Hi, my two favorire genre's are:

1. Run and Jump Mario type games: Games like Mario, Sonic, Aero the Acrobat, Kid Chameleon, stuff like that.

2. Action/Adventure: Games like Contra 3, Castlevania IV, Alien 3 (SNES), Super Turrican (SNES), stuff like that

As far as I'm aware, there are only two Playstation imports that I know of that would fall into either of these categories.

Hermie Hopperhead and Gunners Heaven. From what I understand Hermie Hopperhead is a run and jump type game with alot of puzzle elementes. And Gunners Heaven is a Gunstar Heroes ripoff.

I guess the PSX version of Metal Slug would also qualify. That being similar to Contra type games.

Any other PSX imports come to mind?

I especially like the 2D games, but I'm also cool with the 2.5 D stuff like the Crash Bandicoots.

Come on guys! You guys are the experts. You have to know of some 2D action/platform or action/adventure love on the PSX in Japan.

there are LOADS of them. i counted about 200 in the catalog i have, and i only stopped to post here. despite what you've heard, gunner's heaven is NOT really a gunstar heroes rip off, btw. here's a very short list to get you started:

panzer bandit
little ralph
dr. slump
firo & klawd
umihara kawase shun (more of a action/puzzle game, but still good)
floating runner (released in the u.s.)
cyber egg: battle champion
kid klown in crazy chase 2
cyber org
gungage
dangan
deep freeze
chaos break
crisis city
crisis beat
dam dam stompland
lone soldier (terrible, but hysterically so)
zeiram zone
spriggan lunar verse
microman
cosmowarrior zero
shake kids
metal slug x
metal slug (although some will say the saturn version is better)
silhouette mirage (ditto)

hope that helps...

I thought that Floating Runner and Lone Soldier were 3-D games. Or pseudo 3D.

I'm looking for 2D platforming bliss. Like Rayman and Abe's Oddworld and stuff of that nature.

But thanks for the list.

er...you probably should buy a japanese saturn then. even in japan there weren't as many 2D action games made for the ps (unless you count all the arcade collections and single game ports/rereleases from namco, nichibutsu, capcom, sunsoft, taito, and some of the budget simple 1500 releases)- the system's "strengths" were also, some of the "3D/psuedo 3D" stuff is amazingly fun, and you'd be missing out on some cool titles if you ignored them...

I have a modded Saturn too, that can play imports. So I'm definitely doing thtat. But I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't forgetting about any 2D platformers that might have been on the Playstation in Japan.

By the way, do you happen to know which of the Rockman games were the best on the PSX? Are any of those games better than the Saturn versions?

From what I understand, a number of the Mega Man games were also on the PSX, so I'm kinda interested in those too. I know alot of them made it stateside, but I think a few of them didn't make it stateside.

Oh, one other thing. What about all the Dracula X games and Castlevania games? Weren't some of those only released in Japan? Any of them really, really good?

Thanks for any insight on this.

all the castlevanias on the psx in japan were released here. you'll want the saturn dracula x, as it's got a level and character not in symphony of the night. if you had a choice between playing rockman on the saturn and rockman on the psx, go with the saturn versions.

For the record, I thought the two Rockman X games (3 and 4) for the Saturn were kind of lame. They just look too 16-bit to me. Rockman 8, however, is wicked.

Well Rockman X3 was originally on the Snes so it supposed to be 16 bit. They only added the video for the PSX/Saturn version and the loading times weren't that great. Rockman 8, X4 and Super Adventure Rockman were mostly the same for the Saturn/PSX versions. PSX had exclusives of Rockman 1-6 which were orignally on the NES as well as X5 and X6.

As for other 2d titles not mentioned already

Goemon 2 of them would classify for what your looking for.
Wolffang
Wonder 3(one of them is a platformer)
Earthworm Jim 2
Strider 2
