Just wondering. The number seems to be decreasing all the time.

I think that they are increasing all the time. When I was a kid every, and I mean *EVERY* single boy in the world was a videogamer. Finding a girl who played videogames, on the other hand, was next to impossible (in my area). Fastforward to today, and it's pretty easy to find chicks who own a current system. And it looks like Portnoyd's apparant sex-change helps to back this up ;)

My question is: what is it with girls and puzzle games? It's like they are drawn to eachother.

Ranger-X
02-29-2004, 12:18 AM
Good question Morbis. A lot of girls I know, who are not really gamers, will be like, "Ooh I love Tetris!" or "I love Dr. Mario!". No idea why, I'd rather see girl gamers who like Final Fantasy or arcade classics.

I'm NOT, but a girl that lives upstairs at my college always comes down with her xbox to play 3 or 4 system linked halo with us....and she is pretty good. other than that, girls always love playing racing games like mario kart because it is pretty easy for them, only steering and gas.

Present! I'm a lady :) I like rpg games actually, but I'm working on sonic 2 (yay for the free genesis system I got along with this game), super mario world and sim city right now.
To answer the puzzle question, yes they're a interresting genre, but when I want a puzzle game I search for flash games on my computer, I don't play them on console. They must like it because it's easy to understand and it's kinda hard to mess up the controls playing tetris, or you're pretty lame.

*raises hand*

Puzzle games might be popular because they're the classic example of games that can be learned in a matter of minutes, yet present a constant challenge. I fall into the RPG-loving group. Not sure why that's so big among girls, too.

I will step up and completely blow away the stereotypes by announcing that I am currently playing Manhunt. :P

I've noticed that girls seem to like using their brains a bit more than the guys, who seem to favor pointless violence. (Not that there's anything wrong with pointless violence in a video game, just a trend I've noticed.)

Hi. I love shooters.

Erm... my mom? Okay, she's hardly an official gamer... well, she might be. The only games that I know her to play are Tetris, Klax, and Dr. Mario, and I can't remember the last time she played any of those... still, having a few virtual addictions of her own makes her understand better why video games are a way of life for me. I have the best parents. :D

Hi. I love shooters.

That can be taken in SO the wrong way ;) LOL

Quite a livewire my little kitty QoF is. As for the pointless violence bit, well I don't think you'll find too much of that in my collection, so maybe it's just American guys that favour it more? :P

Not exactly mayhem, I don't play any shooters myself, nor do I have any in my collection. I tried manhunt, and frankly it bored me to tears. So count me in with the men-hating-random-violence-games.

My fiancee is a girl gamer, having conquered most RPGs she can get her hands on. She prefers action-RPGs (ick) but she's taken out Final Fantasy 7 and Skies of Arcadia as well.

I'm a girl too and my fave genres are RPGs and schmups. I don't mind a good action or platformer game, tho. I've tried some shooters, but it doesn't come to me easily (maybe with some practice....).

Careful... some of them are man-haters and will viciously attack. But most of the grrls are friendly.

I'm a girl! :)

I do not fit the "girls only play puzzles and rpgs" mold. In fact, those are my two worst genres. I'm working on the rpg thing, though. My favorites are: action, adventure, FPS (mainly on Xbox Live), survival-horror, and extreme sports.

However, for the record, I absolutely love Pac Man, but prefer Ms. Pac Man. Those two games are what got me hooked as a child. Well, that and Pong.

Click on the link in my sig and you can see our (my husband -Voodoo at digital press, and mine) collection of games.

Not speaking for all ladies who game, but I like puzzle games because people can take turns playing them at a party, still hold a conversation and you can stop playing them after 5 minutes or 5 hours if you choose. They're perfect for casual gaming.

I'm all over the board. I love action RPGs and sidescroll adventures but last year GTA Vice City kept me amused for months. I grew up in a neighborhood that was all boys except for me and my next door neighbor, so I think I found my love of videogames there.

