TREASURE, one of the favorite smaller third party developers, broke off from Konami to create their own games in the early 90s, and their first games were for the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive.

What is/are your favorite(s) of their early SEGA output? Or which ones didn't you care for?

The Games:

:GUNSTAR HEROES:
Two player contra game on steroids, with anime influence and pretty amazing special effects for the Genny.

:DYNAMITE HEADDY:
Bizarre platformer with multiple "head" powerups

:McDONALD'S TREASURELAND:
platformer starring the worlds favorite burger pushing clown

:ALIEN SOLDIER: (import)
another very pretty run 'n shoot game, but this time you fight boss characters very often!

:LIGHT CRUSADER:
Isometric adventure game.

:YU YU HAKUSHO: (import)
Four player Street Fighter II type game with two fields of play, based on an anime series.

My favorite is Gunstar Heroes, based on how fun and entertaining it is. The different weapons powerup combinations, along with the varied gameplay make it one of my favorite Genny games.

Alien Soldier could give it a run for its money when I get back to playing (and trying to beat) it.

Haha .. good one. How could I choose?

Well, I have to admit actually, that my favourite is probably Dynamite Headdy. I think it has more lastability than the others. I still haven't finished it ...

Yu Yu Hakushu can be good fun, but only really if you have 3 or 4 players. My friends used to refer to this as the "Flying Dildo Attack" game, in reference to a particularly phallic special attack that one of the characters can perform. Kinda self explanatory I guess .. if you've played the game any length of time then you must know the one I mean!

After that it would probably go Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Light Crusader, Treasureland Adventure.

I'd say Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Heady. I've never played Yu Yu Hakusho as I could never find a rom of it, and Alien Soldier and Light Crusader I haven't really played too much of yet. Light Crusader didn't really grab me, and Alien Soldier seems hard to get the hang of but I'll probably give it another shot later. Admittedly I didn't play it for a long period.

Treasureland Adventure I have to admit is suprisingly fun, even if it's one of the easiest platformers I've ever played. Something about it is really addicting though. And I hate McDonalds, so that's saying a lot.

My top honor would have to go to Gunstar Heroes. It's the best balanced and most complete of the games Treasure released for the Genesis. I'd put Yu Yu Hakusho in second place... it's an interesting precursor to Guardian Heroes, even if it's not quite as complex.

Surprisingly, several of Treasure's other Genesis games weren't that special. Their McDonald's game was certainly no better than Virgin's Global Gladiators, and I tend to think that the boss-o-rama that was Alien Soldier was overrated. The play mechanics were somewhat awkward, and although the boss battles were quite memorable, the blandly designed levels sandwiched between them definitely weren't.

Just make sure you get the right one. There's another Genesis game called Yu Yu Hakusho Gaiden which is some kind of digital comic or RPG. I played that for a minute, and hated every minute of it.

Gunstar Heroes - from a technological standpoint, one of the only Mega Drive games to 'wow' me. The graphics in this are truly amazing - plus the gameplay is fantastic.

So far, the only other time a Mega Drive game has "wow'ed" me is when I first saw Sonic the Hedgehog 2's two player mode.

It goes like this:

1. Alien Soldier
2. Gunstar Heroes
3. Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyo Toitsusen & Dynamite Headdy
5. Light Crusader
6. McDonalds' Treasure Land Adventure

I take Alien Soldier over Gunstar Heroes for the sheer involvement and concentration it demands.
There are times I just begin to laugh as I try to press the buttons at the necessary pace.

Also the "powerdash" (can't recall the correct name) brings a nice tactical element into the game.

Hands down it's gotta be: Gunstar Heroes Run and gun action at it's finest.

You're missing the point of Alien Soldier then. The "levels" are only there at all so you can get powered up between bosses. They aren't actually meant to be levels really. If you've played it much, they star to pare them down even MORE later on....sometimes skipping them entirely. Furthest I've gotten so far was like level 24 on a good day....trust me, when you get that far you stop caring about any faults the game has....it's too intense!

Alien Solider was designed SOLELY to fight really cool bosses. There's no inherent level design and there isn't meant to be. The play mechanics are dead on once you get the hang of it too....it's not easy, but they're perfect for what the game is once you've mastered em!

Definitly Gunstar Heros. Got it from ClubNinja and anytime I hook my CDX up I gotta play least one or two rounds of it.
