I just recently bought the Sailor Moon game from Japan for the sega megadrive. Anyway I have the american original Sega Genesis model 1 16-bit system. And when I put the game in it said it only play for American games. I was told I could use a game genie, but then someone else told me not too cause it wont work. So, is there any wiring I could do to make the game play? I would appretiate it if someone could help me out! This Sailor Moon game needs to be played @_@

:hmm: kind of hard to say. you REALLY need something called a mega key, which is a converter cart with dip switches that enable you to play almost any mega drive game from any region on a sega genesis. i say ALMOST, because some early releases won't work unless you have a japanese mega drive.

if you have a game genie, try it and see- it WON'T hurt the cart at all. check online for any codes that may get it to work- i don't think there are any, but that's what google (or some other search engine) is for... :D

oh yah- when you finally DO get to play that sm game, try not to be too disappointed...

the game genie does have codes for certain MD games with lockout to work, I know the japanese Castlevania Bloodlines has unlock codes.

There is also an Import forum here that's rather busy that you can find tons of info on stuff of this nature.

Oh, and welcome to the boards if no one else has done so.

There's a dead simple mod you can do that will let you play ALL Genesis/Megadrive games on one console.
You can add a switch to select between English/Japanese text, and another to switch from 50/60Hz, though you'll only need the second switch if you're planning on playing PAL imports aswell.

There's a very detailed guide on the Gamefaqs Genesis hardware page:

nice tip- just remember, not everyone likes or wants to mod a console, no matter how "easy" it is. opening up a case and adding switches is baffling to some folks.

i remember when the first dreamcast mod (the wire and clock clip trick) came around- i was working in a game shop when the info was posted online as "simple to do", and we had DOZENS of people coming in or calling us asking if repaired systems,
