Welcome to the opening round of "Theme O' the Week" (tm), a division of "Game O' the Day" (tm) and "Topic O' the Moment" (tm)*.
In Theme O' the Week, YOU make it happen. from Monday through Friday on these special theme weeks, it is YOUR job to create topics that inspire thought, discussion, and creativity surrounding the theme at hand.
The forums will run as normal, but it will up to YOU to make a theme week a success. On any given day, the forum will have a noticeable flavor, if participation is high. If you've been a subscriber to the Digital Press paper 'zine, then you already "get it". Don't let the themes dictate what you discuss, but if you've ever wondered or wanted to share something regarding that theme, this is YOUR chance!
Samples of threads that you might start.
- A thread dedicated to your favorite game related to the theme.
- A poll with your favorite characters pertaining to the theme. What's everyone else's favorite?
- Discussion on the worst games related to the theme.
- A collector's "did you know" about that theme.
- A gamer's "hardest/easiest" game related to the theme.
Get it? The possibilities are endless.
Theme O' the Week will run in spurts, perhaps one week each month, or less if participation is low.
Try your hand at it! If you create a popular thread with this theme, YOU will get to choose the next Theme O' the Week!
Carry on... start a thread today or share your thoughts about theme weeks in general here. Our experienced think tank will be standing by to assist!

I just got my first Genesis a few weeks ago and it's pretty great. I'm really looking forward to building my collection. I've had some pretty good luck getting some really cool games in the meantime.

Mr. Smashy - I don't quite recognise the cartridges you've got there next your console, although the blue one looks kinda familiar. BTW - I've heard if you insert those incorrectly it can damage the machine. LOL

Nah, those are SegaCD games... they're holographic data storage which the laser can read. In order to get them to work, you have to push them up against the laser lens. Make sure to grind them in there to be sure of a solid connection.

My brother used to have a Genesis until he sold it to buy an N64. Although I never had one myself, I played his all the time. The pack-in cart was The Lion King and over time his Genesis collection included Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles, Altered Beast, X-Men, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Lakers Vs. Celtics. I miss it and I am thinking about buying one for myself in the future.

I'm actually really glad that this is the topic...I have a problem with my Genesis. Whenever I try to use it, the picture bounces up & down on the screen...basically like what happens when the tracking gets screwed up on a VCR. Does anyone know if this is a fixable problem?

I am by no means the man with all the answers but I will try to help and at least bump this post up. ;)
Could it be the wrong channel? (3/4)
Do ALL games do this?
When did it work last?
Have you tried a different TV?
Bad cables?
Anyone else?

Well thanks for trying...here's the thing: we just recently got a new TV. Before that, I'd always been using our 25-year-old TV to play video games, but I never ever had a problem with it. I haven't tried the Genesis since we got the new TV...but my 2600 & NES still do work, so I'm assuming the Genesis still doesn't work. I haven't tried at all in a few months - last time I tried it though, it was messing up with all my games. I barely played it when I was younger, so it's not like I beat it to death or anything.
It just seems strange because the newest, least used of my 3 systems is the one that won't work...

I'd certainly suggest trying it on your new TV. I remember reading recently that there were a handful of older TVs that for some reason are not compatible with the Genesis/Megadrive. I can't remember the affected manufacturer though. Who is your old TV made by?

Our old TV is a Sylvania...to be more specific, it's a "Sylvania Superset" lol. That's strange though b/c I never used to have a problem with the Sylvania & the Genesis. I think I'ma go dig out the Genesis right now & see what happens...

i bought my genesis shortly after launch... it took me a while to save up the 189$ (plus tax) for it, but it was worth it.
I actually had three games for it before I had the system, thanks to the buying/selling part of the newspaper (those three games were ghouls and ghosts, last battle, and mystic defender).
i think the first game i played on it was altered beast- i liked that game a lot, and still do.... but the one game that still blows my mind is ghouls and ghosts- that game was/is incredible
i love the genesis- its probably my favorite game machine

Today is the last day of this inaugural edition of theme week.
Get your threads and comments in! I'm going to choose someone who showed the most theme week "spirit" and that person will get to choose the next theme, which we'll run a few weeks from now.
Share the Genesis love!
Ah...the Genesis. The "hardcore" system vs the Nintendo "pansy" system.
Let's see. My friends all owned the Genesis. I didn't care one way or the other because I had zero interest in video games. My best friend and I would go bar hopping every Friday night, I'd meet him at his place....and I'd see his Genesis sitting in it's place on the coffee table with EA's NHL 95 permanently sitting in the slot. He'd ask me if I wanted to fire it up, and I'd always say "no, it's okay, I don't know how to play video games".
He phoned me one day and said "C'mon over. I gotta show you something!" I walked into his living room........and there was the brand new launch day N64......with a little guy named Mario running around a castle courtyard.....in 3D. I freaked. THIS I had to try. Since I'd never played anything before, the control stick was easy. 3D I could do!!!
Suffice it to say that from that initial day I immediately earned my hardcore wings. I bought a 64 and every piece of software that I could put into it. I scored a job in the gaming industry. Soon I was telling my friend what was what in the gaming world. A PSX came into the house almost instantly. I was working at the time of the Dreamcast, PS2, XboX, GBC, and GBA console launches.
After a few years, I burned out. I left the industry one year ago. I wanted something simpler. Someone gave me an old model 1 Genesis and a boxed copy of Shining Force #1...for free!. Maybe 2D was it? I knew which games were big ones on the Genesis, even though I'd never played any. I'm fortunate enough to live in a small city where older systems and carts are junk to be used as trade in allowance against PS2 stuff. It's been easy to score near-mint boxed copies of some of the bigger Genesis titles. Where else can you find TWO complete copies of Gunstar Heroes sitting on the same shelf for $4 each? Or Sword Of Vermillion complete with it's near-mint 106 page walkthrough book for $5? It's a candyland for retro-gamers because everyone around here sees it as old sh*t. My biggest score to date? A sealed, never opened Genesis Model 2 NFL94 Giftset.....for $24.
I've since grown a sizeable Genesis collection......most having boxes and instructions. I've started on an NES collection as well. Monique told me to join Digital Press, so here I am. I can see why all of you are retro junkies. The games are much more challenging and the presentation relies on story over flash. It's also nice to be able to buy carts for 1 or 2 dollars at any pawn shop.
What ever happened to my friend's hallowed copy of NHL 95? I scored it!!!
By the way....my fave Genny game carts? Either Domark's Formula One, Super Monaco GP (1 or 2), Shining Force....or Monopoly.
First Genny game that I finished? Streets Of Rage #2.
Latest score? This week I bought a complete copy of Sunsetriders that had probably never been touched, for $6.

Theme week is over, the participation was terrific so we'll keep it up. We'll do the next theme week at the end of March.
As promised, I'm choosing one person who participated that I felt had the most "theme week spirit". Tough call, because many of you created some great topics and added your thoughts to many others.
I'm going to go with "Gamereviewgod" on this one though. A few very good topics (the "you love/they hate" thread went on fire) and participation in just about every other themed thread. Close call but he gets the nod.
Gamereviewgod, you get to choose the theme for the next theme week - let me know what you'd like to choose before 3/20 via PM or e-mail. Congrats!
Thanks for playing along, all.
