OK here is what just happened. I got a PAL PS1 game. Tried to play it on my NTSC PS1 (old version, not the resized PSone). Obviously, normally this wouldnt work. But I have a 'Game Enhacer' that plugs into the I/O port on the back of the PS. I have used it in the past to play Japanese games, like when I imported Cowboy Bebop. So, the PAL game would still not load, I figured it was worth a try. So I checked out the Game enhancer instruction and it said press a certain button combo to switch to PAL. so i did that but the game wouldnt load. BUT NOW since I did that regular games wont load, even when the game enhancer is not plugged in. Then I realized that pressing this button combo doesnt allow for play of PAL games, it was switching the game enhancer for use on a PAL system. But now my PS1 wont play regular games, what gives? Is there a memory chip or battery in the PS1? Have I altered the bios somehow?
I have another Playstation, the resized PSone, but does this mean that my PS1 is screwed? ...ugh...

If you can't get it to work, try smacking it really hard. That got my CD player to start reading CDs again.

It loads the Sont Computer Entertinament Screen and then the PS logo and plays that cool startup music, but then the disk just spins and spins - and doesnt load.
I can't really see how pressing 2 buttons on an import game device would ruin my PS. I sure hope someone can help with some info. Worst comes to worse, does Sony still repair model 7xxx PS1s? I'd hate for this system to just be broken.

Sounds like your laser just went kaput. If the bios was changed (which isn't possible, I don't think) it would've given a "Please insert a Playstation cd" message. My old PSX does the same thing: Boots up the bios and then spins forever.
Try placing it upside-down or on the side. If that does anything it's your laser. If not, dunno...

Somehow I doubt it's a lazer issue. But I cant confirm that (well not til I get home and test it). But this PS1 has been in my closet until I tried playing the PAL game yesterday. But I didnt try booting up a standard NTSC game first last night when this whole debaucle took place. so I'm not sure if the problem was alreayd there or if playing the PAL game with the game enhancer did it. The one thing that makes me worry is that the Game Enhancer instruction sheet says in small print at the bottom, something like 'warning, US playstations are NOT PAL, therefore switching to pal will disable your game enhancer and voice your warranty'. They dont define 'disable', and that little message just makes me worry. Seems really odd that that would break my PS1.
At the very worst I'll have to send it to SONY, but I'll post an update as to the result of flipping the sucker over like I did to my First PS1 back in the day...ugh...
