I din't find any other post like this, so here goes.

In my humble opinion, I think Halo is the best first person shooter ever made. With breathtaking graphics, amazing sound effects(I love that menu music), and great play control, there is no reason why it shouldn't be. My only beef is that the sniper controls are a little awkward, and that the warthog has bad controls.

Now your turn:

Ever play Deus Ex or System Shock 2? Halo is crap compared to those two.

My favorite first person shooter of all time is Ghost Recon. The controls are great, the missions and playfields are awesome, and online play is a blast (and free). Plus, it's one of the few newer ones that don't give me a headache in seconds.

I agree with Deus Ex, but i'd also like to nominate Alien Vs. Predator on the Jag 8-)

i may be the one of the only people that doesn't like halo. i hate all xbox games. i don't like most newgen console gaming to begin with (newgen P.C. Gaming is so-so). anyway, my favorite 3D shooter of all time is Duke Nukem 3D. word...

System Shock 2 is amazing and a long time favorite of mine. I still have to try it again with the High Detail AI Models Mod and the High Resolution Texture Mod.

If I had to cast a vote for best FPS of all time it would go to the original Unreal.
That engine was so beautiful and depite being a little short on story the multiplayer made up for that shortcoming (after it was patched). And those weapons... hells yeah! :)

Half-Life is a close second altho the Quake engine used in HL just doesn't measure up to the Unreal engine of that era.

Even like Goldeneye, and I never play FPSs. It's strange, though. I've never played any Wolfenstien game, yet my brain automatically files all anonymous, uniformed FPS grunts under "Nazis." If it shoots at me and I'm supposed to shoot at it, it's a Nazi. I have no idea why this is.

That is a bit odd, but I have the same sort of condition, except that instead of "Nazi" they're all under "hippie." Go figure. :)

I'd say South Park. Not the most technically sound game, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Any game that has a yellow snowall as a weapon earns top marks in my gradebook.

My favorite FPSs would be the first two Turoks on the 64. South Park as well, since it used the Turok engine. Then Doom and the two Quakes on the 64. Hell, I had the most fun with all of the 64's FPS.

Halo wasn't bad, but IMO was way overrated. Far too repetitious....and that Warthog sucked. Lousy ending to a good game.

I'll have to agree with Halo here. I love alot of FPS's, but Halo is tops for me.

The physics, graphics, sound, and single player campaign are all top notch imo, and immerse you very well. I felt like I was actually on that world fighting aliens "especially on Legendary". Great sense of scope.

Multiplayer though will have to go to Quake 3 Arena with me. Twitch gameplay at its' best. Can you say O\/\//\/t?

People usually look at me with a blank face when I say this, but the only FPS games I've ever gotten into enough to want to go back and play again were the Jumping Flash! games for PSX.

I had a roommate who was a hardcore Quake 3 freak. It was just my luck that I finally bothered to get into the game after he finally burned out.

Can I also give a shout-out to Unreal Tournament? I haven't been able to play the newer versions, because my computer just doesn't have the horsepower. I just really, really dug that game, if only because you could fire six missiles at once. It was the only FPS I could think of that came close to the old-skool thrills of Contra and Gunstar Heroes. And, of course, the level designs were terrific.

And how about Doom? There's still a certain rush that only seems to come from Doom and has never been repeated since. No doubt a lot of that comes from the fact that computers still can't render a room-full of polygon characters without choking horribly. I miss the old days of just being overwhelmed. Gauntlet, anyone?

Finally, I have to give my special Funkadelic shout-out to Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast. Roadblaster deathmatch, four-lpayer chaos, perfectly balanced weapons, arenas that are just the right size, customizable hubcaps (hey, this one's important), crazy killing stunts. Man, I really want my old Dreamcast back.

Halo is shit compared to some PC gems

my suggestions:

Quake (PC)
Half-Life (PC)
Duke Nukem 3D (PC)
Dark Forces (PC)
Goldeneye (N64)

System Shock would be in here if it was a real ego-shooter, same goes for Terra Nova

But Halo rules all! :D

I don't understand why people love Halo so much. I paid $17 new for it, and thought that it was still way too much. It was very bland to me, and ranks among the poorest FPS ever.

I never played any of they Deus Ex games, but here is my take:

Best story: toss up between Perfect Dark and Red Faction

Best control: Timesplitters 2 (Finally, a FPS that can almost keep up with my thought processes!)

Best side missions: Perfect Dark. Everything from the shooting gallery from the challenges kicked ass.

Best Multiplayer: Perfect Dark or Timesplitters 2. Co-op rules, excellent multiplayer modes.

Best Maps: Goldeneye! I miss playing levels like the Stack, Complex or Temple in the newer games.

Hydrox, get out of my head. I was thinking about all of those including Duke 3d.