*BROAD GENERALIZATION WARNING* I think a lot of ladies won't play videogames because they aren't good right away and they get sick of losing all the time while guys seem to kick ass. I don't care if I'm getting spanked because it's fun to play in the secret world of boy sometimes.

My previous gf loved tetris and especially that dang treasure trolls snes game.

I thought it was all cutsey, and silly till I actually played it, and then I couldn't stop playing it. She got all upset and said give me my treasure trolls back, and I was all like :P

I like girls. They're neato.

My girlfriend likes a pretty wide variety of games. She's especially into RPGs (mostly FFX, X-2 and VIII) and Mario Kart (just picked up Double Dash, and she loves it). Also, we've both just recently became addicted to DDRMAX2 (bought a steel pad and everything).

I understand what you are saying, however, I can also state the opposite. I know plenty of guys who absolutely suck at video games and will not continue to play when they continuously die. I think it's just like any other hobby/obsession, you either like it, or you don't. Fortunately for me, my husband and I both love gaming.

Howdy. Another girl gamer here (although I am hitting 30 in about 4 months. That doesn't mean you can call me "ma'am." Don't make me kick your ass...)

I'll take pics of my "half a room of doom" today for Joe to post since we have the new camera.. No literally- hubby gets half the living room for his stuff, I get the other half plus a chunk of the bedroom. Tight fit for only a fraction of what a lot of folks here have.

I do like puzzle games, card games, brain teasers, etc. as you might guess from my article this month, but previous articles will show that I like stuff like ROTT, which is far from dainty and sweet. ;)

I like a little of everything. Spent hours playing SWG with my brother-in-law last night (and it wasn't hours just because of the lag, the hunts were a lot of fun!), I'm hooked on racing games llike Colin McRae and various F1 games, THPS series, just finally bought Silent Hill 3 from my buddy QOF to add to my other SH and RE type games, I'm a 2D platform, shmups, and fight junkie, and I do crave the Pac-Man and Galaga on a very regular basis. Oh and computer Text adventures. Well, like I said, a little of everything and the above is just a sample of the stuff I play.. :D

I, too, think the number of female gamers is growing, not decreasing. I imagine you'll see more and more over here as time goes on. :)

Well, when I was 12 or so (circa 1987-88), I were into playing anything with my best friend Seb. We played Commando on the 2600. We played Asteroids, Defender and Donkey Kong as well. But we also played on the NES: bionic Commando, Tecmo Bowl, Baseball Stars, the Super Mario and the Zelda series, and countless others that I've all but forgotten now. The point is, we played almost any genre (heck, I knew nothing about football and still enjoyed Tecmo Bowl) and I didn't mind at all.

*is a girl*

Anyways, I've loved playing video games almost as long as I can remember. I was always going over to a neighbor's house or my grandfather's house to play their Atari because we didn't have one. I still remember that Christmas when we opened up the big family gift and there in all its glory was a Nintendo Entertainment System. I was in heaven.

I've never been a big collector - I used to just get games because they sounded fun and passed on some games because I had enough of a backlog of games to play (for which I'm really kicking myself now). I'm still not a big collector, but my boyfriend is, and I really enjoy helping him find the stuff he needs.

I guess I'm stereotypical because my favorite genres are RPGs and puzzle games. I enjoy other genres as well. I used to blame the fact that my boyfriend could kick my butt at Timesplitters 2 and such games because he has played it so much before that he was just better at it than me. So, when we got Halo, I made him promise that he wouldn't play it without me so I would stand a fair chance. He still kicks my butt, so I've conceded that he's just better. We are both very competitive in spirit, so we try to play games like that where we work in co-op instead of trying to beat each other. LOL

Another girl checking in. :)

I started playing video games on the Atari 2600 in 1984. I was 5. I remember constantly playing Pac-Man, Missle Command, Joust, Haunted House, and this other game that I believe was called Vanguard. Anyway, that satisfied me until I saw the glory that was the NES. I begged and begged for one and in 1988 I finally got it. It was set up in the basement (so I could have the TV down there all to myself) and I spent so much time playing NES that my mom would literally bring me down food so I would eat. You could say I was a little fanatical. :D

I like RPG's and puzzle games, but I also enjoy the bloody, gory, scary games too. I love Resident Evil, Silent Hill, GTA, Manhunt, and first person shooters. I like Mario and Zelda and Sonic games. Love all the Metroid games as well. Hell, I just love GAMES!!!

