so i just picked this up for $1.99, and am a bit confused... this definitely doesn't look like any cdi case i've seen before. anyone have any ideas on this? was this an original case before they switched to what you see on most of the games? an import version? i don't have a cdi to test thing out, and have no prior experience with cdi... so... here's the pic

It was the original case. Quite a few titles have this...Battle Ship, Comptons, Jigsaw, Smithsonian....

Mostly first party titles, but not limited to.

so that explains that... another question though. i realized this doesn't have any instructions. did it come with any? it has a giant fold-out of other cd-i products, and a registration card... no manual.

and are these any rarer than the later releases in a different case?

They all came like that at first. Actually I think you're missing the outer cardboard slipcover (the case you have should have been surrounded by a full-color thin cardboard "wrapper"). And yes, it has instructions.

I don't think all CD-i games were re-distributed in normal CD cases, nor have I seen any "longbox"-style games that I'd call rare in any way.

Defender of the Crown is done really well on CD-i though. Enjoy it!

Oldergames.com has some CD-i titles in stock, with pictures of a few "longbox" titles, if my description above doesn't explain the packaging vividly enough:
