Hey folks

Who is truly interested in S-Video for their Turbo/PCE system? I'll be rolling out a Turbo Duo, a SuperGrafx, and a PC Engine Duo in the next day or two that have built in S-Video and also the region mod (to play Jp and US HuCards on one machine without an adapter).

The question is who would be interested in getting this (these) mod(s). I ask since these are systems that VERY FEW people have done the video mod on and I'm trying to gauge how much effort I should be putting into doing this.

Thoughts?

Personally, i'd very interested in both mods for my duo :eek 2: . S-vid is superior and the region mod would open up a huge selection of games for me. I prefer internal mods over converter carts and such.

I would be interested in 1 thing.

You actually telling me where I can get 8PDT switches so I can do the region mod myself. Google has failed me, and no luck so far with online sources either. I don't understand the reluctance to share the info about something so benign and obscure....

Best of luck selling the services. I think it's important that you offer it. However, I'm more interested in doing both of these things myself. If you are not willing to share the info when it is requested, that is your business, and best of luck with it.

Thanks so much.

Did you ask me this before? I think you did, right?
I remember mentioning that it was something from a dead process (a surplus product) and available from a company in Nebraska. Yeah, I just went back and checked that thread for my response. I just found it again using Google (seventh hit on the search for "8PDT"), and here it is:
http://www.surplussales.com/Switches/SWPushBmain.html

Just search through the push button switches for the specific switch. I did answer your question in the previous thread on the subject, but I just didn't list the specific vendor since I couldn't remember it. Sorry for that. So please don't accuse me of not being willing to share info. Most people in fact wouldn't tell you where to get the switch. I know because I asked quite a few people and they all just ignored me, so I found it myself.
Further data on doing the mod is at the Turbo-List including a source for the slide version of the switch which some people think is easier to install since it is significantly smaller.

As far as info on doing the S-Video mod, this is readily available info too, but this is not for the faint of heart. You can use either a Sony CXA1645 or CXA2075 chip or an AD725 from Analog Devices. The datasheets for these is readily availlable on the web from many places. But be prepared to first get the chips (the AD725 is available chip only, but the Sony ones you'll have to dig out of an early PSX, late Genesis, or a Saturn) and then to acquire about 15 different types of components and chips and then put them together without going blind. The process to make the S-Video circuit takes about 2-4 hours depending on what you have available and your ability to solder in small spaces. Then tack on the case modification and mounting the S-Video and AV mounts. Fun fun.

So...... do you have some sort of pricing for this O_O ?

D-Lite
02-19-2004, 08:38 PM
Yep, approx pricing:

S-Video = $60 + return ship
Region = $50 + return ship
Both with RCA video and stereo mounts too = $100 + ship!

I think it's pretty fair since it's about 4 hours of work and more than 15 different types of parts involved. To put it in perspective, if you were to buy a JROK converter for your S-Video, that costs $80 by itself and it doesn't even work properly with Turbo/PCE stuff. Too dark, I've tried it.

To continue to provide resources for the 8PDT switch:

Slide Switch:
http://www.seniorindustries.com/HTML/82MS2RX.html
(first hit on Google searching "8PDT slide switch")

Another Push Button:
http://www.e-switch.com/pdf/TALTSeries.pdf

The slide switch is probably the easiest to install due to it's smaller size (push button type switches are at least 3 inches long!!)

Thank You for your help with the info.

You also have my apologies, as I've obviously misconstrued your intentions in earlier posts. I appreciate you sharing your information.

D-Lite is good about this kind of stuff, unlike a couple of other people at the n-g.com forums who do this and -won't- tell you where to get the switch to do it yourself. I did find the slide-switch site through the turbo list and would actually prefer it that way but good luck trying to figure out how to order from them...

Can you make one for the pcengine?

Some images.
First is the video circuit (homemade on left, middle is the JROK 3.0, 8PDT switch on right). Second is all the mods on the back of a US Turbo Duo.

The mods could be done on a PC Engine, but the S-video circuit probably won't fit in the box. Could be done externally....

Hey guys

I will eventually post some Duo's for sale and also offer the service for any of the mods for your existing systems. I want to FULLY test out the systems first, but all signs are good. At the moment, I have the Duo pictured above, a PC Engine Duo (with a bit of sluggish responding CD drive), and a SuperGrafx all done with all the mods. All will be available. I'll also eventually offer just the video circuit so you can install it yourself.

But for now, just looking for feedback and whatnot, but definitely drop me a line if you're interested.

Yeah, and that way people can do what they want as far as placement of ports and whatnot. Hopefully I'll get a FAQ together for the circuit as well.

This is kind of a dumb question but is the region MOD for Hu cards? or Just import CD's?
I only have US CD' games and my Import Hu cards I use a pin converter that I end up using with my TG-16 because the Duo forces you to bend the pin adapter back and I don't want to wreck it. So if this MOD would allow me to play my import Hu cards without dragging out my TG-16 that would be great! 8-)

Yeah, it's for HuCards, man. There aren't any region lock-outs on CDs. That means that you can play your USA CDs on your Japanese machine, and that you can play your Japanese CDs on your USA machine. Hope this helps you out.

D-Lite

Yep, LB is correct. Specifically, a "region" switch mod allows you to play both US and JP HuCards on the same HuCard slot. A region modded Duo can play all games including the Arcade CDs if you have an Arcade Card Duo, except for the 5 SuperGrafx games.
