It seems like every company wants to get in the video game business. :hmm:

Starting to feel like 1983 around here. Three consoles and three handhelds currently out. This thing makes 3 or 4 consoles and 3 handhelds announced. If the announced machines are released, there could be 7 consoles and 6 handhelds all competing for the same pie. Not pretty.

Scientific-Atlanta? Who are these guys?

At least we'll have a hard fought battle between Infinium, Apex, and S-A to see who will go tits-up first. At least Apex has a business to fall back on when they exit the video game industry.

PS - In the future, please use BBCode (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/faq.php?mode=bbcode#8) to make small links that don't destroy the page format. Sorry, this is just a pet peeve of mine.

"We have a partner we are working with who has 250 engineers in Europe writing software for the Explorer platform for games,"

Oh, wow! Watch out for those powerful European developers. LOL

I'd like to try playing a big meaty German RPG on my TV for some reason.

I think I should add this comment to that: Rawr!

Dunno why, seemed appropriate :D

Scientific-Atlanta made my old cable box, and I presume a lot of other people's as well.

Of all three of those companies listed, I think Apex has the best chance of making it. People already associate them with cheap hardware. I know a lot of people's moms and grandmas who didn't own a DVD player when they were $300 but have an Apex player now. I can see a lot of families with older computers buying cheap Apex game players because either their computer won't play newer games, they've had bad experiences installing newer games, or they simply don't own a computer.

The worst scenario is that S-A will actually get into the business, because they have very close ties with cable companies and I could see the signs of a monopoly falling into place.

Don't forget that in the late 60's Baer tried to sell his 'video game' idea to several major cable companies of the time....the wheel is coming full circle again. :)

Every one is making systems and handhelds. But Nintendo, Xbox, and Sony will be the only ones making real money.
THe otherones fail and will never make it, it's great!

Ah, nice stuff. Even I know of Project Gotham Racing, so they're somebody, that's for sure.

so does this mean that everything is going to shoot down in price in order to compete with each other?

Because I want an N-Gage, but I'm not about to dish out 200 for it. And S-A did make cable boxes. The cable box I have is made from that company. and Apex, man, hurray, cheap consoles and cheap games. That is what everybody wants.

Funny, people complain about the industry being dominated by this company or that and then any time an outsider announces they're having a go at entering the market, people laugh and proclaim them a failure before they even put anything on the shelves.

Things that make you go hmmmmmmm...

Scientific-Atlanta I actually located where I live. When I saw this story the first thing I thought was "They must have put this out to cover up some layoffs". I swear the only time you see these guys in the news is when it followed by X many people will lose there jobs. I would not worry too much about this project ever seeing the light of day. I do know some people that work there so I will see what I can find out

so... for handhelds there will be PSP, GBA, GBA SP, GB DS, N-Gage, Zodiak.

and consoles there's PS2, GC, Xbox, Phantom, ApeXtreme, this new thing....i'm guessing there are probably several others.

hopefully ONE of these newer consoles will actually be good... (if it requires downloading games it wont be good)

This crap wont sell, I dont see peple going out and supporting a game machine in which you dont have the product in hand....Considering you can download games for free(even though they are older games). Both this and the Phantom wont do great, and although I will be conservative and say that there isnt a crash coming....there is a game recession coming and its not going to be pretty.