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'll jump in here. I'm a girl (but I don't know how "girly" I am....I like pink....but I'm not a fan of the teen heartthrob [insert name of contemporary guy here])

I love puzzles like BAM and PDP, but I'm not particularly fond of Tetris. Maybe it's because the store I work at, a great portion of the girls scream and giggle over Tetris like it was an idol or something....

Anyhow, I love light gun shooters, RPG, puzzle, survival horror, action/adventure. I'll play nearly anything except for war-sim-strategy and sports.

My darling Carmen has been dutifully laboring through Sphinx: Curse of the Mummy for a few weeks now and is all up in my shizzle to finish Viewtiful Joe so she can play it. Also under her belt for recent gaming triumphs is a conquest Sonic DX with all the characters, and Sonic Heroes. She is becoming a fearsome Beachspikers contender and whips my monkey ass at MonkeyBall.

One of our 'things' is that we have beaten every house of the dead game together while swilling cheap liquor at Dave and Busters. And she routinely spends an hour or two there trying to best that bastard Boba Fett at the Star Wars Trilogy game.

She cannot stand RPG's whereas I am a hopeless RPG fiend. Though she does keep leaning on me to give her my N64 so she can play Wetrix until she dies.

My darling Carmen is a consummate gamer and geek girl, not to mention having a fantastic rack.

Another girl gamer checking in.

I'm an avid collector of video games (over 25 different systems, and over 1200 games!). It's pretty much all I know! But I've taken that useless knowledge, and evolved it into becoming a manager at EB Games.

My first system was the Intellivision. My parents owned it, and I became fascinated with it. Astrosmash, Utopia, Shark Shark, Snafu and Beauty and the Beast were a few of my faves.

My favorite genres are not the typical. (I hate RPGS!) I have a short attention span. I need games that I can play for 1/2 hour, and then walk away from. I like 2D platformers, Shmups, Fighting games, RTS, puzzle games, music games, and 'quirky Japanese' (That's a genre on its own!) Here are my top 10 favorite games so far (In no particular order):

-Rocket knight Adventures (SG)
-Puyo Pop (pick a system..)
-Mark of Kri (PS2)
-Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo (PS1)
-Wario Ware (GBA)
-Majesty Gold (PC)
-Age of Empires 2 (PC)
-Samba de Amigo (DC)
-Pocket Fighter (PS1)
-Castlevania SOTN (PS1)

And in case anyone was wondering, my avatar is Sir. FFuzzy-Logik from the Genesis Puyo Pop clone: Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

WOW! It's great to have finally found a place that has so many female gamers.

I don't usually fall into the 'normal' girl category, however in this case I guess I do. I will play any game but do have a tendency to lean towards puzzles and RPGs. Any game that makes me think I enjoy playing.

Occasionally I play PC, PS2 & Xbox games with my boys but not much. I prefer my NES. My collection is getting so big my hubby (who doesn't play) has decided I need my own room!

oh and Port... you haven't changed a bit! :)

Um, right here.

Right now, I'm favoring shooters, beat 'em ups, and side scrollers. I did dominate the board in my sig at Tetris once, but that was after I got on the top score at Break Out, and wanted a new conquest. I moved on to Tetris, then Pacman, then Space Invaders. I burned myself out on those games, and now I can't make the effort to put myself on the high scores again. It's like eating too much chocolate...after a while, you don't want to be anywhere near it.

Anyway female here. I've been playing games since I was 4 years old when my family bought an Atari. Then that got pitched out the second story window after making contact with a baseball bat and we didn't get another system until I was 6. That was my brother's Nintendo.

My favorite genres are "point and clicks", RPGs, Survival Horror and Puzzel games. Although I'll honestly pick up and play just about anything.

