WELCOME

Welcome to the Emulation forum! This is the place to discuss both emulators and emulation! If you've got a question, a comment or a review about any emulator or ROM file, from Atari 2600 to MAME, you've come to the right place! I'm Flack, your friendly neighborhood moderator.

RULES

Let's break down consoles into three eras: Classic (everything up to the PSX), LastGen (PSX/N64/GB/GBC), and NextGen (DC/XBOX/PS2/GCN/GBA).

Classic: Everything goes! This includes requests for ROMs, links to ROMs ... you want it, we got it, or we'll find it!

LastGen: Discussion of emulators for these systems (status, confirguration, help and compatibility issues) is allowed and encouraged. However, please do NOT post links to copyrighted ROMs, ISOs, or BIOSes for these systems. Do not ask forum members where to find such things; those responsible will be sacked.

NextGen: Discussion of NextGen emulators is prohibited. These are systems that are still on the market. Discussion of emulators for Classic or LastGen systems that RUN on NextGen systems however IS allowed (ie: NES emulator for the GCN). Don't bother asking about when NextGen discussions will be allowed; it won't be until LastGen consoles become classic, NextGen consoles become LastGen, and the NextNextGen consoles become NextGen. Confused? Good.

EMULATOR LINKS

This is a list of emulators for specific systems. This is not a complete list by any means. This is a list of one or two known good emulators for systems. If you're not sure where to start, these are a good place. After each one I will also list in parenthesis the system the emulator is for. This list will be continually edited and updated, so check back soon!

This sticky is a consolidation of three former stickies by Zektor (the welcome note, the rules, and an emulator list). Zektor did an awesome job of running the place and I hope to not let he or Joe down.

Enough talking -- let's game!

One thing I didn't make very clear ... if you have any additional emulator suggestions for systems that have worked great for you, just add them to this thread and I'll edit the original one and keep a running list going!

No Neo Geo emulator there, I see...

For Neo Geo, I would recommend Kawaks or Nebula, which are of course good for CPS1 and CPS2 arcade games as well. (I would definitely not recommend using NeoRageX, because it hardly seems like anyone can get the &@!%$# thing to work anymore!)

I also find that Nestopia works very nicely for NES emulation.

Here are some emulators that I utilize meself:

Most arcade games: MAME (Doy!)
Neo Geo: Kawaks/Nebula (Damn skippy Jorpho, I can't get it to function either!) :o
Atari 2600: PC Atari
NES: FCE Ultra
SMS: MEKA
PC Engine: Magic Engine
Genesis: Gens
SNES: ZSNES
Commodore 64: WinVICE (This also emulates several other Commodore systems, but I only ever use the 64 emu)
MSX: fmsx
Amiga: WinUAE (But I don't know how to configure it... I'll probably start another topic on that later)
Game Boy (Regular and Color): BGB
Neo Geo Pocket Color: NeoPop

That's pretty much it... I'm not telling you where to find them, so there. Nyah. :P

Well, I'm pretty sure we're all familiar with www.zophar.net

Got a question that I don't think has been talked about, but I hope it's OK to ask.

What about requests for BIOS, kickstart, or workbench ROMs associated with older computer systems, like Amiga and Acorn? Seems like a blurry topic on most other forums/websites (as to whether their legal or not). So what's the scoop?

You can still buy Amiga Forever (http://www.amigaforever.com), which contains a legal Kickstart ROM that would probably be illegal to distribute.

You can add YAME which emulates the NES, Snes and PC Engine including cd titles.

X68000
WinX68K High Speed(the better of the 2)
XM6

FM Town/FM Town Marty
UNZ

NesterDC could maybe added as well. I don't know if you want a different section for emulators for the Dreamcast?

YAME hasn't been updated for a long time, has it? I'm guessing the SNES emulation probably isn't as advanced as it is in other programs.

I don't know if it's been updated in a while. The old webpage for it has been down for a year or 2 so I have no idea if the person moved there site somewhere else or if it's been discontinued.

As for Snes emulation I only tried a few games and seemed to run okay. It's probably no where near as good as SnesX or Znes or any of the WIP versions. Certainly not bad for a emulator that emulates mutiple systems. A few people have told me the Snes emulation is pretty good but I haven't used it for that too much.

I generally use it for NES and PC Engine games. For NES it emulates some of the Japanese games better than some of the other emulator.

The best part of the emulator is without a doubt the PC Engine cd emulation. It's run a loty of games and even emulates some better than Magic Engine. I generally use it over Magic Engine for cd games unless YAME doesn't play the game. There's only about 15 or 20 I know that YAME can't play. It's also got a speed up/frame skipping which Magic Engine is sorely lacking.
