View Full Version : Best Looking Console: Sega Genesis?

What do you think the best looking console of all time is?

The Atari 2600 with its wood grain and the Odyssey II with its silver finish both look dated. The NES and SNES are both too blocky; the SNES is better, but the purple buttons don't do it for me. I don't really like gray consoles, which rule out the Dreamcast and PSX. The Xbox is so big it needs its own zip code, the PS2 looks like a big heat sink, and the Gamecube looks like a purse for Japanese school girls.

The Genesis, in my opinion, got it right. First of all, it's black. Second of all, it's the right combination of curves and straight lines. The top is round but not too much so, and much of the design is subtle. Physically, it's my favorite looking console of all.

Asthetically speaking, what's your favorite console?

Original Famicom. It's so compact, and very beautiful.

And if that doesn't count, then the Gameboy Advance. I don't know why, but for some reason, I occasionally find myself picking up my orignal GBA... not to play, but to look at.

Atari 5200! It's big, it's bold, it's beautiful. If you look at it from the side, it looks like a silouhette of the Turbo-Interceptor vehicle in the old Charlie Sheen movie The Wraith.

I do the same thing. yeah its really nice looking. though the little thumb pad is way too small for my fingers.

I also liked the design of the N64 and the Snes.. The cube looks kinda dorky but it is a cool system. just looks funny thats all.

I haven't seen every system, but the Turbo Duo stands out for me. I also like the Atari 5200 & 7800.

If I could include computer systems, I'd vote for the x68K, but I can't (or won't). Anyhow...

My vote would likely go to the Sega Dreamcast. It's a lovely little system, looks darn good. I especially like the variant which uses "old arcade systems" repackaged in a different color shell (forget the name, not R79 I think, though).

Edits: I can't think of a Genny variation that looks bad (including the Nomad). For looks, one of the best is the Mega Jet.

I agree with the Genesis 1, it looks so sleek, like it could kick the crap out of any other console.

I have to vote against the 5200. I like it all except that big plastic piece that flips up and down. If it had been made this decade you could have bought interchangable ones of different colors. It's sleek, but oversized.

Funny you mention the Genesis. I own approx ten consoles and periodically I, or a housemate, rotate an old retro in the living room and this week it happens to be my original Genesis, which might I add --still-- has never given me a single problem after what, thirteen+ years. That's a good lookin' console and you have to love the headphone jack for shere simplicity of use. One wire going to your hands, one to your ears -- if only one to plug into your forehead...

The venting, the logo, the slope... good steez.

I would have to vote for the Sega Dreamcast. Not to big not to small. Sleek. Pretty cool color. It gets my vote for best looking

I think I would have to go with the N64 also. It is a pretty sweet looking system, especially my translucent neon green one!

My vote defiantley goes to the Dreamcast. Second would be the gamecube.
It's just something about the color and design of the DC that I love.

I'd go for the Vectrex or Adventurevision. They just look so damn cool. Then I would vote for the Sega Sports DC.

If Darth Vader was a gamer he'd fire up a Genny.No. Wouldn't he fire up a Darth Vader 2600?

I like the Super Famicom. Especially when coupled with the unreleased CD add-on. That was sexy. I prefer it over the US SNES. The rereleased SNES was cool too. But there's something about the Super Famicom. I plan to get one as soon as I delve into import consoles. As well as a Famicom.

Too bad after the Super Famicom, they stopped making the two countries have different cases. Of course, if they didn't, we'd still be getting the lesser attractive versions anyway.

The two sexiest consoles ever are the Genesis model III and the PC Engine Duo-R. So sleek..so smooth..such curves...oh.....ohHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Out of all systems? Super Famicom Damn that looks 3 million times better than the SNES.

Out of my systems? I like my Genesis 1 (especially with a blue light)

My Saturn model 2 is very close 2nd. The Saturn looks light years better than a Playstation.

Dude... It's, like, soooo the Panasonic Q GameCube... No question about it.

Runners Up:

Sega Dreamcast - Love the way the back swoops up. Dangerous yet dainty!

GameBoy Advance SP - Does it get much cooler than the Platinum one? Nope.

Virtual Boy - But ya look like a dork playing one. And an even bigger dork stumbling around blind and vomiting afterward.

Panasonic REAL 3DO - The FZ-1 looks like it was designed by Greek Gods! I'd sooo tap that if I didn't have a girlfriend.

Fairchild Channel F - The VCS pales in comparison to the Model-1's 70's allure! Even though the controllers look like dildos.

Concert Hall IV - If Twiki from Buck Rogers and an 8-track player had a kid together, this pong system would be the result!

Is my avatar busted?

Yeah, I agree. Panasonic Q is good too. But I still like the Super Famicom.

They aren't showing up? WTF?!

I'd say Super Famicom too... But that's just the jealously talkin' since I don't have one.

Are they working now? It's like I've been walking around with my dork hanging outta my pants, and no one told me!

I'm pretty certain we've done this thread more than once in the past, but here's my answers, in brief:

1) Well, I completely forgot about the Q until these posts, but yeah, it's one gorgeous console.

2) 5200 - I've always loved the look of the 5200, and the fact that it was enormous didn't really bother me. When e got it in 1982, it lived above a large 25" Zenith. The TV was probably about the size of modern 36" TVs - the case was square, rather than curving around the innards at the back, as modern TV cases do, so there was a large, flat area on top to place your console or VCR.

3) Dreamcast or SNES - I thought the SNES looked very nice and modern. I also think the Dreamcast just looks fantastic.

As for the Genesis, I always thought it was just downright ugly. I don't even see anything in it's looks that suggest it would appeal to ANYBODY. I always assumed that with the Genesis everybody agreed it was ugly, but nobody cared. I'm surprised to read these posts tonight.

That line was a laugh out loud, milk out the nose moment for me and my son and I want to thank you for it. So, like, thanks.

I really like how the GameCube looks. I've got a Platinum cube with a matching Gameboy player, two matching GBA SPs and a matching Wavebird. All Platinum. I just like that they all match. I just wish the link cables for the GBA GC connection weren't purple cause it kinda clashes. My original wavebird and emerald blue controllers get kept in drawers unless I need them for monkey fight. Yes, it scares me that I may be a closet interior designer.

Oh, and the PS2 absolutely looks like a big heat sink, no question about it, but I really like the Ocean Blue controller for it.

I love my MVS, so I would vote that 1st. I wish I had a Q cube and would vote that second and I love the look of a Platinum Gamecube with a Platinum Gameboy Player and 4 Platinum controllers hooked up, so I would vote that third.

MVS? Maybe I've gone retarded (like my avatar and signature - see off topic).
Misty Vaginal Spray? I'm sure I deserve a little kick in the man-boobies for not knowing what this stands for.

It's short for the Neo-Geo Multi Video System. It's basically the arcade version of the Neo-Geo AES.