I guess I'll use this post as both my introduction and as a reply to the question. o_O

I'm a female gamers, but there's not much of anything about me that's "typical" as a female gamer or as a woman in general. I suppose my beginnings aren't anything unusual. I got into gaming at the age of 5 (perhaps slightly earlier) with my brother's NES and Donkey Kong tabletop. I watched my brother play more than I actually did. I mostly stuck to Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt back then, but I was much more fascinated with Metroid and Castlevania. I had a couple crappy Tiger handhelds back then too. I remember when I was really young and my family was still going to church, I'd take my Simpsons handheld to play because church bored the hell out of me. One time I accidentally turned the mute off, and the loud beeping "music" of the game echoed through the church, haha.

As for my hobby at this current point in time, I live and breath video games. Virtually every hobby I have is in some way related to video games. Sometimes I even combine them, like listening to a game soundtrack while reading a game-based manga. I'm majoring in computer programming in college, but I believe I have the beginnings of the skills for nearly any career in the industry.

I have 400+ plus games, which includes my future husband's games, but I had the much bigger collection to begin with, despite the fact that he is also very serious about games. Incidentally, I met him because of our common interest in games.

My tastes are far from normal for any gamer, let alone chick gamers. I play pretty much every genre, although I can't get into sports or FPS (more so because of how "American" the games are, rather than them being "manly"). For the last few years, I've played almost nothing but fruity Japanese imports. The weirder the better (I love Choaniki and bizarre dating sims, hehe). My favorite genre will always be platformers (despite the fact that my top favorite games are RPGs), and while I loved some non-Japanese games when I was young (I was obsessed with the DKC series), I just can't get into games lacking that "Japanese" feel anymore. They feel soulless to me. I have no problem playing a Japanese-made game in English, though, and I usually opt to do so if it was released in America. However, I wouldn't touch fan-translated ROMs with a ten-foot pole. I write FAQs on Japanese games and I know a fair amount about translating, so I'm aware just how terribly done most of those fan translations are. Besides, I want to play the actual game on my TV. :P

After all these years, I'm pretty damn jaded, so nowadays I dislike FAR more games than those I do like. I can't stomach shit like GTA: Vice City, any numbered Final Fantasy after 6 (Final Fantasy Tactics kicks ass, though), the neverending stream of ports on Game Boy Advance, and well... nearly every other new game. I like puzzle games okay I suppose, but not any more than any other genre. I can't play Tetris or Pac-Man for more than 5 or 10 minutes without getting bored. I hate traditional RPGs unless they're old-school. The only modern RPGs I get into are ones with really unique battle systems. Last console I was able to get excited about was the N64, which I still love, buy more games for, and import whatever Japan-only titles I can manage to find for it.

So... yeah. My favorite kinds of games are platformers, older titles, and imports (or often combinations of those). Most of my purchases in the last couple years have been NES games and Super Famicom imports, but I've been trying to cut down on game buying. I got a massive backlog of games I've barely touched, and I'm currently using my money to feed my other gaming-related interests - Japanese game comics, soundtracks, and other assorted merchandise.

Another female gamer checking in and about to break the mold....brace yourself....I do not care for Pac-man. Not only that I do not like puzzle games, except Pokemon Puzzle League. Also, I do not like Final Fantasy. I think its the most over rated game series ever. Yes ever. I'm sick of seeing re-used character designs. Anyone notice that Squall, Tidus, and mister FF12 all look so similar?? On a side note, I adore Final Fantasy VII and Tactics (when I say Tactics I mean the original and not the Advanced version....I loathe that childish rubbish.) While I'm at it, I can't stand first person ANYTHING. This includes Golden Eye for the N64. I dislike the GTA and all the mission based shite that has followed suite. I also hate platformers, minus the Jak series.

