The furvert crowd emerged in the 1980s from the worlds of "furry" fandom, a non-sexual fan subculture devoted to cartoon animals from comic books and animated TV shows. The difference between a "furry" fan and a "furvert" is that furverts sexualize their cartoon characters. While outsiders find the combination of cute childhood imagery and sexuality to be disturbing, furverts have no interest in sex with children. This is about "growing up" childhood dreams and fantasies.

Furverts might imagine themselves as a cute rabbit inspired by Bugs Bunny, a unicorn from Disney's Fantasia, or a werewolf from Japanese Anime films. Furvert activity consists primarily of creating or collecting illustrations of their own imaginary furry character, and roleplaying online in MUDs ("multi-user dungeons".)
Interestingly, a very high percentage of the furvert scene is comprised of gay men. This is partially because one of the original convention organizers was a gay man who promoted it to the general gay community. There may be other reasons as well: There has long been an affinity between some gay men and Disney animated movies and characters. Creative costuming and performing are more acceptable among men in the gay community than in the straight community.

Several male furverts credit early sightings of Bugs Bunny in drag (a surprisingly common occurrence in Warner Bros cartoons!) for their growing awareness of their complex sexuality.
Serious furverts can go to furry summer camps and conventions, where they might interact with other furverts in role or in homemade costumes -- called fursuits -- resembling sports mascots outfits. (Obviously, not all people who wear fursuits have a fursuit fetish. Just as furverts are a sexy subset of non-sexy furry fandom, fetish fursuiters are a small subset of the large crowd of professional fursuit wearers.) Though I should mention here that I've heard some delightful stories about Brer Fox giving Brer Bear a blow job during a break at Disneyland. This just makes me soooo happy.

These fetish fursuiters also overlap somewhat with the plushie scene, people who fetishisize stuffed plush animals like teddy bears. In this case, the plush material itself is the core fetish, elaborated with the characters and plotlines of cartoons and children's books. (And no, these aren't pedophiles either. They have NO INTEREST in sex with children.)
Increasingly, furverts are beginning to explore BDSM scenarios and BDSM fantasies, particularly ponyplay. Furry artist Pelzig has been much influenced by the SM-inflected art of Japanese Anime films.
