OK, I KNOW that some of you out there were rocking the DOORs games back in the day on your local (and not so local) BBSes! ASCII and ANSI art ruled the modem.
Aside from the obvious like L.O.R.D. what others to you remember and love?
Or if L.O.R.D. is all you remember thats cool too!
This is vintage computer gaming and vintage online multiplayer gaming as well IMHO since many of the games would allow you to fight others in real time if they were on the BBS at the same time
Aside from L.O.R.D. and its many add-ons, I used to play alot of Global War and another game which was basically an arena battle where you fight NPC's and other BBS members, what I liked is the early multiplayer aspect, cause say you killed your buddy in the game, and if he was online , then you'd get chat messages in the main board vowing revenge, just good dumb fun

Two words: TRADE WARS.
Thank you. :D

TW2002, Land of Devastation...
...and of course, Studs and Studettes.
I ran a BBS during high school and we had tons of door games. That, and a healthy collection of porno which we distributed to our other geeky high school friends. But people mostly played the door games.

You know.. I logged onto local BBS's for YEARS. But I never (and still haven't) ever figured out wtf a Door was. Yeah it looked like some kind of online multiplayer game, but since my only intention in dialing into BBS's was to download files, the last thing I wanted to do was talk with anyone let alone play some game with them. So, yeah.. I still have no clue what the heck Doors games were LOL

I used to play a hack and slash type of Door game, but I can't remember what the name of it was (It might even have actually been called "Hack 'n' Slash" or something like that)... I remember you could enter the dungeon, or challenge other players to fights (even if they weren't online)... you could buy a house and a security system for it, and you could attempt to rob other players houses and such. It was tons of fun, although I never got very far.
I think I used to play Trade Wars from time to time too, but it was so long ago now that I can't remember very well. I remember buying space ships, and hoping to ascend to the Iridium Throne (although I think that name was an option that the BBS owner decided on). I have no clue whether it was actually Trade Wars or some clone though.

Oh, and some of these can still be played online through web interfaces I think, even though they're a little dated by todays standards... anyone got any URL's to provide?

L.O.R.D. and its IGMs were enjoyable indeed.
Towards the end of the era, I discovered The Clans, which is similar but has much more depth. You need to have a lot of people playing for it to really take off, I think.

I loved playing LORD with friends myself a few years back.

I can't believe I missed this thread! :)
Go find your past, people! Lots to play via telnet. Not sure what other door games may be available on line through other web interfaces.

Anywho, check out http://www.bbsmates.com as a good starting place for finding some of your DOOR games. Also lots of ads on usenet groups for BBSs and most list what door games they have available.

I absolutely loved LORD back in the day! I had like two dozen different BBSes I played LORD on. I found a website that had a Telnet version of LORD, and I tried playing that for a while, but it just didn't seem the same.
I also played a game called Usurper, which was similar to LORD but had a lot more to it. There was a 100 level dungeon you could go through to collect treasures and exp, but the multiplayer aspect was the focus. Players could create/join "gangs" and have full on wars with other gangs. It was fairly cool.
I also remember a game, I think it was called The Pit. It used ASCII graphics to represent a fighting pit where you controlled your gladiator, and you could fight monsters or other players. I didn't play this one too much, but I had a friend who did.

Tradewars is the only game I ever played. I played it again last year and it was still just as fun.

You know, I think this was the one I was talking about in my first post, the Pit does sound familiar (wouldn't think it'd be that hard to remember that name :) You woulld have an alloted amount of monsters you could fight a day, and then if you wanted you could attack other players who were still "alive"

Wow... I didn't see this thread earlier.
Though there isn't a timeframe known yet, I'm working currently on putting my BBS back up via Telnet. I have a dedicated computer handling the task... maybe by this time next month? (I have vacation in between). I do have LORD, LORD2, and Tradewars (plus Usurper, and others) up and going and will have others. I'll post something when it's at least in a beta stage :)

Welp, even though I posted this on the main page, might as well post it here.
BBS is back up with Tradewars, Usurper, LORD and more running at:
