View Full Version : I finally beat the "Greatest RPG of all time".

All the praise, all the glory given to one little SNES game - Chrono Trigger - and I finally nailed Lavos down and beat the game. Now, I had never played this game until I bought it last month. Was all the praise really worthy, or had nostalgia made a pretty great game into a legendary one?

First off, I still think Final Fantasy III (VI) is the best SNES RPG out there. But if I were to list a top three, FFIII would be 1A and CT would be 1B. The only thing preventing CT from topping FFIII was that I found it a bit easier than it's cousin.

Still, I love time travel, I loved the plot from beginning to end... they found a way to incorporate a frog knight and a robot without ruining the suspension of disbelief... Incredible. I knew I had to play this for my next article here but I was blown away by how great this game really was. People who praise this up and down aren't messing around.

If you haven't played this yet, play it. Some way some how.

And yes, just like at the end of Wild Arms... I cried at the ending of CT. I won't spoil it but for some reason I have a soft spot for robots in despair.

I was SO afraid this post was going to be about FF7.....

....and yes, for those who haven't played CT, it's everything they say it is. Bought the game new when it came out (for $70 @_@ ), still my favorite rpg.

Awww... I love FF7! It's not in the same class as 2 or 3, or CT for that matter, but it's in my top ten. Best of the PSX FFs anyway... but let's not get into this argument. Again.

Knowing now how great it is, I wouldn't have had an issue paying $70 for it cart only. It's that good. I got it for $40 with manual and official strat guide, so I'm not complaining at that price either :)

A great game indeed. For those who can't afford/don't want to pay a lot for the SNES version, you can get Final Fantasy Chronicles for $20 new now. I have a non-GH PS1 version and an SNES cart.

Chrono trigger is the greatest game ever. Not a single game has even come close to eclipsing this masterpiece. I LOVE CHRONO TRIGGER!!!!!!!!

Don't you have to play it again now to get one of the other 17 endings?

I'm just asking because I thought one of the big things about CC was a bunch of different endings.

Oh yeah, also I'm glad this wasn't about FF7. \^_^/

and I kan't spel 2day.

$70 Bsh!!!! RIPOFF!!! CT is a great game indeed but there is just too much price hype alltoghether. Don't pay 70 when you can pay around 40 for it. My friend bought one for 31 on Ebay and I traded around 35 worth of stuff for it. As good as it is its only worth around 40 IMO. I can remember when the Music Recyclery (local chain (of morons and idiots) aound me) was selling it for $139.99!!!!! If you cant find it for cheap, jsut wait your day is coming.

OK I'll shut up now.

I'd have to agree with you about that. Although Chrono Trigger is a damned fine game. I wouldnt say it was as good as all the hype. I would say paying 20 for it on PSX is the way to go. There are plenty of other games to be had that are good for less than 40.

Ya, I remember when Chrono Trigger first came out. I rented it and kept it about a week past due. I ended up having a pretty sizeable late fee, but hey, it was worth it to beat the game. Chrono Trigger is indeed a great game, it was very innovative for its' time.

I too would like to express pleasure at learning that this thread is not about FF7.

Chrono Trigger is the game I always mention when someone starts talking about games as art. All of the elements just come together so perfectly. Truly, it was a dream team that put that game together. I only hope I can get a PS1 to play Chrono Cross someday.

As you may know, the obscure SNES text-based sequel to Chrono Trigger, Radical Dreamers, got an excellent translation (http://radicaldreamers.sourceforge.net) not so long ago. It's worth playing it just to listen to more of Mitsuda's music.

I second that. But back to CT, it is definitely one of my top 5 favorite RPGs, and I might have to rank it #1 along with FF3, but I have a hard time ranking any game.

I thought Chrono Cross was a very well done game. The battle system kicked ass. Of course, there were an assload of characters, but I can forgive that.

Chrono Cross is alright, but I don't think it even approaches the genius that is ChronoTrigger. The thing that really annoys me about Chrono Cross is the artificial limitation that they put on it - your characters can't get better at anything until they fight a boss, and all those other battles you almost always have to go through (no matter how hard you dodge the mobs) are completely meaningless.

I cant stand 3d squaresoft games, I dont know what it is about them but I have given them many chances and have always turned around and walked the other way.