What do I like? RPGs. Like I stated before, I hate Final Fantasy. I adore however, the Lunar series, Grandia series (minus Xtreme), Wild Arms series, Suikoden (which I consider GOD...hence I imported the Genso Suikogaiden games, numberous artbook, four box sets of the first four card boosters, 3's LE and so on), Xenogears, Tales series, Harvest Moon, Thousand Arms, Star Ocean series, etc. I have almost all the Sony consoles RPGs. I also have an obsession with Full Metal Alchemist, hence I had to break down and get an import PS2, and purchase the GBA game as well. My second favorite genre would have to be "survivor horror"/action/adventure. Games like Resident Evil 2 have me purchasing port after port, as well as the Silent Hill series, Fatal Frame, hell I even like Galerians.

Another recent hit with me has been the King of Fighters games. I've been buying them up left and right. Kensou's my baby. Soul Calibur 2 is another one of my favorites. I should note, I dislike Smash Brothers. Pika pika?

And finally, the most interesting thing I have to add is, I purchased Orphen on the PS2's launch date and enjoyed it....so...technically, I'm not all there and everything I said is not valid :P

However, I wouldn't touch fan-translated ROMs with a ten-foot pole. I write FAQs on Japanese games and I know a fair amount about translating, so I'm aware just how terribly done most of those fan translations are. Besides, I want to play the actual game on my TV. :P

Because as everyone knows a story you can't read at all has got to be better then one that's slightly inaccurate.

... give me a break. Besides you can play them on your tv with a magical little device called a scan convertor. :P

You what's kinda funny though, I think that there are actually more bad official translations then fan translations.

I just wanted to poke my head in here and remind all the ladies introducing themselves in THIS thread, not to forget to do so in the "Introduce Yourself" thread we have stickied in the main gaming forum. Welcome to you all, and I hope to see you hanging around :)

Another die-hard DeJap worshipper, eh?

Since I already said that I write FAQs on Japanese games and know a bit about translating, that should already suggest that I can read some of it on my own. And I can tell you, nothing's a bigger gaming turn off than when you've played the Japanese version of a game, you KNOW what the translation of something is, yet when you play a patch, you see that it's WRONG.

Besides, I'd much rather play a game in its original form without some stupid fan not respecting the original creators by throwing in unnecessary additional or changed garbage and not even knowing the difference... I'd rather use a FAQ by someone I know has a good knowledge of Japanese and respect for the game creators to fill in any story gaps.

Did I mention De-Jap? Actually if I had to name the translators I had the most respect for it would be Ghideon Zhi and Demiforce.

And let me make an assuption of my own... this rant's about ToP isn't it? :P

Some. Not all. Being able to pick out half the words is like settling for the cliff notes of Dante's Inferno over the english version of the novel because you think it's blasphemy that the translater made all the words rhyme. You just don't get the full experience.

And I can tell you, nothing's a bigger gaming turn off than when you've played the Japanese version of a game, you KNOW what the translation of something is, yet when you play a patch, you see that it's WRONG.

I don't know if the script's well written, humerous and the game's still good I don't really see the bid deal. Again it's better then half a story picked out here and there.

I think most of those stupid fans are expressing their utmost respect and admiration for the games and their creators by translating them into english in the first place. I also don't mind if small dialouge changes are made if they improve the flavour of the script and don't change anything pertaining to the plot.

But hey what do I know. I like games translated by Atlus and Working Designs.

ToP is just of the worst out of many, many examples of poorly done fan translations.

The main problem is that most games require a lot of effort to translate, so they're done by teams. Usually the main translator is pretty good and stays true to the plot, but when the other people who don't even know much of any Japanese get their hands on the translated script... all hell breaks loose. I think some of these guys get big egos from all the praise they get, and they think that just because they know how to hack the game they can do whatever they please with it.

One translator who I really respect is Ian Kelley. He's written some amazing FAQs on Japanese games, and he used to do fan translations for some pretty big games. If I'm not mistaken, translating the script for FF4 Hard Type was the last straw for him. Time and time again the other guys in the team would take his work, change and add whatever the heck they wanted (usually swearing and sexual innuendos and other stuff that dumb teenagers like), and then take all the credit for the translation (and these guys are continuing to do this to games to this day). Ian Kelley is the kind of guy that really cares about accurately presenting the game, so that's why he vowed to never do a fan translation again unless he did it all by himself for fun (which he has done with a few small games with not much text, but I don't believe he released them publicly). It's sad really... One of the few respectable fan translators out there was lost due to the corruption among fan translating teams...

