You've all seen it, maybe you don't recall where. Remember the Legend of Zelda commercial for the NES game with the two kids playing the game along to the Zelda rap? Yeah the kid in the jean jacket and the nerd with the white shirt and cowboy neck thing.
At then end of the commercial there is a still shot of a NES, but it has BLACK reset & power buttons. What's up with that?
I couldnt find the link to the commercial, but I know it's hosted somewhere at gaming age. It would help solve the mystery if someone could post that link here.
Anyone got an idea? This has baffled me for a long time.

I've got that commercial on my hard drive in mpeg format. And yes, I've noticed the black-buttoned NES but never really gave it much thought. Figured it was just one of those dumb things you see in commercials. Another interesting fact about this particular commercial is the words "LEGEND OF ZELDA SOLD SEPARATELY" appearing in the graphics of the Zelda title screen when the geeks turn on the NES. Another one of those goofy commercial thingies I guess.

I saw an NES controller the other day with a bright orange dpad and hot pink buttons....anything to that or just a home-made mod?

Those controllers with orange buttons may not be a home made mod, I came across an nes controller exactly like that once. I've also come across an rf unit with a grey wire instead of a black one, it worked fine though. Wierd @_@

Those gamepads with bright colored buttons were the victims of a controller refurbishing kit. It included new buttons and rubber pads to replace the worn, original pieces.

O...k...? So is anyone going to put a link to the commericial?

This isn't exactly the commercial in question, but it's interesting anyway. Should bring back some memories for those of us who grew up in the 80's. It's a really goofy Zelda commercial... almost as bad as the one with the rap song.

I'd imagine that NES was just a mockup for use in the commercial. Kinda of like preview box art that you see in game stores.
I think the controller kit's name was Doc's or something.

You guys went totally off topic there - but I thought the same thing - just a mock up for the advertisement shoot. Someone needs to post the commercial link here though...

A bit less off-topic...
I have a toaster NES that I found in a thrift store a few years ago, and the "Nintendo Entertainment System" logo across the front of the 'lid' is a VERY light grey instead of the normal red. Any idea where that's from?

I think portnoyd's right, it does look like a mockup. Thanks nes.god for the link. That kid couldn't get more nerdier, and the rapping should have been left out.

I wonder what happened to taht console. My guess is one of those kids has it, but it would be amazing to find that in a thrift store.

Hey guys,
Not only does that unit have black buttons, but that cartridge has no name on the black label.
Oh, and it's not gold (ok, Zelda reissue wasn't gold. but this was a first run commercial, right?)

Who knows, maybe it was one of the dorks units that was in the commercial and they used it and he just colored the buttons or something. Look at how many people put stickers and other crap on game systems.

I think it's one of those mysteries one is meant to ponder but never really know the answer to :o , there were a lot of wierd unexplainable things to come out of the 80's, and this is another one in the pile. I hate to admit it, I really do like that commercial though :eek 2:

That kid in the commercial...wow. What can i possibly say about him?
Oh yeah! Someone, i dont know who, but someone went to great lengths to make him the single dorkiest individual on the face of this earth.
He is a dork and dork cliches all rolled into one.

Thanks for hosting the commercial. I feel a little dorkier just by watching it...

Regarding the black-buttoned NES: yeah it could be a mockup, but it could also be the first-run limited production of the NES (ie. when Nintendo tested the NYC market in 1985). On the other hand, if that were the case, the black-buttoned NES would pop up in auctions and what not, once in a while.
And since the "Zelda cart" is nothing like the final release, it's probably just a set of mock-ups, in the same way Atari used mockup screenshots of its games in its old catalogs.

Uh oh. I hope they don't find out my parents haven't helped me hook up our NES in over 14 years.
