Ok, to me, the vintage era of gaming was DOS! Ad lib sound with soundblaster compatibility and touchy hardware settings included. A lot of my favorite games are DOS based, and IMO, some of the best games EVER as well. The notable favorite DOS games I can think of that I STILL have are:
X-Com: UFO Defense
X-Com: Terror From the Deep
System Shock
Star Control 2
Crusader: No Regret (I think that's the first one)
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Wolfenstein 3D
Doom 1 and 2
That's all I can remember now....my PC collection is at my dad's house in Oregon for now. What were your favorite DOS based games?

Actually, Fallout was a Win95 game or it'd be on my list too. It's precursor, Wasteland was released for DOS tho :D I think a few on your list were Windows games.

Damn.. I was so concentrating on NOT mentioning that Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel piece of junk, that I mixed up the titles. I definitely meant Wasteland! :)

Actually, just to let you know, No Remorse was the first one... not that it matters a whole lot, they're about the same, but, just so you know =)
Great games, by the way.
I could duplicate these lists and go "Oo, and this one, and this one, and this one, and this one, and this one..." for hours, but the one that I'm just unable to resist adding is...
The Quest for Glory series. The remake of QfG1, and QfG3 and 4 especially. In my opinion, the greatest adventure games Sierra ever touched.. I found Kings Quest somewhat boring, but QfG is lighter hearted, has combat, has extreme variety between each game in the series (Woodland Forest, Middle Eastish, Africa-like, and Northern European-like... not to mention the craptacular and very late 5th installment that was Greek), and... well, they just rock.
Rock rock rock.
Doom!
Skyroads!
Daggerfall!
Police Quest!
One Must Fall: 2097!
Quest for Glory 2 and 4!

Doom 1 and 2
Wolfenstein 3D
Duke Nukem 3D
and all the other FPS Heretic/Hexen/ROTT/Shadow Warrior/Quake
Blood (alot of fun!)
All the old apogee platformers Keen,Duke
Alone in the Dark (poly survival horror)
Creature Shock was pretty cool looking at the time
7th Guest
Knights of Xentar just for the naughty sillyness
Perfect General 2
Panzer General 2
Ultimas
AD&D Eye of the Beholder series (early Westwood studios, and one of my first game hacks, I wrote a HP editor for them on ol' Borland Turbo c++ for DOS :D)
Command and Conquer
Endorfun (sp?)
Heroes of Might and Magic series
whew....those are the BIG ones that come immediately to mind, but theres a ton more I'm sure

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. The 1st edition, in all its pixelated glory! I need to play through that again....

I'm very surprised that nobody brought up Civilization.
I'd also like to add "Quarantine" to the list.
Under a Killing Moon
Wing Commander 2 and 3
Syndicate
and my personal favorite: Betrayal at Krondor
RetroYoungen

Doom 1 & 2
Chex Quest
I didn't play many games through DOS, so what I've played is quite limited.

I'd have to echo many of the choices, but add perhaps one or two not mentioned above:
XCom: UFO Defense
System Shock
Ultima Underworld 1 & 2
Ultima VII
Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye
Full Throttle
Monkey Island
The Dig
LOOM
Warcraft II (+ Tides of Darkness - and yes, this is a DOS game. My CD specifically says: "MS DOS CDROM")
Command & Conquer
Scorched Earth
Wing Commander series
Quest for Glory series
Legend of Kyrandia series
The Immortal
Master of Orion
Spellcraft: Aspects of Valor
The original SimCity (SimCity 2000 was Windows 95+, I'm afraid, for whoever mentioned it)
Duke Nukem 3D
Commander Keen series
Lemmings
Darkspyre II: The Summoning
Prince of Persia
Civilization (Sid Meier)
Populous
Zork series
and last but not least:
STARGOOSE!
I have a copy of Syndicate but haven't played it yet; it's on my "to do" list.
Other ones that I played on an Apple II, but also came out for DOS and should be strong contenders:
Mines of Titan (Infocom)
Bard's Tale series
I'm sure everyone here is already familiar with http://www.the-underdogs.org - right?

Oh, there was a DOS version of SimCity 2000. Apparently it put major demands on the systems of the time, too. There was also a version of the SimCity 2000 Urban Renewal Kit for DOS.

Oh. Heh most people have no clue what game that is. I also wanted to post Sanitarium (which isn't Harlan Ellison related but I think they're similar) but it's a windows title. Anyway yeah it's a great, dark, point and click too bad I've had issues with the sound lately. The voices were great. :/

I got an old dell pentium 133 laptop just to run my old dos games. The games had a hard time running on a 386/25, but rock on a p133 :)
My entire DOS archive fits on the 2 gig hdd with plenty of room to spare.
The Leisure Suit Larry series was alot of fun until #5 (or was it 6?), when you couldn't die, at all, ever..... stuck his finger in the electrical socket 20+ times. :)
Anyone remember Death Track 2000? A racing game where you had a heavily armored car, object was to come in first place, weather it was speed or oponent elimination. They had a weapon called "the terminator." It was a guided misslle, attached to a skateboard, 98% kill rate.
I'd rather be playing that old stuff then any new ps/2 rehash, that's for sure.

Here's the stuff I played most often on our old Magnavox 286:
Police Quest
King's Quest (I don't recall which one)
SimCity Classic
Street Rod (I've never known anyone else who has it - except the people I made copies for  )
...and the ultimate DOS game?
SCORCHED EARTH!!!
Google it, download it (it's still out there somewhere, I believe) and be amazed. You may have to fiddle with a modern PC's settings to get it to run right (that is, slower), but it's worth the effort. Great as a multiplayer time-killer.