By the way, I don't think Working Designs is very good at localizing. They put in TOO much effort. I don't want a bunch of stupid American-style jokes added to my Japanese games. Nor do I constantly want to read references to ABBA, Wheaties, M&Ms, etc. It's gotta make you wonder, what the heck were these characters REALLY saying in the original script?

I never liked ToP but it had nothing to do with the script, I thought some of the sexual comments were silly but they never really bothered me. I hated the plot. It was pretty much being sent into dungeon after dungeon for spirits... and then when you thought you had them all they sent you after more. Ugh... I got bored and quit playing it.

The worst ego I ever encountered was D-boy. But that has more to do with personal experiences then his translation work ethics. He's one of those people who can hold a one sided conversation for an hour while you barely bother to check your AIM. Kinda funny really in a sad antisocial sort of way.

I figured the way this convo was going you wouldn't like them. :P

As for the extra comments most of them are made by townies and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't care what they were saying in the first place. As I said... minor changes. If you're really into the original unchanged scripts then (if you're not already) you should really work on your Japanese. Become fluent, and take full advantage of the games. I'm sure in any lanaguage they're still wonderful. (:

What I do like about WD is the emotion and personality they add to their character. Most noticable in Lunar. Sure it's there in Japanese, but WD has the skill to translate the game and not sacrafice the realism of those people. Lunar Legends is a fun little handheld, but it's dry and fall flat compared to the other versions.

But please... don't trash the fan translators. Not everyone's into literal translations, and everyone who works on translating a Japanese game into english busts their asses to do so (well except langfandood). Yes even the editors you feel take too many liberties with the "humor". I know there are many gems I would never have played if they weren't in english (Clock Tower and Wonder Project J immediately spring to mind), I think by playing them I've broaden my view on the games we do see in America. And of course they're doing this all for free... how can anyone really complain about the quailty of a free translation? :P

Well, anybody who likes Wonder Project J is okay in my book. :P The sequel's better, though (in my opinion, at least), and that's one case where it's really better to just buy the game and play it in Japanese. Not only is there no fan translation for it, but it also runs terribly on emulators. I may not know Japanese fluently, but with what I do know and some translations from a FAQ, I know I'm not missing out on anything.

..and for those very reasons it's one of the few Japanese RPGs I want. I don't know how well I'd be able to play it. But I'd certainly try...

*Pops on in*

Hello! I'm new and I'm a girl!! (As if you couldn't tell by the screen name!)

Been into games since the day my father bought home a NES for me and the little brother. I'm into all the different games out there may they be Shooters, rpg, puzzles but....

I LOVE PUZZLE GAMES!! I'm not sure why. I played Tetris and I fell in love. Favorite puzzle game is Super Puzzle Fighter turbo for PSX. I do like Pac man.

Right now I'm in the middle of finishing FFX and playing Mario Kart Double Dash. I also throw in Samba de Amigo but I just bought the Katana Soul Controller for Onimusha 3. I think I'm gonna have to put FFX aside for just alittle bit.

There are many gamers that are girl, but too bad none live near me. :( I'm stuck with girlz who think video games are "immature" (not to mention my style of clothing as well). I have a lot...well 1 friend who is a gamer and a girl but she lives all the way in South Jerzey. I'm in the North-Eastern region, so if I do meet her, it will be once in a blue moon.

Just visit your local college dorms with Mario Party 4 or 5 and Super monkey ball and you will find many girl gamers.

The parties at the begining of the year we used to play cards and different drinking games, now we start of with Drinking Mario Kart DD, then it switches and we end up playing N64 Dr. Mario and Smash Bros.

just have a party and bust out a 4 player game and ask the girls if they want to play, once one sits down, many more will follow. This usually leads to a man vs. women thing
