I got Faselei! for the Neo Geo Pocket Color and it is just great! Now, it got me thinking about other mech sims I could try. The first one I have in mind is Front Mission 3 (that I am looking for) for the PSX. What other mech sims would you recommend?? I have a Saturn, PSX, DC and XBox... could be import or domestic (but has to be a bit english-friendly :) )

Thanks for your help!

Let me start off by saying I prefer action games to strategy games...

Anyway, Phantom Crash for Xbox is really fun. Some have called it the Gran Turismo of mech games because of all the customizing you can do, and it has a very Japanese flavor. Xbox is probably the best system for mech games right now with Mechassault and Steel Battalion leading the charge. Also, I own Murakumo, but I wouldn't recommend it because there isn't much game there. I don't own Steel Battalion yet, but maybe if I hit the lotto... LOL

As far as Dreamcast, I'd say Gundam Side Story 0079, but I found it to be slow. Tech Romancer is a mech fighting game for that system made by Capcom. I've heard a lot of good things about the import game Frame Gride, but I couldn't tell you much.

I own Iron Soldier 3 and Omega Boost for PS1. Both are very good, but everyone else here will probably suggest the Armored Core series as the best place to start.

The Saturn owners will probably recommend Gungriffon. I'd recommend Gungriffon Blaze and Zone of the Enders 2 for you if you owned a PS2.

Don't forget the once king of mech games, Virtual On. The Dreamcast incarnation is particularly fun - especially if you ahve the twinsticks, or even the Saturn twinsticks + converter. The controller setup isn't as fun, but it suffices.

If you own a PC Mechwarrior 4 and Heavy Gear 2 (although this one is a bit old) are great games. Though not Japanesey mechy (i.e. fast and most likely physically impossible).

I second on Gungriffon Blaze. As well as Armoured Core. Tech Romancer, though it uses Mechs - isn't really like a Mech game...its a fighting game, completely different gameplay - but if that is your thing, try Cyberbots for the Saturn. Mech, but 2D fighting.

Also in the "related" category of mech games - there's Assault Suit Leynos II for the Saturn, which is a sidescrolling mech game - completely awesome, very difficult. Furthermore, I'd give Robot Alchemic Drive a try for the PS2. Very untraditional gameplay: you play from the perspective of the person controlling the mech via remote control - you don't feel like you're inside the mech, but you get an incredible sense of size and gravity from watching the mech's duke it out.

And in my personal opinion, Mech Assault for the XBox is not good. That's just me though.

Just to look at this pic gives me the urge to run out and get one.!! :) Oh well...

I see most people seems to prefer action mech games to strategy games. However, are there any good ones out there that are worth looking for?

Just what I was about to say, Cmosfm. :P

I just got the re-release of Steel Battalion last week (and Line Of Contact) and I can't say enough good things about it. I'm not really a fan of mech games either but I thought I'd take a chance on it. I'm glad I did. It's very difficult (I'm STILL stuck on Mission 4), but it's soooo fun to play.

get a joystick. it really adds to the overall feel for these kind of games.
unless you're getting SB of course ;)

I'll suggest Assualt Suit Leynos 2 for the Saturn (very high on my want list) and Mechwarrior 2 (PC-PSX-Saturn-Mac). ASL2 is an old school 2D shooter like Cybernator(SNES) and Metal Warriors(SNES) and MW2 is the grandaddy of Mech action.

I've also read enough about Omega Boost to have an interest in that one myself.

The only console video game I am playing these days is Steel Battalion: Line of Contact. So that would be my first recommendation.

You might also check out the Armored Core series of games for the Playstation. There were three PSX releases (AC, AC: Project Phantasma, and AC: Master of Arena). The hook in Armored Core is that you design your core (mech) from the ground up, selecting from a wide array of parts in several categories. As a result, there are thousands of possible combinations, allowing a number of play styles. Each of the games allows two player vs. play. Some call it the Gran Turismo of mech games, due to the customization possibilities. I wouldn't know, because I don't play racing games, but there it is.

If you like the games, you can continue the series if you get a PS2, which has Armored Core 2, AC: Another Age, and AC 3.

Nobody has mentioned Front Mission 3 yet, so let me say it IS worth the money the game goes for. GREAT GAME! Can't wait for 4 to come over here in the States. You can also play the original FM translated ROM for the SNES.
