Hey Kaine,
I loves me some Crazy Climber. It's hard to beat the arcade game if you want to try it out, but in a pinch I'd recommend the Playstation import versions of it, especially if you've got a twin fighting controller.

How's the arcade/MAME editions and there any home versions (outside of the PS1 imports)?

MAME is good if you have an X-Arcade or similar dual-joystick setup. It's a dual joystick game, and that control scheme is absolutely vital to really getting the most out of Crazy Climber.
The Atari 2600 version is rare, and what's more it just doesn't do it for me.
If I'm not mistaken, it's also available as an SNES import, but I haven't personally played that version of it.

Thanks PDF. I'm gonna try it sometime. You need 2 joysticks to move the Climber in all directions then?

For MAME? Ideally. Otherwise, try to set up two key clusters, one for each hand. I tried to do that a long time ago and it was a pain in the butt. I pretty much swear by the PS1 version now.
The 2600 edition is a single-joystick translation, and that just robs it of a lot of its uniqueness. To me anyway. I know there are also folks who like the 2600 Crazy Climber a lot.

Issue? Issue of what? Am I missing out on something again? :?
As far as Crazy Climber goes.. definitely one of my all time favorite games. :D To me however, I can't really play the U.S. version with it's english voices like "go for it" and "ouch", it just sounds wrong! To me the game HAS to have the kooky jap voice that gave it so much charm when I played it.. call it nostalgia, but BAMBALA and BRAAWK! just sound so much funnier and made CC such a kooky game :P Ah well.

I find in Mame.. you know, using the keyboard isn't so bad at all! I use E,D,S,F for the left and I,J,K,L for the right. Call me nuts but sometimes the response seems to be better and easier to control once you get used to it. You can play the Mame version on the xbox and use the two analog sticks on that too which works out very well also. Aside from that, yeah the psx versions are great as well.
Other quirky ones you can probably try and find is the Famicom version which uses two pads held vertically, or of course the Bandai Handheld (or the Entex.. but that's harder to find). The Bandai handheld does a pretty good job of duplicating the arcade game with it's two joysticks.. even better than the 2600 :P There's also a keychain version if you can find it.

I love Crazy Climber but I never mastered it.
For an early arcade game, it has a VERY steep learning curve. It's something you need to try, even if in MAME, but be sure you've got the controls down - I can imagine someone trying the game for the first time using a keyboard and thinking WTF and giving up on the game.
Twin stick. Patience. Many quarters. These are the requirements for the Crazy Climber player.

D'oh! Yup, you're missing out on our infamous bi-monthly publication. It's THE bio-degradable source for videogamers, the 56th issue was just published! See the handy-dandy link in my sig for all the gory details. :)

Yeah! The Bandai version is surprisingly well done. Naturally, the coin-op version is best, but in a pinch any of the dual-controller supported versions will suffice.
There are also sequels in the form of "Rock Climber" (1981) and Crazy Climber 2 (1988). Rock Climber is a little tougher, CC2 gives the original a nice graphical facelift but it remains pretty true to the spirit of Crazy Climber. Still, the first is the best of the series.

Ok! I signed up! However I used Paypal.. which is under my wife's name. Is it possible to alter it so that issues are sent to MY name? Joe let me know.. it's nothing big, but just a formality that would avoid my wife going "why the heck are these being sent to me?!" kind of deal :P

"Go for it! Ouch! OH NO!"
CC was a game that I watched my brother play all the time on the computer. Then eventually, I got to play it. Really damn hard game, it is. I hate those heavy objects that rain down on you, like barbells and iron girders. I still can't get past the last stage, Nichibutsu U.K. Limited. Hey, is there any disadvantage to receiving a shock from the wild Nichibutsu electrical sign? The dual joysticks bit on the keyboard is difficult to manage. (e.g. Karate Champ) I love this game, but it drives me insane sometimes. All the more reason to love it. :)

How's CC play for the PSX import and I take it you need the mod right?

You do need the mod. Here's a review (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/nichi/) I wrote of the Nichibutsu Arcade Classics compilation for the PS1; keep in mind that the MajorWave re-releases that came out a couple of years ago, which are much easier to get, simply pair off the individual games and their updated versions, hence the Crazy-Climber-only import that's out there.
I like it a lot, personally. The review was written before I got the twin stick for the PS1, and let me tell ya, the twin stick doesn't do anything but make it LOTS better. As close as you're gonna get to the arcade game without the original dedicated cabinet in my opinion.

A few notes on the issue...
Stellagets a new brain was officially licensed by the current Starbath copyright holders. I'd say that puts it higher then just a disc of romz ;p
Getting a high grade in SF3: 3rd Strike, if I recall, means you have to do alot of combos, finish with supers, and parry damn near everything.
