I was wondering who the NES real opposition was. we know the SMS, 7800 and the TG16 had no chance. so not counting the Gen. who was the NES's best compition in north america.

There wasnt any, because the TG-16 came out in 89, the same year as the Genny. There is a reason beyond the fact that the Nes made killler games....ther game market at the time was all but beat to heck by the crash of 83-84...I think it is safe to say the the Nes fixed that...

While the nes may have had a small amount of competition from the Atari 2600/5200/7800, Commodore 64 and Sega Master System; I would say that they really didn't have any substancial competition. Nintendo pretty much ruled the market at the time, and it's surprising to see how many good games they put out without any threatening competition. I doubt Sony would do the same if they didn't have any competition (not that it seems they are trying that hard right now). What else can I say, Nintendo is a company that knows good games.

When did Intellivision come out? Supposedly, it lasted until '92. :-P

Around here, the only thing close to competition that the NES had was the C64 and the SMS... the C64 was sort of a different market though, so any competition was somewhat indirect... and the SMS was always a very distant 2nd place and quickly died when the Genesis and TG-16 showed up.

I thought the only thing that was putting any good challange to the NES was the IBM PC being that there were so many clones of them on the market.

True the IBM PC did provide a very small amount of competition to the NES, but there just wasn't any REAL competition. At the time of the NES it was more common to see homes without computers than with. Not to mention, if the family could afford a computer at the time then they probably didn't mind shelling out a little more for the NES.

SMS was no real competition and the c64 catered to a different crowd. I would say the Genesis was the only real competition as 1990 was NES's greatest year and the Genesis really started to pick up steam in the Christmas season of '90.

The NES had complete control of the vg market when it was out. My cousin had a sms, but had to sell it to one of his friends. He couldnt find any games.

yeah, come to think of it i *NEVER* saw any sms games for sale in any stores whatsoever...at the time. everybody knew of it, thought it had "better graphics" but nobody really had one. i was about 8-12 yrs. at this time.
a friend of mine had a pc and we would play games on it, but the pc had no hard drive and had to boot dos with a 5 1/4" floppy. it seemed so complicated at the time lol. boot, dir, find exe, run...wow what a genius he was (it seemed).
