I am a BIG Sega fan, but even I have to admit the sound in many of those games now rattles like a garbled keyboard stuck in a tin can. While the gameplay of the Genesis was probably considered the best, the sound gets my vote for the big sore spot. Can anyone think of their vote for the worst sound on the system? Music or Voice can count!

My vote for voice.......Super Street Fighter II.......ugh :eek 2:

I have to disagree with you here.

I think the Genesis have got really good sound hardware for music, it's just that it's harder to get the best out of it, compared with say the SNES. The combination of the FM chip and the PSG is rally powerful, just listen to Revenge of Shinobi, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts and Streets of Rage etc.

Where the Genny does fall down is sample playback. Nearly all the games that use samples sound 'garbled' - like they used a really low sample rate. SF2 is a good example, like you mentioned.

What's weird is Star Control by Accolade has much better sound samples than all of Sega's 1st party games....

I love "The Tick," but it took me a really long time to realize that garbled message he was saying in between levels was in fact "Spoooooon!" LOL

That was one of my favorite cartoons...

I'd say the worst sound was Batman Forever, just consider when it was released in the genny cycle, it was horrible!

Fantasia made me sad with its renderings of great Classical music.

The problem is yeah it had some gems....but I own 400+ Genny games and the duplication of chimes and sounds in many games is GRATING. For me the power of the Genesis was is game speed, which rocked

This one's easy... Awesome Possum Kicks Doctor Machino's Butt!

"Heim Affum!"

Wait a minute... WHAT did he say?!

The Genesis version of Mortal Kombat also annoyed me with its ambiguous soundtrack, which couldn't decide if it was taken from a cheesy kung fu movie or an Elvis Presley album.

i never heard bad sound from my genesis-
i think that system by far had the best sound at the time-
have you used the headphone jack for stereo?
if you do, then it cuts down on the distortion quite a bit, which may be why some of the games sounded a little like shit to you

of course some of the programming can be off- but i never heard any music or sound effects on the genny which bothered me or got my attention for being poor

I vote for Lion King. The SNES one sounded very much like the actual song. But the Genesis one just hurts.

WISE FWOM YOUR GWAVE!

I dont really get how the Genesis can have crap voices in certain games (MK, SF2 so on) but other games its great (Toejam & Earl, Zoom!)
