I remember when Super nintendo and genesis came out and the systems were like $200 new and a lot of the games were $49.99-59.99. And some genesis games were even 60-90 dollars. This kid at my school thinks that all those systems didnt cost that much when they first came out and he thinks the games were 30 bucks new and none were more than 50. I remember some used games in places like funcoland being 50 bucks or so back when these systems came out. I remember always seeing them at toys R us too. Most of you guys are older and will remember better so back me up.

Of course. And I don't remember so many crazy insane discounts to 20 to 9.99 bucks a few months later. Kids have it so easy these days with Greatest Hits repressings and stock glut.

Yep, I remember shelling out 79.99 for Zero Tolerance.
The only game I remember being more than that was Virtua Racing. X-Perts was probably as much too.

Is it just me or does this just apply to playstation (and now xbox) on their deep discounts of games after a length of time. I don't think nintendo or sega really discounted their games much until the systems were considered obsolete, then they were discounted more (only exception being maybe sports dated games). That's the way it seemed to be for me in Green Bay area at least.

Very true. Hell at my Wal-Mart they still have THPS3 and PowerPuff girls for N64 at $40. I remember a few years back when it took 3-4 years after the N64 released to have the SNES stuff drop in price.

I think that part of that is that the cartridge-based games costed the stores more, and they were more reluctant to lower the prices. And, on topic, although I was VERY young, I can recall once seeing Final Fantasy III (Or as I like to call it, FFVI), for $79.99. And DKC2 and YI for $59.99 new.

That may be true, but it seems like sony has a fetish for overproducing all the titles they make, then slapping the old "greatest hits" title on it to get some more sales off of it. Credit to Sony though, they do know how to market their product.

With the exception of FF2 (the most expensive game I ever got at $70), I have NEVER paid more then $50 for a game. Never.
And I got my SNES brand new for $180 also, so even there I saved money.
Where did you guys shop, anyway? :eek 2:

A few months after the release of the SNES in late 1991, I received one for Christmas along with F-Zero, Final Fantasy II, Final Fight, Super Mario World, Super Bases Loaded, and SimCity. I can remember looking at the price tags (which my parents had forgotten to remove) on those games, and all of them read $69.99... and these were Wal-Mart prices! The Super NES itself was $199.99 with Super Mario World. So, in one single Christmas, my parents bought nearly $600 worth of SNES stuff for me. Needless to say, I was a happy 12-year-old that year. :D
It's amazing how expensive those 16 bit games were back when they were the hot new thing in the early 90's. I'd certainly never spend $70 on a game today... especially with the prices lowering mere weeks after a game's release.

What do you mean do I remember when SNES games went for $59.99? They still do. I was in a store called "power gamer" today and they had a copy of Final Fantasy 2 for $59.99. I said to the employee there you have got to be kidding me. He said "that it is a highly sought after and rare game." I checked on ebay today and you can get it for a lot less than $60 for just the cartridge.

When Super Mario 3 came out in early 1990, it had a retail price of $99 all across the city here. Granted that was in Canadian dollars, but at the time, that was equal to over $80 US.

I remember going to my local mall and stopping by the Macy's store back in 1990. They were still carrying personal electronics and game consoles back then. Nowadays, I don't think they carry items like that since it's been over 7 years since I've actually browsed around a Macy's store.
Ah yes....
I saved up $100.00 from my allowance and my paper route money* so I could buy a new game which I heard was coming out: "Strider".
I wanted to be the first one on my block to have the very first (or so they claim) "8-Meg" game, which at the time, allowed stores to jack up the price big time whenever a 'big' game (in terms of memory size) would be released.
I saw the box in the display case; In cool letters with that blonde dude 'climbing' through the art window border. "Strider" had finally arrived for me. Even though the price tag was $74.99, I just had to have it. I told my dad that I wanted the game and he just said "Well, it's your money. Buy whatever you want with it.".
Paying the cashier with a wrinkled set of 10's & 5's, I gave her $85 to cover the cost of the game + tax.
The cashier then gave me my change, placed the game in a paper Macy's bag and my dad and I were finally off.
The entire distance back to the car, I was smiling like a Cheshire Cat. :D
Why? Because I finally had Strider. :)

I remember for my 11th birthday, I was choosing between Dragon Warrior 4 and Final Fantasy II... it was decided that I would get Final Fantasy II because it was $5 cheaper... I believe Final Fantasy II was $65 CDN at the time.