I dont think Chrono Trigger is that great, I love the Battle System and the Story, but it just gets extremely boring at times.

I prefer Lunar 1 and 2 over any other RPG, I remember beating each of those one summer, oh the good ol' days.

Meh, RPGs.. my sister was more into that. I remember her devoting a solid week one summer towards getting all of the endings for Chrono Trigger.

I did the same thing. Granted, I could never get the ending with Marle and Lucca's slide show, so I've been meaning to go through the game again, perhaps with the PSX version. It has needlessly inconvenient load times, but the new animated scenes reveal some interesting connections with Chrono Cross.

As for Chrono Cross, I wasn't completely disappointed with it. The battle system's fun, and, with the tropical look and Mitsuda's soundtrack, the game is absolutely beautiful, so much so that I can forgive the frequently inept direction, underdeveloped supporting cast, and over-twisted plot threads.

While they aren’t part of the Chrono series, Xenogears and Xenosaga use a lot of the ideas tested out in Chrono Trigger. Xenogears (which supposedly began life as a CT sequel) has parties of three, similar sprite-work, a cameo by Lucca, and other telling details, such as the ability to walk away when talking to people. Xenosaga has less in common with CT, but some elements remain, and Episode 2 will reportedly have combo attacks.

Another Chrono Trigger relative that isn't mentioned too often is Ion Storm's Anachronox. Like Xenosaga, it puts on a space-opera setting, yet the three-member parties and battle system resemble CT, and most of the main characters could be seen as tributes to Crono and company. It's no surprise that the game's creator, Tom Hall, is a huge Chrono Trigger fan.

I remember playing Chrono Trigger for hours and days when I was younger when I first got it and I still enjoy it to this day, the PSX remake and the SNES cart (both which I own). Most of the new game+ endings I got via the game genie though, mainly the programmer's ending.

boo@ game genie, I got the programmer's ending legit :) wasn't that hard really, especially since I ganked power tabs aplenty using the black omen path the first time through.

I want to see the Lucca/Marle slide show as well but I'm not sure if I feel like beating lavos a third time in two days :)

It has taken me years to finally 'like' CT. The only reason I didn't care for it is because of this:

It was 1992. I finally beat FF2(4) and started my own little time traveling sequel to it on paper... Designing characters, enemies, maps, etc...

Cut to a few years later.

I open an issue of NP and see Square's new game. I start reading about it... and see it. Time travel. NO! I wanted FF2 to have a sequel that involved Time Travel. Not an entirely new game!

Of course they don't make sequels to FF games (Though FFX-2 is an exception), and they would have never used my idea, but it still pissed me off big time. I have played through CT and love the graphics and music (I even stayed home 3 days from school in a row to play it), but that time travelling plot, grrr! I'm just NEVER going to get over it

Oh yeah, on the topic of better RPGs than CT, there is a little gem called FF2(4) :D

Chrono Trigger - badass

Final Fantasy III - badass

My cousin had these games back in the day... played through them a few times, and he let me borrow them for the longest time. And then one day, he came over and wanted them back. Said he was going to Game Crazy to exchange them for N64 games. It was a very sad day. I miss those games and hope to get them someday.

The Lucca/Marle slide show is without doubt one of the hardest endings to get. In addition, most of the guides have it wrong, so that makes it even more difficult to find. My friend and I found it, but it's a long, drawn out annoying process to get to it.

By the way, did the PSX version of Chrono Trigger have any new or different endings?

If i remember correctly....

*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*

What you have to do is work your way all the way through that dark fortress thing, and get right outside the room where, when you enter, Lavos is going to obliterate Crono. Then, do an about face, and climb all the way back out of the fortress, and go tackle Lavos (use the bucket or whatever). I think that ought to do it for you.

*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*SPOILER*

So, that's what I meant by it being a long, drawn out, annoying process.

YES, the remake of CT on the PSX DID have a new ending. I have'nt seen it myself, but it's susposed to tie into events leading to Chrono Cross.

Chrono Trigger was fun -- I played it on a emulator only two years ago, as I missed the game when it first came out. I've always liked Chrono Cross more, though. Yes, the story is damn confusing but it's a good one (reminds me of Breath of Fire 2 in some ways), the music ROCKS, and the gameplay is fun.
