I was under the impression that as of the 22nd all Gamestops would stop taking in 8 and 16bit games and that they existing stock was going to go on sale. Well today I went to my local Gamestop and while they have stopped taking in older trad-ins, the employees know nothing of a sale on existing stock.

Do you guys have any inside info that you can share?

Well, I don't work at Gamestop, but I can answer your question since I'm close with a lot of people that work there.

Yes, they stopped accepting trade-ins on games on the 22nd, lots of stores stopped a little early, but 22nd was the official cut off date.

There is NO SALE as of currently. Lots of people think there will be because of the simple fact of message board/word of mouth rumors and speculation. Lots of people either assumed or hoped there would be a sale. But right now, theres no sale nor are there plans of any sale. What happens down the line is up the the GS higher ups.

They will keep the games they have, and sell them until there gone, When they get down to the nitty gritty commons left though I expect either a sale or a "destroy all leftovers" notice from the GS headquarters.

So as of now, all you can do it wait, hope, and keep checking in the store.

As far as I know, we stopped taking in all NES, Genesis, Dreamcast and SNES games Saturday, or the 21st. Sooner or later we will be shipping our current stock to other stores that have higher sells in that area....until eventually everything is weeded out. The only sales are the 30 percent off all Dreamcast related goodies.

I can't imagine that Gamestop would be doing a sale. I was working when we discontinued Saturn, and there was never a sale on that stuff.

Really?

So was I (but in Phoenix) and we did a buy 2 get 1 free on Saturn and Gamegear games.

Unfortunately, there will be no sale, from what I was told by my DM. Things like Saturn & Dreamcast, which has had its interest drop drastically, they want to get rid of, so a 30% off sale, or a buy 2 get 1 free sale pops up sometimes. They know that they can sell most of the NES, SNES, and even Genesis stuff at regular price.

Which begs the question, why stop selling them then?

Gamestop Corp. is owned and ran by trained monkeys.

I asked Gamestop Corporate the same thing in a long winded email, mainly targeting NES and SNES.

Here are the reasons they gave me:

1. Cartridge sales have dropped 30-50% each year.

2. The time invested in taking the games in on trade is not worth it, since each game has to be manually looked up since they don't have a scanable UPC.

3. Retail space is at a premium in our stores, and the mentioned systems are taking up room that will be used for PSP, PS3, etc. The existing displays for Xbox/PS2 can the expanded if there is more floor space, as well.

My email explained how interest in these games varies per store. Some stores sell well, other don't. Make the decision to remove them up to the indiviual store manager or their DM. I told them that retrogaming is getting hot now, and that nostalgia is a powerful selling tool. Pretty much all they said was "sorry, this is how it's going to be."

I'm very saddened by it, but life goes on, I guess.

:bawling: Gamestop used to be my only source of classic games. Really, they might lose money on this. Oh well whats done is done. We get sales every month and we had a sale on EVERYTHING. Buy 2 get 1.

Lucky me - the location I've been frequenting for years marked their remaining Saturn titles down to $1.99 each in the end. While very few were left, they certainly all came home with me.

Here's an even better question that I've been wanting to ask, but I did want to create a thread. When's the next buy 2, get 1 free? I promise I won't tell...
