As a sort of swan song for my website, I decided to find out about the unreleased game, Fireteam Rogue. This game was being made for Snes and Genesis by accolade. After 2 years of development, it was canned, likely due to the decline of the 16 bit systems.

I was unable to find anyone with a copy of the game, so I had to rely on info I got from one of the engineers and from two websites that had art from the game.

Enjoy this article, it will likely be the last one I do for Snes Central for at least a year.

Sorry, but I really don't have any time to work on it within the next year. Perhaps after I graduate I will, but that won't be until April 2005. I had planned to work on it during the summer, but I will not be around in the summer. The web designer of the site may get a database system working this summer, which would facilitate making updating easier, but if it isn't done, I will not update.

Updating the site costs me precious game playing time. ;)

Well, I got permission from Carnivol to release the rom, so enjoy folks!

The game is in an alpha state, so don't expect too much.

I made some gameplay videos and put them on youtube for anyone who doesn't feel like bothering with the ROM.

I just purchased a prototype of Fireteam Rogue that happens to be far more complete than Carnivol's prototype. The game is not really that good in the state it was in (mainly due to poor controls), but it had potential. They also added in shooter stages.

The seller was under the impression that the build of the prototype was identical to that of the rom in circulation. It's interesting to hear that it's further along than what was thought.

So it's farther along, but is it still far from complete? I know that the original rom was extremely early. Any cut scenes or anything interesting?

Yeah, I got it as well. It worked out for the best to get both because I needed the board to play both games (the FTR chips were actually on the board originally).

As for the level of completion, the main stages look almost finished. There are no sound effects except when you pick up items. Really, the biggest flaw is that you can't attack when jumping, making it very frustrating to hit a lot of enemies. The graphics are also Genesis-tastic.

That's great you found a newer proto! I thought the old one seemed interesting - though I'm not surprised it's still not a very good game.

Yeah, I noticed how Genesisy the graphics were in the original proto. I know it was multiplatform, so I guess they just went for what both platforms could do without taking advantage of the benefits of either.

Hi, that game looks pretty good.
I discovered the famous alpha rom some months ago and got impressed... I don't know how does the unreleased games have to be so mysterious LOL

I even ripped its music and made a video with all the tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOCnD5lhUrA

I hope the new encountered proto is dumped soon, I just can't wait to see more of FTR.

It is dumped, but I have been in the process of moving to another country, so I haven't had time to work on an article yet. Hopefully within the next few weeks I will get it out.

Great article!

Given the compression difficulties, I wonder if the project could've had a chance if it was simply given the green light to jump to 24 megabit earlier in development. Was the cost increase really that much of a problem? Donkey Kong Country was already out and that was 32 megs.

The later version includes shooter levels, what the..? I thought it was only a platformer. Trying to do too much is an understatement...

How long does it take to "finish" the playable areas in the alpha?

That comparison flyer is good stuff. A sports game like Madden '95 should be on the list, too. "Flight simulator?" "No".

Thanks so much, Evan! I've always found Fireteam Rogue interesting, and your writeup is great.

The download link for the ROMs seems to be broken though.

Arg, I didn't check that before uploading. The links are fixed now.

Happy!! :onfire:

I'm happy because I can see more of this lost jewel. I've playing along the rom... it has a lot of changes!
The levels are more complete, there're more music tracks, the flying stages... I think I'll be making videos of the newer proto, if none of you does first xD

I hope the last version of the game before quitting from the project wasn't destroyed, so we could dream even more.

PD: the game is funny \\^_^/
