Heh, I *killed* myself with my oh-so-clever headline!
Don't forget gang, UPN's new videogame-cartoon-sitcom - "Game Over" - airs this Wednesday at 8 p.m. THere were 6 episodes made, but there's no guarantee that they'll all air. Set your VCRs for this one. There could be a 2 episode-then-yanked airing (ala Clerks toon and God, The Devil, and Bob).

To answer the question the tagline is from Aliens. Or so I think.

But that would be telling! Here's a clue: The line was said by BILL PAXTON playing PVT. HUDSON in a MOVIE directed by JAMES CAMERON.
"In case you haven't been paying attention to current events, we just got our asses kicked, pal!"
Yup, it's "Titanic." :D

Time for me to get the trivia point!
The other UPN Video Game show wasn't really a show based onvideo games, but was sinbad's sitcom. He was a game programmer. I've never even seen a show of it.

I know I've said this before (see if anybody remembers?) but...
Can any of you tell me the name of the game (I only know of one) that has a sound clip of "Game over, man, GAME OVER!" from Aliens in the demo version (not sure about full)? Hint: it's a SCHMUP ;)

Thanks to both of you. It's been years since I've seen that movie -- I'll buy the DVD pack when the price comes down.
And yeah, I'll check out the show. Should be interesting, at least. :)

I think you're talking about UPN's Deadly Games, which was from the network's second season on the air (late '95-early '96) - still the best year they ever had for actual programming, what with Nowhere Man and Voyager not having descended into full suck mode yet. It wasn't really a video game thing so much as it was virtual reality, and I believe the producers once said they were going for the Adam West-era Batman vibe, with kooky production values, bright primary colors, and big-name guest stars (which at the time included the just-fresh-from-Star-Trek Levar Burton and Brent Spiner - I think I still have Spiner's episode on tape somewhere, as a matter of fact).
Hopefully that refreshes everyone's memory. :D

Huh. Earl, your link is all messed up. I'll drop in with an assist. Tiny URL to the rescue!

Hope that works.
Show airs tonight kids. Let's discuss it tomorrow. Even if it DOES suck, it's a videogame show in primetime - which is a rarity. I plan to support it in hopes that it - or others like it - continues.
BTW: The premiere episode already had some "censoring/tweaking" done to it. The bare-ass shot mentioned in the article was censored out, and Artie Lange - the voice of "Turbo" - said on the Stern Show that he had to go in yesterday for some last-minute overdubs for questionable dialogue. The phrases "busting balls" and "numbnuts" were both changed. Thank you once again Janet Jackson.

I found it rather bland and the attempts at humour extremely half witted. Other than the few subtle gaming parodies, the show sucked.
I say its game over for Game Over.

It's on in two hours here. After I finish watching Kill a Mockingbird in a moment (for a school project) I'll watch this.
I'm probably going to hate it, but y'know, me and television. :embarrassed:

Hmmm...OK, I laughed at loud at points, enjoyed the references only folks like us would get, and groaned at the rest.
Main problem I had with it: They were trying to cram too many storylines into a half hour. I won't ruin it for those who haven't seen it yet, but every character had their own unresolved storyline. Nothing was resolved for ANYONE at the end of 30 minutes. Plus, we had to introduce all the members of the family, their new pet, the neighbors, the "world" they live in, etc. Too, too much going on.
If future episodes were to stick with one typical sitcommy storyline (instead of the 1...2...3...4....5...6!!! I counted tonight), it might be a bit more focussed and not so scattershot. I think the premise is cool enough and the cameos and references were fun. But I got a headache going "Where did THIS plotline come from?" I'll watch next week. But if I have another headache, I'm done with it.

The only brief segments I found funny were the Abe cameo and the ninja taking the shuriken to the gut. I still can't figure out why the kids are on the show since they have nothing to do with any video games.

Well did everybody get to see it? I thought it was ok...not a Simpsons, Futurama, or Family Guy. It shows potential but can it compete against Smallville? I think it will also need a stronger following show. Quite frankly the Mullets is pretty weak.
Did anyone catch Tripping the Rift on Sci Fi? What did you think?

The show definetly has potential. There was too much goin on in this episode to really judge. If they can just stick to a basic premise through each show and not cram so much in as Sniderman stated I think it could be very good. I found the Vice City joke very stupid though, they tried a little to hard there. Hopefully if it catches on they wont limit themselves to the newer games, i was kind of hoping to see an old age home with some old school early 80's characters.

Second episode - much better. One clear throughline through the whole story, and even a bit of fun to point up just how cheesy some viewers might feel said theme really is.
And I howled when Frogger showed up and said "Damn, he's good!" as the kid crossed the street. LOL LOL LOL
Sniderman
03-17-2004, 09:58 PM
Now THAT was what the pilot should've been! Second episode was SOOOO much better. The main storyline of the husband jealous of the wife's successes was typical sitcom buffoonery, but quite amusing in the videogame world. And the daughter trying to show the DOA volleyball chicks how to stop being mere sex objects was damn funny too.
And let's see:
TROPHY SHOP OWNER: We gots all kinds of trophies. For baseball, golf, Space Invading....
RAQUEL: THe Uranium Monkey's been missing since the days of Pitfall HArry.
FROGGER: (watching the kid leap through traffic) Damn, the kid's good!
And finally, the Uranium Monkey was statue of a gorilla. Holding a barrel over its head. :D
The vidgame refs were subtle, but there for the stalwarts. And the storyline was just a lot easier to follow and enjoy. Good stuff this week. Hope a lot of you didn't bail after last week's miserable premiere, as you missed out on what the show's potential truly is.

Things aren't looking good for GAME OVER. Along with its follow-up, The Mullets, it has performed so poorly that UPN is moving it to Friday nights immediately - as in this week - and doubling up on Wednesday airings of Star Trek: Enterprise.
Ah well. We probably won't be seeing this show past the six episodes already in the can (but at least it escaped the fate of the Mullets, which was removed from the schedule completely). In fact, I wouldn't bet on seeing all six of those before it hits DVD. If anyone's interested, there's an episode guide in progress here (http://www.thelogbook.com/log/gameover/).

Dammit! I *knew* moving it to Friday night was gonna screw me!
Last night's episode was pre-empted by college basketball. Did anyone tape it who wasn't in some college basketball area? I've a feeling that the show may be cancelled anyday now, so I want to make sure I have all of the episodes on tape.
First Futurama gets pre-empted on Fridays by sports until it was sh!t-canned....now this.

I hope you're wrong Earl. I discovered late last week that GO was pre-empted on Friday (as my earlier post attests). However, it was moved in my area to Sunday at 8 p.m. And I discovered it AFTER that episode I missed was on. :( But THIS week, when it was pre-empted on Friday, I monitored the schedule on Sunday and there it was (both new episodes too)!
According to the GO website, this "FRiday", they were gonna air the last new episode and a repeat of the episode I had missed - thereby completing the series. Any chance that this will be aired on Sunday night just to finish our the series run? Or have you heard some inside "TV Talk?"
It's God, The Devil, and BOb all over again. Gonna have to wait until GO appearson Bravo until I see that final episode.

Here's the link (http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/gofuton.cgi?action=newswire&id=6503) - it's toast. Since I've been doing an episode guide, I wonder if I should contact the producers and ask for that last episode on tape or something needlessly ballsy like an interview. ;)

Looks like "Game Over: The Complete Series" (what's that then, a whole disc?) will be on DVD June 28th. Everyone will finally get to see the final episode, which, truth be told, is pretty damn funny.
Kind of a pity this show is firmly in the past tense.