I remember paying like $50 for Streets of Rage 2
and this was well over a year after its release.
I also remember buying the "Classics" edition of the first "Streets of Rage" with its "budget" price of $29.99.
Yeah $20 for budget games is nice.

Totally worth it.
It's funny, looking at some of the games' old prices. Nowadays, I try not to pay more than $30 for a game. Cheapassgamer has really ruined me.

I remember reading about the high prices but I don't remember actually PAYING that. Game Players and maybe VG&CE both had the "retail price" of a game and most of the time that amount was a good $5 to $10 higher than what local stores were selling them. I don't think out of the games I bought new locally I paid more than $55 (though I wanna say I paid maybe $60 for Ghouls n' Ghosts but I'm not sure). Used stuff I bought through BRE Software before a game store came to town.
The only games I really remember seeing go for those prices were the Final Fantasy games for SNES, Super Tecmo Bowl III Final Edition, Phantasy Star IV and Virtua Racing.

In 1992, I distinctly remember paying $75 at Toys R Us for Romance of the Three Kingdoms II for the Genesis. I didn't even get it still sealed in the package either. The copy I got was the last one they had and the one they had cut up to make their display.
A couple of years later I bought Street Fighter II Turbo for the SNES on release day at a K-Mart for $85.
I still remember the initial price on Phantasy Star IV for the Genesis at Babbages, $129.95. That was the same sticker price that had been on my Genesis when I initially bought it. (That was one I didn't buy at launch. I waited until I found it in a used game bin at a video store for $20.)
I think I lucked out on Final Fantasy III for the SNES. IIRC, I think it was $64.99 when I bought it as a gift for a friend.
My Sega CD wasn't even a system on its own. It was only an ADD ON. And it was $229.99. It had just been discounted from $299.95. To be fair, the Sega CD initially had one of the best pack in deals of all time to soften the blow to the wallet.
Toward the end of the 16 bit systems' runs, most games were around $60. And it certainly wasn't unusual for the games to be $69.95 or so. Budget titles were typically $29.99, and few games ever actually ended up in that status.
In the final analysis, game pricing is much better now. $50 is about the most you're going to pay for a brand new X-Box, GCN, or PS2 game. There are even a decent number of brand new releases that are as low as $20. Then there is the higher willingness to discount titles after a time and the trend of Greatest Hits titles.
On the other hand, system prices are worse. People will say that inflation makes them roughly the same price as their early 90s counterparts, but, while inflation has increased, average wages (in the U.S., at least) have not kept up. Plus, considering all the current consoles are at the tail end of their life cycles, the should be much cheaper. (Except for the GCN, which is priced about where it should be)

Well the funny part is that I got these games again, about 2 weeks ago on ebay both BRAND NEW + SEALED still, for $6.50 a piece. @_@

I don't have to remember; There's a Zellers department store here in Ottawa that still has Genesis copies of Mortal Kombat 3 at the original price of $99.99! The week before last, they were on sale for 50% off... so $49.99.

Oh yeah, I remember those. It's ironic to remember how much Super Metroid originally cost, and still think that paying $25 for a used copy at Gamestop is a rip-off. :P
In the heyday of the Super NES, I was young, so I usually only got Super NES games for birthdays and Christmas, and even then, my parents would get me used copies. Although one Christmas I got Donkey Kong Country brand new with a Donkey Kong T-Shirt that Babbage's included when you reserved a copy of the game. Even though it doesn't fit, I wish I still had that shirt.

I remember when I was like 3, I was playing outside and saw a garage sale and went there. They had a super mario bros 2 shirt that showed a bunch of the characters and I ran home to tel my dad and I bought it. I dont know what happend to it though. And yes I were my Donkey Kong country shirt because I don't really care too much hfor it being dsplayed cause there is no point.
