What do you people consider to be the best and worse remakes of a older game into a more 'newer' and up to date style?
Metroid: Zero Mission and Sword of Mana come to mind due to how new they are, but they were quite good.
Super Mario All Stars was also very good.
Ninja Gaiden Triliogy did'nt impress me as much. Yes, the password feature was very handy, and the music sounded better played in full stero sound, but they made several omisions in putting the three NES games onto one SNES pack. The lighting flashes in stage 2 of NG 2 that added so much to the gameplay of that stage was removed, for one example. And the credits with the ending scenes was cut out from each game.
The Final Fantasy packs for the PSX were very good (despite the slowdown that occurs on a couple of games) but Phantasy Star Collection on the GBA was passable at best. I had hoped for more then just a straight port of the game. I guess we need to wait to see if the updated versions come over here from Jaoan -- and where's my PS4? That was the best game in the series!

I want Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for the SNES. I haven't been able to find it here!
Anyways, here's my picks:
Super Mario All Stars was killer. My only compaint is not being able to access the minus world in SMB1.
Tetris/Dr Mario for SNES was good, although I wish they hadn't taken out the fireworks scene in Tetris.
My least favorite remake is from the "Super Mario Advance: Super Mario Bros. 2" for GBA. I wish they had left some of that extra stuff out, like collecting 5 coins in each level, for example. I also wish they had made the graphics more like the original NES game. However, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 wasn't too bad, and I like how you can play extra levels with e-reader cards.

The best: Xevious 3D/G+. Perfectly "remade" in every way. Fun to play, challenging, and doesn't stray away from all the things that made the original so fantastic.
Other great updates: Hasbro Q*Bert, Tempest 2000, Defender 2000, Smash TV, Total Carnage.
The crummy updates are too numerous to mention. :)

One craptastic remake that sticks out in my mind is Paperboy for the N64. I know a lot of people liked it but it was so far removed from the original that I just couldn't get into it.
A decent one would be the newer, 3D Gauntlet games. While the move from 2D to 3D changed things up a bit, the heart of the game is still there and it's still fun to play, especially with multi-player. It's the reason I bought 3 more Dreamcast controllers.

While TECHNICALLY not a remake, more of a "same license done in the same vein as the originals" game....the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is pretty bad. While I can play the original arcade game many times and never get tired of this I logged about 2 hours into this really trying to enjoy it but just...couldn't.
Plus the turtles sure have changes. When I first cut it on and went to pick my turtle, I picked Mike cause he's always been my favorite. Then I was "treated" to a voice sample of him saying "Mikey's in the hizzouse". I sat my controller down and just stared at the screen after that, I could'nt believe what I heard! What's wrong with the old turtles? Why did they have to do that to him!
:(

Tempest 2000.........the reason to still play an Atari Jaguar.....excellent remake that still captures the intesity of the original
Centipede for the Sega Dreamcast....Uhhhhhhh what were they thinking???

REmake of Resident Evil for the GCN, It made the game much more scarier IMO, and brought new life at least to that game.
Notable duds include
Spy Hunter 1/2 (not that they are terribly bad, they just arnt all that good either)
Maximo has been interesting take, though the new one(Vs. Army of Zin) is suppose to be much better than the first one

Tempest 2000 was an excellent remake (and the greatest update to a classic game I know of), and Super Mario Advance: Super Mario Bros. 3. Any game that can be as addicting to the original, after you've played the original to death is a great remake.
On the disappointing side I'd agree with Paperboy 64.

The one BAD example that come to mind is the Pitfall for the NES. I really didn't care for that at all.
The new Pac-Man for the Game Cube looks like the most innovative twist to the game EVER! Imagine playing the game where your buddies are the ghosts!!!! I can sense Loooong nights of smak-talking gaming with my friends comming up! LOL

My vote for best goes to Super Mario All-Stars.
Worst would have to go to the Tecmo Bowl series... it was all downhill after Tecmo Super Bowl was released on the NES.

As a good remake was Bomberman generation. That game rocks! I recommend it to anyone.

Which version was this with the eBonics O_O LOL
That's funny. I guess it IS the modern day equivalent of "hey dude, let's surf!" :)
However I want to keep my memories of TMNT the same, and if these games aren't anything like say, TURTLES IN TIME and earlier, then I don't know if I want it anymore :(
Was looking forward to buying both the GBA and the "next gen" one eventually...

My two fave re-makes:
Tempest-X (PSone)
RE-remake (gamecube)
and soon to be MGS:the twin snakes (gamecube)
Some of the worst: (just to name a few)
Blaster Master:blasting again (PSX) I got this game new for only 5.00$ and I tried to like it I really did :(
Pitfall (PSX) heres hoping the new Pitfall on Xbox,PS2,gamecube is far better
and oh so many more @_@

BEST:
- Metroid Zero Mission. Sweet looking graphics, and I was a fan of Metroid Fusion so it's nice to see the original done in the same style
- Super Mario 3. I like using the e-Reader to add the extra levels.
I'm looking forward to the upcoming GC remake of the original Metal Gear Solid too.
WORST:
- RE2 & RE3 (GC). No graphical updates? Come on. After the original REmake these two were really disappointing. And I really wished they'd replayed the tank controls.

Best remake, is Tempest 2000. IMO, it even surpasses the original.
Worst remake is Defender (the 3D travesty on the X-Box, GameCube, and PS2). It takes everything fun out of the game and poops on the rest.

The Resident Evil reamakes for GCN were good!
But Super Mario All Stars beats em' all! LOL

The Resident Evil reamakes for GCN were good!o.O
only pt1 was remade, the rest were just PSX ports. Really wish the ported the N64 RE2 instead, it contained files that related to RE: Zero
dont know about Code Veronica

There are some pretty good remakes of classic video games (along with the originals) on Konami Arcade Classics for the Game Boy Advance.
One of the least successful remakes, if you can call it that, was Galaga: Destination Earth. It couldn't decide if it wanted to be Galaga, Gyruss, or StarFox. It had a few good ideas but they weren't implemented well, and the game's constant identity crisis didn't help matters much either.
I'd also say that the Dreamcast version of Q*Bert is crap, although practically everyone here disagrees with me on this.

Best Remakes would def have to be super mario bros 3...i agree...i STILL beat the hell out of my smb3 and now i can beat it to hell on the road :D.
Yeah Tempest 2000 still the best
As for the turtles...i dont think its that bad....the voices are pretty lame id admitt and may not be as good as the old arcade versions, but i like it.
Worst oh yeah defender was the worst by a long shot, yeah i bought paperboy64 all expecting to have fun...hahaha...i was certainly mistaken

Zaxxon's Motherbase for the 32x sucks pretty bad and desecrates the Zaxxon name. It's nothing more than a Viewpoint clone (which is a Zaxxon clone, I suppose) that looks and plays awful. I hear the game's original name was just palin Motherbase but Sega added on the Zaxxon name to bring in the suckers.

I'm probably, no I know I'm alone on this, but I really dig Neo Mr. Do! I don't know if you could consider that a remake or new game though.
I also really dug the Space Invaders remake. (N64 is the version to get as the PSX has terrible load times.) I also really liked the Asteroids remake on the N64 and the GBC.
Plus like most of you, I'm all about Tempest 2000 and Q*Bert.
