Hi. I would like to know if your able to use the d pad for all games or do you have to use the stick to get around ? I remember playing some mario game for the n64 and having to use a stick. I couldn’t stand it. Any info would be greatly appreceated .

You HAVE to use the stick for most of the games. In fact, I can't think of a single game off the top of my head where you can use the dpad as a replacement for the joystick. The dpad usually functions to do other things (switch weapons, open submenu, etc.). Analog is the way of the future (and I'm certainly not complaining). Although I do wish the rubber tops of the GCN pads were a little more durable (both of my Nintendo-brand are sort of tearing :/)

Yeah, for example, Metroid Prime, the d-pad switches your visors. To be honest, I do not know why you would want to use the gamecube's d-pad as a primary control. It is by far the worst d-pad of the three current systems.

In Mortal Kombat:DA you use the d-pad to move your fighter around.

You can use it in most all fighting games, but it doesn't make any sense to use a dpad for any 3D game.

I always hated when companies just ignored the D-pad... Nintendo did this all the time on the N64, and I always thought it was extremely annoying (Seems to me that Super Smash Bros would have been easier with the D-pad, yet for some reason, the D-pad does nothing).

Unfortunately, the D-pad on the Gamecube controller kind of sucks anyways. It's the exact same size and shape as the GBA's, which is simply too small for a console in my opinion.... or maybe I just have gorilla hands or something.

The D-pad on the Gamecube controller is very crappy. Playing Zelda 1 with it is an exercise in frustration. Personally, I am going to import the snes-style Hori controller before I get the Mega Man Collection.

If you want a good example of when having the d-pad as your primary form of movement goes wrong, try Mischief Makers on the N64.
(Note to anyone who has it/beaten it: I can't get past the #$&^ olympics level... can't press any buttons fast enough.. help!)

I hate the GCN d-pad because it's so small and awkwardly placed.

Any game I've played for the GCN lets you use the D-Pad the same as the Stick as long as it's not already mapped to something else like inventory or whatnot.

...Which sounds good, 'cause I too prefer to use the D-Pad for any game where analog controlling isn't absolutley nessecary, but it's also true that it's way too small, and placed too near to the middle for real control, it's more geared towards just being a command/inventory type button.

That is teh problem with the Hori SNES controller. I love the thing to death, but its compatible with very few games. I use it all teh time for Wario Ware (Japan) though.

Alot of fighting games use anything.

One way to find out, buy all the games and play them.
