Silpheed:The Super Dogfighter

I think Silpheed:TSD was the best of the series, which sadly got watered down with each sequel. Anyone play the game and beat it? What were your strategies in, what I dub, 'boss alley' and the fight versus the Gloire? I just picked the lasers to rush through the mini-bosses but would suffer to much damage by the time I get to the Gloire. The furthest I got in fighting the Gloire was when it began to spit out little orbs that shot things at me. What happens when you beat it? What happens in the storyline at the end?

Man, I loved Silpheed. It's one of the few PC games I had a copy of... used to play it in my Journalism class in my senior year all the time. Never finished it, though.
