Mod or not, you can't beat Zektor to the MAME updates. :)

I can't keep up with them personally, but like to keep up with them and at least see what's new in each version.

Ehh, it's really hard now for me to keep up on anything, but if I see an update here and there that isn't already posted, I'll let you folks know :)

Are you using alt.binaries.emulators.mame or alt.binaries.emulator.misc? I see BIOS but not 100 updated ROMs.

The roms have been uploaded to the groups throughout the past few weeks. The thing is that there were 4 unofficial Mame releases since 0.79 (0.79u1 - 0.79u4) and games were added and changed through all of those versions. The latest Mame reflects all of those changes. Best bet to get a full romset in the future is to just download all the new and changed roms that come up every other day/week, leave them in the download folder, then do your clrmame rebuild using that folder when the public release appears. This way you don't have the worry of hunting down all of these roms. I had a full set for Mame 0.80 about 5 minutes after I downloaded it :)

a.b.e.mame. There was a flood called ".79 to .80 upgrade". Here's the list:

Do you guys actually keep up with all the MAME releases? Most of the new ones don't really do anything I need (I'm certainly not going to be able to play Driver's Edge, Radikal Bikers, or any of the other new games on my K6), so I usually wait a while between releases. Still using 0.78 at the moment.

The Namco update sounds interesting though.

I stay current, just for the simple fact that the longer you wait, the harder it is the find the roms you need. This way, 10 releases from now when I buy a faster machine, I don't have to hunt for roms to check out the stuff that was too slow on the old machine.

Ditto. I totally stay on top of it. And you're right - a PC upgrade or a fix to the emulation itself and games that used to work like slide shows are suddenly playable. Sega's Rad Mobile comes to mind as a recent example.

I am going to try and stay on top of it a little more for three reasons. One, I'm now moderating this forum. Two, I'm running the MAME Club. And three, I now have a MAME cabinet that I want to keep up to date!

Make sure you guys are changing the FTP port from 21 to 9001. You can do that by either putting in the address as 68.12.156.214:9001, or your FTP software may have a separate area for putting in the port.

I just tested it from two different off site locations and it's working fine.

just looking through the list, I'm a bit shocked. They just now got to metal slug 1, SamSho 3...? Last Blade? I thought all these were already emulated since KoF 2003 took about three weeks. Or does Mame have a sort of 'wait' period for games that come out to prevent stealing money from arcades?

That said, an interesting update for certain but I think the last time I really used mame it was back in .64 lol

Metal Slug 1 wasn't added, it's been there for years now, but a lot of the neo geo rom sets just changed in this release. MAME does have a wait period, but it's either 1 or 2 years, I forget which. I'm pretty confident Metal Slug is even in the .64 version you mentioned.

They're doing 2 years now. I hope they don't keep increasing that number. Soon it'll be 25 years and all MAME will play is Pong. That'll solve any compatibility issues ...

ddockery

No, then it woudn't do anthing because Pong can only be simultaed and not emulated...

zektor
03-11-2004, 07:39 PM
On an off note, there was a version of Mame not too long ago that came pre-compiled with a Pong simulation. It was pretty cool but was canned since it wasn't really an "emulated" game.

3 years is a better way to think of it now. Last year it was decided that to clear up the confusion on what a year based rule would mean (since the release date of a game is rarely known), games wouldn't be added until the end of the year that they reach the age required by the year based rule. For example, a game released in 2000 wouldn't be considered for inclusion until Jan 1 2003, whether that meant it was 2 years old or 2 years 364 days old. I use a past example since the 2001 games are another story...

More recently, due to the whining caused when the 3 year rule was followed and the 2001 games removed a few releases ago, the rule is only somewhat jokingly considered 3 years + a few months everytime somebody asks when the 2001 games are going to be added. Sadly this appears to be the result of several of the main MAME contributors (especially David Haywood now that he is the maintainer) going through the typical emu developer burnout when they tire of the sc3n3 and the romz kiddiez and lamerz acting all l33t and pestering them for stuff. Instead of following the previously understood guidelines (though obviously never "rules") and shutting up the whiners, they prefer to antagonize the whiners and change the "rules". Though I don't particularly care if the 2001 games are included (not like I have a legal claim to the roms anyways), I find rather annoying when a supposedly mostly open source project is shown to be a closed source project controlled by an oligarchy who acts upon their whims - see the initation of the "U" releases this past year as an example (supposedly done to increase testing of changes, but conveniently timed to sneak in some Dragon Ball Z games under the radar of the romz kiddiez that had been whining about them).

But getting off my soapbox and moving beyond the year based rule, there are other factors that come into play. MAME won't include games if they are still earning significant money in arcades (don't want to tick off the few remaining manufacturers), such as most of the Golden Tee games and the DDR games. MAME won't include games where the emulation of a game on that platform would make it trivial to enable the emulation of other games on that platform that aren't old enough or are still making money (again, Golden Tee and DDR fall into this category - NeoGeo is a touchy one...). There's a general tendency to be reluctant to include anything that can draw the wrong type of attention to the project, like the Simpsons bowling game might. Other than a few oddball cases here and there (Rapid Fire not being included at Hanaho's request; the Rock'n Tread games not being included due to the ROM dumps not really being dumps but binary files straight from the developer), I think that about covers the "rules" about including games in MAME.

Wow, thanks for the information! When I hear people complaining about the newer games being dropped from MAME I always think ... wow, have they already beaten the 4000+ games it DOES support? I probably wouldn't know any 2001 or newer arcade games anyway. Everytime I fire up MAME, the last game played is usually Yie-Ar Kung-Fu, Excitebike, or something like that. I cherish pre-1985 a lot more than post 2001 games.

What's the deal w/ the Simpsons bowling game? I haven't heard about that one?

As of early January it was ready to go with the exception of hooking up the controls. Due to WIP postings leading up to that point there had been a bunch of whining about it, lots of questions about when it was going to be included were being asked, annoying the driver developer. Then seeing how the questions weren't necessarily being asked by the everyday romz kiddiez but perhaps by more Simpsons fanboys (like was the case with the DBZ games), there seemed to be some fear that including the game may bring in a new user base that wouldn't know to keep things fairly quiet to avoid legal attention. Add in the fact that this was a Fox property and they are known to go after smaller things than this, and the result is that not much has been said about the game this year. If the game didn't have a Simpsons license I'm certain it would have been included by now, but the Simpsons name appears to have scared the MAME powers that be. I don't believe that anybody has explicitly said that the above is the reason the game has been left out, but reading between the lines of MAMEDEV posts about the game you can see it - adding this game might bring in the wrong crowd.

(And yes, there is already the old Simpsons game in MAME, so it isn't just the license that causes the problem, but the publicity that comes with adding a game)
