View Full Version : Has a game ever inflicted physical pain on you?

One game that comes to my mind is Mario Party (first) on N64. There was a section with a windup shyguy toy and you had to spin the joystick in circles as fast as you could (the joystick on the N64 ;) ) within 10 seconds and I used the palm of my hand. After the first try it burned, if I tried another time or two mypalm was beat red, or forming blisters or even ripping or lifting the skin from my hand.

Have any stories?

Playing DDR for hours in consecutive days....not being smart enough to take a day off to let my muscles relax. My knees HATE me.

As I said in my Drummania topic, I GOT BLISTERS ON MY FINGERS and I get Popeye arms too.

My friend Ryan and I had to take a break during a game of NES Ice Hockey because our thumbs were screaming.

I got some mad blisters from king of the monsters 2. The game requies you to contantly run your fingers back and forth when you are wrestling an oppenent. Multiple that by 100, and you no longer have any skin on your thumbs. I finally solved this problem by putting a section of a ziploc bag between my thum and the d-pad. No more problems
I talked to this guy on the forums a while back, (forget his name), and he had played mario kart for 12 hours straight. Thew next day he couldnt move his forarms, and had to go to the hospital. This guy was one of those lucky sons-a-bitches who plays games for a living, and has had these problems before. Small price to pay...

I once played DDR all night and was very sore the next day.

At the Austin Gaming Expo on July something 2003, I permanantly messed up my hands, playing a 10 hour marathon of Super Mario Kart Battle Mode 386 rounds won, 2 rounds lost. My hands have never been the same since. I spent weeks in agony after I woke up the next morning.

If I play an intense game for more than 20 mins straight my hands hurt. Because I either grip the controller too tightly or mash the buttons. I cant help it.

I dunno, I think I'd miss being able to wipe my own butt :)

Way back when the NES was still pretty new, I was playing Super Mario Bros. with a friend. He was Mario and I was Luigi. Maybe he was a little slow in figuring out the mechanics of controllers at the time but he had a tendency to swing the controller to the right in an effort to jump further.

On one big jump, he hammered me right in the nose.

Needless to say, he was Luigi from then on.

If I recall, Nintendo had to issue a protective glove for this game after hearing many similar complaints about the blisters/pain. Who knows, maybe those things are getting some bids on ebay (the gloves, not the blisters).

Once I was cleaning an NES cart and I sliced my finger open.

I have also experienced the "Plam Rub" from Mario Party.

Just the other day I put a blister on my thumb from playing MvC 2 for the DC. I am working on unlocking everything. I am used to getting blisters on my thumb though. Too much Street Fighter back in the day. I still don't use an analog.

I remember reading about Nintendo offering a protective glove for Mario Party owners in Nintendo Power.

For me, I used to get blisters on my thumb playing Super NES a few years ago because I had a bad controller where I had to press the left button on the d-pad down hard for it to work. After a month of this I replaced the controller.

The only thing that comes to mind is slepp deprivation and severe eye strain, from 12 straight hours of Simcity, with my nose about 4 inches away from a 13 inch radiation emiting monitor.

For me Zelda: Ocarina of Time gave me headaches. But that was after playing for hours and hours straight without jusing the guide. I should have just walked away and taken a brake. The game was and is too good though!!!

DDR and Pump it Up: The occasional messed up leg
Drummania: Sore, nearly immobile forearms and fingers
Pop'n Music: I must have mashed a nerve in my hand, because my thumb twitched for like 2 days

The Virtual Boy has a bad reputation for hurting your eyes and head.

I felt something in my chest pop once when I was intensely jamming the buttons in Track & Field 2 for NES.

Hurt like a sumbitch, too.

I used to play 6-7 hours a day, but even if I played 36 hours straight I doubt I would die in real life not from a PKer.

Me and 3 firnds once played Mario Part 1 for 16 consecutive hours...... we had multiple blisters on our hands and some of them even started to bleed...... we couldnt move our hands for an entire week (I had to wear bandaged hands at work and everything!) ah the good old days.... still miss playing that game

One time I was playing this Japanese dating sim and my sweetie broke up with me, so I slit my wrists.
:D

Seriously, many arcade stand-up cabs make my hands go numb/asleep from playing for a while....not sure why.

Whenever I play a non-RPG, my eyes start hurting. I don't blink enough during action sequences.

The torture sequence in MGS gave me hella thumb cramps. If I get arthritis, I'm sueing Hideo Kojima. But hey, it's still easier than the button-mashing soda game in the fair in Chrono Trigger. Has ANYBODY ever beaten that?

Heh... when I read this topic's name, the first thing that came to mind was Mario Party and having the skin on the ball of my hand burned off when I rotated it with the palm. Then I read it as the first post. LOL

There's a reason why Tug O' War is my least favorite minigame... the only other instance I can think of right now is Mocap Boxing... the last battle really takes it out of you. My pain was primarily caused by exhaust, and I had to take a breather to recharge myself, having to continue in the process as I was getting my ass beaten up. I was so deprived of energy, I lost my sense of perception, and for a K.O. punch, I hit the screen! Fortunately, no damage to me or the screen, and none of the staff of the arcade noticed. Very lucky, as I could have been scolded or even kicked out of the place. ^^;

I used to play this maze arcade and there were little metal screws near the tracball. Everytime you were playing and hit a screw you would get a little shock. At first its no big deal, but eventually it starts to hurt and annoy you.

no, electrical....seriously.

I email nintendo about it with no response.

not much, maybe 6-8 volts....enough to zap you and sometimes drop the controller
