Never really read many fanzines, so please excuse the lack of them. Some favorites of the past and present:
EGM - EGM just hasn't been the same for a long time. Sometimes their feature articles are kind of cool, but it's usually pretty boring stuff. How I miss the old 400+ page issues from the holiday seasons. I'd just look through all of those game and store ads in awe... waiting for Xmas. :)
GameFan - Never picked up an issue until late in their life. The quality was alright, but I liked their coverage of shooters and japanese titles no one else was touching.
GameGo! - Yeah, just one print issue and a second issue in PDF released to the public exist, but as far as "proffessional" magazines go, this one was really cool. Took GameFan's coverage of import/odd titles to a new level.
Game Informer: I remembering them being kind of crappy in the early-mid 90's (when they start?). At least the issues I picked up back then. They seem to the be 'next generation' Next-Gen. Heh. I like their newer stuff (though haven't picked up an issue in a good while... haven't picked up any game mags, period).
Game Players - I remember picking up on this one around 94 or 95. The sophmorish humor won me over. :)
Tips & Tricks - Getting better as the years go by. At least I think so. Haven't picked one up in a while, though.

Hmmmm...I seem to recall us talking about gaming magazines before...hey, didn't I start that thread? No matter. I currently subscribe to 5 magazines...
Nintendo Power--I don't know why I keep getting this...I like a lot of Nintendo's games but this is like the Disney of gaming mags. My subscription expires in 2 issues and this time I'll let it.
GameNow--I decided to take a chance on this...it's okay but overall I'm not too impresses with it.
PSM--I used to like this magazine...it probably hasn't changed that much but I only have the first PS, not the PS2, so there's really little in here that interests me now that hardly any games are coming out for the older system.
Game Informer--I mainly like this for the section on older games which I enjoy reading. Overall it's not a bad magazine and some of it is actually worth reading.
Electronic Gaming Monthly--This remains my favorite gaming mag. I won't say it's as good as it used to be but I enjoy the articles and the reviews. If I had to limit myself to one gaming mag, it would probably be this one.
Perhaps once my Nintendo Power sub runs out, I might get Tips & Tricks...

Well, I have to say, I despise pretty much all the game mags out these days. I like Gamefan, but I wouldn't actually pay money for it.
I had a subscription to Next Gen, but they wen't belly up. The only other mag I liked was Gamer's Republic, which also mysteriously vanished off the newsstand shelves. Mostly, they're all 2-3 weeks out of date continuously, and a lot of them aren't honest about their reviews cause 99% of them are either owned by the companies that make the systems, or ZD press. Anyway, I stopped reading them when Next Gen died, and I probably won't again for a long time.
The WORST one I've read however, is Official US Playstation Magazine...got a free subscription to it, and it was the worst piece if shite EVER! Half of the mag covered movies, CD's and books, and over 10 pages was usually devoted to a single tedious interview that rarely interested me. I hate that mag.......

I usually can't stand any of the console magazines (too old probably  ) so my favorite gaming magazine is Computer Games which used to have the great name Computer Games Strategy Plus. Good reviews and hardware features for PC gaming and it just seems to be written for a more adult gamer.
I haven't read too much of Tips and Tricks but after seeing it mentioned here, I've read it the last few months, it's not too bad and have especially enjoyed Joe's pages.

I know I am in the minority, but I still enjoy reading GamePro...don't know why, loyalty I guess. I've had a subscription for 11 1/2 years now

scooter...it's gotta be loyalty cuz I never understood the appeal of that magazine.
As far as mags go now, the only one I still buy in EGM, and that's only for the reviews. There's really no amazing videogame magazine right now. Here's what I would want:
The feature articles of old Next Gen, only more so
Quality design, a la Play or old Next Gen
Reviews like EGM
Good classic and import game coverage (more than just previews)
A more "serious" tone - not "Academic Journal" serious, but something at least as adult-friendly as Entertainment Weekly

The only gaming mag i ever liked was EGM circa the Ed Semrad years. After he left, the mag went to hell and only has gotten OK in the past few months IMO.

Actually kevincure, I do have one other reason for still, after 11 1/2 years (my subscription runs out in April of 2004!!!!) reading Gamepro...their reviews are dead on to what I'm looking for in a game. I know it's geared to kids, what video game mag isn't at some level?? I can accept that, the one thing I have almost always noticed though is that when they give all 4's and 5's to a game, I can trust that I will like that game as well.
And when they give a game 2's and 3's, I know that I should avoid that game like the plague...
So there it is, why I still enjoy reading GamePro magazine

Best games mags ever, in this order.
1. Gameplayers/Ultra Gameplayers (R.I.P.)
2. Gamefan (R.I.P.)
3. Next Gen (R.I.P.)
4. EGM (I guess....)

EGM and PC Gamer are the only mags I buy. Sometimes I pick up the Playstation mag for the disc but the mag sucks and I throw it out.

All I subscribe to these days is Official Xbox Magazine, and that's about 75% due to the demo disk.
In the past I've subscribed to Next Gen, Game Players, EGM and PSM. PSM only due to my Next Gen subscription being shifted to it when NG died, and it was a big waste of time. I got a 6 month sub. to EGM when I bought my GameCube, but I let that one expire too. I stuck with both NG and UGP/GP until the bitter end, and IMO those are still the two best ever.

EGM is all I read right now primarily because I only have time to read one mag every month (having a job with unpredictable O.T. can suck at times) but back in the day I used to swim through all of the above metioned mags, I still remember my first issue of Nintendo Power with the clay Mario on the cover hehe those were the days

Well, it goes without saying that I get Digital Press...but it's not quite the same as the other national 100 page plus color magazines. But if Joe wants to make it 200 pages with color...
