View Full Version : Section Suggestion - The Rares of Tomorrow...

A question many people ask me is for my opinion on what I think will be the highly sought after titles of tomorrow. I think the beauty of being a collector and a true video game enthusiast is that we have an ability to prognosticate the future collectability of titles in the secondary gaming market.
That said, what if DP pinned a thread which we could add to for each of the systems (in a seperate thread) which had all of our combined predictions on titles.
Please don't reply with the standard "use the search feature, it's been discussed to death" - that's not what IMHO people need. I really don't want to read a discussion from November on how Mr. Mosquito is available in Circuit City bargain bins. If you want my 2 cents, that won't be a collectable at all. They printed a ton and by putting the words "FRESH GAMES" on it doesn't make it either rare or good. I'd also not like this to turn into the old - you shouldn't buy games just to make money - I don't so I'm asking you not to go there (in this thread anyway - it's a valid conversation to have though).
I really found the need to read the opinions of all of you after holding a copy of Spirits and Spells for the GC over the weekend. I have such a weird hunch about that game and it's not as bad as people say. It would have been great to see what others thought and find it in a simple place on the dp site.
Keep up the good work and I'd be interested to hear what others thought.
Peace through gaming,

Yes, it would help us to get great games before they reach three digits prices on ebay.
Some games I think will be sought after in near future: Otogi - Myth of demons, REZ, ICO, Amplitude, Frequency ans Disgaea - Hour of Darkness.

yea, i think a section like that would be a good addition and i would love to see it. i like hearing people's thoughts on what they think will become the next super rare games.

We've had a plethora of specialty forums in the past that just don't get used that often. I forsee this "speculation" forum as doing the same thing, it's 'hot' for a short period of time, then it just fizzles out.
If you don't care what people said last year about a certain game and how much it may have been worth, then feel free to bump that topic and solicite new opinions, because maybe in that few months a new warehouse of stock, a second print, etc. may have been discovered and it is no longer the rarity it was once thought to be. Eventually what is new news, is old, and what you hate about "older opinions" may hold true for any topic created in section.
From time to time, people post "possible rarity alert" and I'd rather read a few sporatic topics than see an entire section created and not get used after a few months.

Ico is a greatest hits title, and I really doubt it would be worth much one day due to that alone.
My suggestions are...
Cubix for PS2
Woody Woodpecker for PS2
That's all I can think of off hand right now. LOL

Dragon's Lair 3D for the PS2. I can't find the damn thing anywhere and it rarely pops up on ebay.

Cubivore and Zoocube GCN.

There have been topics about future rarities in the past, but I really don't see it as being popular enough to base a whole forum on (certainly not as popular as a shmup, 2D fighter, or classic RPG forum would be anyways).
And it seems to me that with the volume of video games these days, it's extremely unlikely for even a rare game to go triple digits anytime soon (ie, you will probably be able to find Cubivore for regular prices for at least another year or so).

That title is available at Gamestop and EB by me.
I don't see any of the modern games becomming permanent collectables.
Sure, Cubivore had a limited release for the GC as did Fox Hunt for the PSX. Does that make them collebtable? They're CD based games.

Just curious what on earth a game being cd based would have to do with it's "collectability." I'm really lost on this one....

Personally, I prefer cartridge based games myself. There's something about games on CD that seems immaterial somehow. That's just me though.
However, I think the fact that people collect for the SegaCD, 3DO and Saturn pretty much prove that even CD based games can be collectable.

CDs are too easy to replicate which just doesn't make them collectable to me.

Easy to replicate=only one source copy. I collect a lot of carts and alot of others do as well. You CAN copy carts with somewhat relative ease. Not many people do it because the tools aren't everyday tools. CD based stuff will be very collectable in the future and the biggest factor will be scratches and disc doctor. Keep your stuff nice kiddies ;)

And carts are easily available in ROM format so why should I bother collecting them. ;)
I'd much rather pay money to have an original game/dvd/music cd in my hands than a bootleg. It just ain't the same, and I'm sure future buyers will feel the same way.

Thank you for saying that Kristine...
I think a big thing in the hunting of newer cd based games it not to just get the disc (as it is with a cart), but to find the damn things complete, and as a original release.... sure i can go buy a GH, or Platnium Hit, or Players choice kinda game, but when you've got a original copy of that game, ecpecially one thats gone through the reprints, in the future that will get the value of the game up there. Cause hell i will not own a GH type game, and if that means hunting for 6 months in the wild to find one, then so be it...

One problem with this is that you're talking about games that have much larger production runs than a lot of the older carts had. These days, when one talks about a game that was only available in limited quantities, like Ico or Cubivore, you're talking about a run of 10,000+. There are third-party VCS games like Confrontation that had production runs of under 10. Assuming that CD based games do become collectable in the future, the collecting community would have to be much larger than the current classic gaming community to get anywhere near what a game like Confrontation brings.
Don't get me wrong, I love modern games. One of my favorite systems of all time is the PS2. I just don't think that a game that is temporarily unavailable now will necessarily become an expensive HTF collectable down the road.

You're probably right, but it's sure fun trying to "collect them all." LOL
I'm personally not collecting new games as an investment, but to show my friends and family what a complete and total geek I am. That, and I'll probably never get bored. :P

I don't care what is rare or not. Sure it's nice to have some knowledge of rare games for when you're at the flea or whatever, to get some stuff for future trade bait or what not, but I'd rather buy good games than rare ones.

I'm working on the US Gamecube rarity list, and will post some of the harder to come by games within the next couple of weeks.
Truth is, these probably won't become "rare" for at least 5-10 years, as evidenced by games for other systems. However, having some idea about what is difficult to come by will give you an advantage.
There are a lot of good points made here. However, whether you collect to collect, speculate for value or whatever your "schtick" is in this hobby, just remember - we are all in this for different reasons.
Your reason isn't necessarily the right one, or better than anyone elses.
Just enjoy what you like about the gaming hobby (even if you think that other's collecting ideas are retarded.) LOL
Peace,
Steve

I didn't read the whole thread, forgive me. I just have to mention the K-Mart exclusive labels for GCN games. Mario Sunshine, Metroid prime, etc. They come with a free guide.

I could see the Gamecube re-releases of Resident Evil 2, 3, and Veronica being rare in the future. They all sold under 40,000 copies, I have heard.

I voted no. There is already a thread about "modern rares" in the collecting forum. Remember the search is your friend.

Bah. I don't think we need that. Also, there's NO way to really tell what will be rare and/or in demand. I'm against it.
