View Full Version : Why doesn't Nintendo release a classics disk for GameCube?

Sega had the Sega Smash Pack for the Dreamcast, where they had a bunch of Genesis games on there.
How come Nintendo hasn't released a "SNES Greatest Hits compilation" for GameCube? It could have games like this on it:
1. Super Mario World
2. Zelda: Link to the Past
3. Super Metroid
4. F-Zero
5. Super Mario All Stars
6. Donkey Kong Country
etc, etc,.
It's strange to me that Nintendo has never done this.
Actually, to be honest....It isn't strange at all. Nintendo is super greedy and they would never want to put those games on one disk. I'm sure they have plans to use them in the future for some other purpose to make even more money!

Because Nintendo can make more money selling those games 1 by 1 as GBA carts. At least we got the Zelda disc.

Why release a bunch of games on the GC for $50 when you can release them separately (and have done so) for $30 a pop?

You can call them greedy if you want, but the truth is that every single for-profit business is "greedy". As long as suckers keep buying Super Mario Advance: Another Remake! for $30 it would be stupid to release them any other way. While it's frustrating for gamers like us, it's one of the few smart business decisions they've made lately.

I must agree here, every single buisness that isn't non-profit is in it for the money first and foremost. And as long as remakes still top the best seller lists why release 1 disk with 10 games for GCN at 50.00 when they release 10 games on 10 GBA carts at 30.00 each?
Plus there also talking about a TV Game System controller system like with atari for some older games. I think NES...which may be good!

Why don't you buy a GBA Flash Cart? You can play almost any NES game ever created on your GBA or GC Player. I couldn't live without mine.

No, it's my understanding that the GBA doesn't have the horsepower to run Genesis and SNES games. Otherwise, I'd be all over that too.

Then I'd have to be under the assumption that Nintendo lied when the touted this as a "32-bit" system....right?

I think it might make sence for Nintendo to take some of their older NES games -- the ones that are not as popular such as Kid Icraus, Dr. Mario, NES Play Action Football, etc. and bundle them onto one disc.
Plus rumors indicate that Nintendo is going to display some upcoming devices and/or prep's for the GC at E3. Let's just wait and see....

Was going to say something witty about the GBA Famicom release in Japan, but that's already been done -- good job folks!
Also wondering if the non-Nintendo games that appeared @ the 20th anniversary party were from companies that have their games resold with this system, hehe :D
Methinks Konami and Capcom missed out big time if that is so :)

Wrong.
GBA can barely emulate 8-bit Atari & NES. 16-bit emulation is possible but runs slows. Only way to play SNES games on GBA is via reprogramming.
Nintendo is selling NES & Super NES games on GBA. And giving away N64 games on Cube as bonus discs. They prefer that course.

Oh boy, I think about this question all the time!!!! I have bought all the great GBA remakes, espcially the remakes of the snes games, but I also have the original versions as well. I of course LOVE playing the original versions, on their original systems first.
Nintendo is not greedy, their just good business people. How can you call them greedy, I mean what company is just going to put out a disk with a bunch of games when they can do it separtely and make 5 times as much, just too be nice? I mean I would like that, but don't think it's going to happen. I do wish they would have more remakes like the Zelda disc, playing those old games on the gamecube is so much prettier and faster than playing the games on the GBA. I mean look at DK Country for the GBA. Those graphics suck compared to the original. I also own the Sonic mega collection.
I agree with the guy about making games like Kid Icarus, Bionic Commando, Dr. Mario, the less popular games and put those on one disk. I am all for remakes of games!
I however, will NEVER buy one of those joystick type things with like 10 games in it. Just isn't even close to the real thing! So I choose not even to waste my money. I also can't wait until they start putting out the hard to find N64 games. Too bad Nintendo didn't remake Mario Kart 64 as some kind of preorder bonus with MK:DD! :D

I wouldn't call Nintendo greedy either. I also don't mind paying 30 bucks a pop for GBA remakes because with the GBA, you get added value (ie: it's a portable now).

I would, without doubt buy a GC disc with all the retro classics, but if I buy em for the GBA I get just the 1s I want, and can play em on the go, a gaming necessity 8-)

Since it looks like NES games can be done very well on the GBA, how about porting SNES games to the GC?

An SNES Emulator for the GBA is being attempted at least.

how about somebody moves into the field of an emulator that will run on GC? Man, NOTHING runs on the gamecube. Linux does run......but that's just silly, we need something with function.

I was thinking of something regarding the Famicom re-releases for the GBA in Japan. Notice that the third party titles are all from Namco? It's maybe due to the Triforce project (on which Nintendo, Namco and Sega have worked together)? Since Sega was competing against Nintendo during the Famicom days, that'd explain why Namco's the only one involved.

Well, to me a dream come true is to have over 100 NES games on my flash cart at one time. Nothing is cooler than that.

Thanks for confirming. That emu runs slow and no sound!

Can you play Snes games on that thing?
The problem with emulating the Snes is that it had a main cpu and a graphic cpu. The Nes only had the main cpu making it easier to emulate.
Then when you add the problem of some games using the FX chip it becomes next to impossible .
But the advantage the GBA has, is that it has a main cpu and a graphics cpu also.
So Snes on the GBA could happen with some incredibly tight coding. IMHO.

Full snes emulation will never happen on the GBA. Here are some reasons:
1) Sound hardware on the GBA is primitive compared to the snes
2) The screen resolution on the GBA is too little
3) The GBA processor is too slow

WOW, SNES and N64 ports to the gamecube would be my dream come true!!! There is alwasy hope that it may happen someday.

They said it would never happen on the Gp32 either.

It's already happening.....There are Snes and N64 emulators for the Gamecube out right now.
It's just kind of pointless to do it though, since you have to be connected to your computer. Just do it on your computer. x_x

But won't such an obviously greedy move anger and alienate people, especially potential new customers?

I heard it was to be classic Genesis games, going along with the Genesis theme this week. I might pick up a genesis one if it has games I don't own yet, or has classic games that I could take places portably.
and neat, 2000 posts :)
