When it comes to games being dated, and being virutally unplayable anymore, is anything more dated then the first polygon sports games?

I mean playing the first polygon Maddens and NBA Live's and Triple Play's, they are just freaking so unplayable. They look horrendus. No matter the gameplay, I just can't get myself to play these games.

The old sprite based sports games on the other hand are very playable to me, and they have aged relatively well.

But the first polygon sports games????

HORRIDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yet in your signature you list Madden '93 as your favorite game of all time

Yet you fail to realize that Madden '93 is on Genesis, which is also mentioned in his signature. x_x

The early 90's EA basketball games (Bulls Vs. Blazers, etc). Those games are slow. They were innovative for their time, but way too dated now.

AMEN TO THAT! That game is unplayable. The Saturn version (or sequel, or whatever it is) is also pure crap.

Race Drivin' plus Hard Drivin' equals 1/16 of Genny Virtua Racing.

Yeah. I'm really just talking about the first "polygon based" sports games. When they first started to make sports games with Polygons on the N64, PSX and Saturn. At the time they probably seemed pretty revolutionary, but looking back on them now, they just look absolutely archaic.

As for the early E.A. Sports basketball games, like Lakers vs. Celtics and stuff like that, yeah, those games really weren't that good. They did seem pretty amazing when they first came out, but all you had to do was hit that button when they were in the paint, and then they would do their automatic move that you really didn't have any control over.

E.A. really didn't change that till NBA Live 95 on the SNES in 1994. By the way, I feel that NBA Live 95 on the SNES, was one of the best basketball games of all time.

NBA Live 95 was pretty good. My favorite of the NBA Live series was '96 on SNES. I like the gameplay and all the crazy trading I can do is nice too, I guess. The oinly thing that bugs me is that for some reason, most of the time the best player on the other team will be the starting point guard.

And yeah, I agree that the early polygon based games have not stood the test of time. My brother still has NFL Quarterback Club '98 for the N64. I never played it, but I heard it was one of the better ones. Definitely some archaic graphics there.

The first of the Madden games on N64 (just called Madden 64) was one of the early polygon sports games. It is pretty much unplayable, plus it isn't endorsed by the NFL so there are no official teams. O_O

I agree about the early era PSOne games as well. I too am surprised that 3D took off like it did, considering the poor quality of almost all the first truly 3D games which used polygons in place of good old sprites. For horrible pop-up and glitchy controls, look no further than Jupiter Strike. It is so glitchy I don't believe I've ever cared to even finish the first level.

Shhh...I have for PSone now:

NBA LIVE 2003
NHL 2001
TRIPLE PLAY BASEBALL (2002)
NASCAR THUNDER 2004
MADDEN NFL 2004

All good. All playable. However, problems arose (and means I have to buy more). Like the NHL series in the 16-bit days, I HAD to have '95 as that was the year when the Canucks were in the S.C. Finals. Similar to this, I had to pick up NASCAR 2001 for the sole reason that it was based on the last season that my favorite driver used the Valvoline car, and also the last full season that Dale Earnhardt was alive. I have no idea if he's in the '02 game considering he died in the opening race of that year, but still...what's a NASCAR game w/o Dale? Not even a fan, but he has to be there...just for the fact that I USED to watch NASCAR a lot and I want everything to be like old. Hence I might pick up a third NASCAR game, being '98 and if that doesn't suck (the 2001 and 2004 have the same game engine, which I like) I will keep it. I have played the "Stormfront Studios" version for the N64 and that sucked...so thankfully that is not the same as '98. Also tempted to buy NHL 98 because I'm curious. Have not followed the NBA in nearly ten years, so that one game will do. I want Triple Play 97 now that I found out it is 2-D. :D

I have not yet bought early 3D sport titles, but I am sure I will run across some that are terrible.

I highly suggest getting NBA Live 96 and Triple Play 97 for the PS1. Both of these games used sprites instead of polygons, over a 3D stadium and arena backdrops. Absolutely awesome early PS1 sports games, one year before the switch to Polygons. Madden 97 and Madden 98 on the PS1 are also pretty good early sprite based sports games on the PS1 to check out too. These two games are the last E.A. sprite based football games. All of these games, because they are old sports games, can be had for pretty cheap too. Although NBA Live 96 and Triple Play 97 are getting harder and harder to find.

By the way, both Madden 97 and Madden 98 on the PSX are $1.99 at GameCrazy.

Thanks on the tip for NBA LIVE '96! I thought that was a 3D game also. :)
