoy the rest of that story. It would be nice if Sega made a Shining collection that included the whole thing and maybe even some of the other shining games (not necessarily forces but maybe shining wisdom or holy ark).
Speaking of which, are they going to bring out any new shining games? It's a great franchise.

They are, but years later - and it WAS a good effort. Unless you consider the XBand a success, you could say that Sega's online gaming with the Dreamcast was the first to take itself seriously, and obviously the first to feature console games with online features.
I'll say the Saturn. It was dead before it even really got going, and it's clear from the import scene that it had a lot more going for it than we were led to believe in the US. At least Dreamcast owners got most of the good titles. There are very few DC imports that I'd call killer apps.

Nights was a good game, however when I first started playing it I was really angry. The commercials advertised that this game let you fly free anywhere you want. So I start playing and say, "I'm going to fly over there," and then NOPE, I'm on !@#$ - ing rails!? Good game, falsely advertised. However Nights definately could use a follow up.
Here's a brief list of Sega games I want sequals on.
Nights
Burning Rangers
Shining Force
Streets of Rage
Eternal Champions
Flicky.
ok Maybe not flicky, but the rest could all be truly spectacular on the new systems with a couple of tweaks.

US Saturn. From the suprize system launch to the stupid decisions regarding RAM and memory carts Sega really gave US Saturn fans the old Joan Collins Special.

Both systems suffered from stupid management decisions, but the Saturn suffered mostly.
Saturn was dumped because of.: a) stupid advertising; b)wonderful japanese games not translated; c) bad devkits; d) I could go on forever about these things...
DC.: was dumped because of.: a) Sony's hype for the PS2; b) Dumb people who believed this hype; c) DC's lack of a DVD drive and d) Sega's lack of money.

Saturn. The Dreamcast was a much more fully realized system. Although the number of DC import killer apps increases if you are a shooter fan. The fact that I own more imports than domestics for my Saturn bespeaks massive shaftage.

Joan Collins Special? Is that in any way related to this "Cleveland Steamer" nonsense?

I've gotta go with Dreamcast here. I was let down alot more with it. I let down my Sega Saturn myself.
I remember supporting the Saturn and I remember when they announced it's death. At that point Wal-Mart decided to drop all Saturn merchandise to outrageous low prices, but me being an idiot decided to just go ahead and buy a Playstation.
Don't get me wrong, I had much fun on PLaystation but I could have had Panzer Dragoon Saga, Saturn Bomberman, Shining Force, etc..., for about $20 a tite, but I was dumb. So really "I" let the Saturn down, not vice versa, though it sucked it went away without more support.
The Dreamcast on the other hand promised me roses and gave me thorns. My most anticipated game was Half-Life, Ireally wanted this game. It was cancelled. I was really looking forward to the next ToeJam and Earl on Dreamcast. It was canceled. I could go on with how many games I wanted on Dreamcast that were canceled but we will be here all day.
Phantasy Star Online was good for a while but showed utter lack of dedication from the part of Sega. They let hackers run rampant on the damn trhing, and it got ruined, what a joke. Same goes for almost every one of their other online games. Good for a week, then trash cause of hackers.
Dreamcast never had any good final release titles either. What was there? Like, OOga Booga? LOL.
Dreamcast let me down a WHOLE WHOLE lot more than Saturn, and the way I see it, it's just a matter of time before the Dreamcast is looked back on as Sega's worst console. Emulation is the only thing keeping it afloat, imo.
"btw, I don't count 32x as a console, so :P"

Saturn, by far and away. I have more domestic Dreamcast releases (eight) than domestic saturn games (one). I have more import Saturn games (33) than import Dreamcast games (one).

Streets of Rage was fun but there really wasn't anything special about it. I'm sure that a remake would be more of the same on the PS2. In fact, change the characters and names and the new TMNT game could easily be a new Streets of Rage game.