UT
UT2k3
UT2k4 (the demo kicks ass)
Battlefield 1942 (I can't wait for Vietnam)
Doom 2
Duke 3D
Rise of the Triad
Goldeneye

Halo is probably the most overrated game in the history of gaming.

Turok 2 looked plain amazing on the 64, too bad it was so darn slow and the levels, well, sucked. Some folks like Quake on that system better than the PC version, which is quite interesting.

Halo was indeed overrated, but there's some fun bits to be had in there. Goldeneye still manages to beat it soundly when one considers the time and, well, the fact that folks are still talking about it and still like playing it (though I must admit I didn't play it for long last time I plugged it in...ack, it's getting dated).

System Shock 2 is still one of my favorite FPS titles. The original DOOM, Heretic, and Quake are my favorite straight FPSes in terms of singleplayer fun, and on the multiplayer side a good CS server is one of life's guilty pleasures (when the thing's up, as anybody who tried to get on yesterday will note ;)

Duke 3D still has some good left in it, as does Rise of the Triad, though the shareware has better levels than the final version...not to mention the final bug :(

Unreal seems to be making a comeback as well...UT2K4 looks like a thing of pure joy. I never thought we'd see a time when a company could rev their FPS each year, but there you have it.

I also would like very much to play Raven's ShadowCaster and the original Unreal.

Finally, America's Army is a fantastic game in many respects, but some godawful aiming makes playing the game far too annoying. I wouldn't call it a "chore," and the sniper weapons are about as fun and as challenging to use as in other games, but there's really no reason to drive players away with the godawful accuracy of the M16. I was behind a set of stairs and tried to ambush a guy coming down...nope, I failed to tag him three times with the MILES system. You'd expect better shooting at point blank range with the burst on, eh? In this case "realism" means handicapping the player so far as to make the game less playable or enjoyable, which sucks. The tripod is another good idea, but there needs to be a way to move a gun with the tripod out past its intended arc and to redeploy (or even get away) really quickly with it.

This is one area where (I believe) PC's have really been head and shoulders above Consoles until recently. I mean when Wolfenstein and Doom were out on the PC, most console gamers didn't even know what an FPS was unless they had a PC at this point. And as Goldeneye was coming out on the N64, Duke 3D (a classic), and Quake, a "true 3d" totally revolutionary breakthrough of a game were both out on the PC. and Goldeneye... well, you couldn't even jump. and it was a pain if you wanted to look around. so being a PC gamer mostly at that point Goldeneye just didn't do anything for me at all.

now if you set aside all this technological achievement mumbo jumbo, and just look at things from a gameplay perspective, one of the greatest FPS ever made would without a doubt have to be Half-Life. Duke 3d had alot of character in that area as well, but Half-Life just took it to a whole nother level.

of course, now with games such as Halo and Metroid Prime consoles are finally catching up to PC's in the FPS genre. but for me FPS games will always been more fun to play on a PC with the classic Keyboard & Mouse combo. I have to admit though that I haven't played any recently made PC FPS, they all seem to be just a bunch of Multiplayer deathmatching Fragfests. But I am looking forward to Half-Life 2 and Doom 3.

oh, and Wolfenstein 3D was by no means "the first one" except perhaps maybe in terms of the first widely received First Person Shooter. this is even true if you're just looking at the company that made it, id software, which is the same company that made Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2 Quake 3 and soon Doom 3. a looong time ago before I ever had Wolfenstein 3D I used to own this game by them called Catacombs 3D, the game was in 16 colors(opposed to Wolf3D's 256) and came on one of those huge floppy(literally) disks. you played this sorceror who went around slinging fireballs and such at all sorts of fantasy creatures, it was a fun little game. sort of like a precursor to Heretic i guess you could say.

well anyways, thems my two cents

I just got back into Deus Ex (PS2) after a long break & love the open-endedness of it. I'm not a big stealth game fan, but there's something cool about sneaking around those guards & security bots!

Others of note:
Alien vs. Predator (Jag)
Doom (Jag)
Star Wars Dark Forces (PS)
Hexen (PS)
Unreal Tournament (PS2)
Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter (PS2)

I think you bring up a good point. Personally I don't enjoy FPS on consoles. The PC has better control and graphics. while I think consoles have improved tremedously they stii don't have the Power to match at 2.5ghz+ Radeon Pro Graphics driven computer (or equivelent). If you like Halo for the Xbox you be amazed at how much better it looks at higher resolution on a PC. Until console gaming goes HDTV I don't see how it will ever catch up with the PC. The resolution is just not there. Same goes for the control scheme a Joystick will never beat the simple mouse/keyboard combo! This is my opinion I could be wrong.

And on that note the NO ONE LIVES FOREVER series would be my favorite. On a console Perfect Dark was pretty good because the Bots were fairly smart.
