View Full Version : Things You Don't Like in Games

What are the things in games that turn you off? Those annoyances, petty to some, that put games on your "do not play list"?
I can think of a few...
UNSKIPPABLE CUT SCENES... Nothing will put a game in my permanent back catalog than a bunch of "story" that I can't skip through.
EARNED SAVES....Saving is a convenience. Don't make it inconvenient. Don't make me look around for video tapes, typewriter ribbons, etc. Don't make me look around for "save rooms" unless there are a lot of them (i.e. SOTN, Metroid Prime). If I have to play a whole level to save a game, make the level short.
REQUIRED TRAINING...You know, I feel pretty darn safe starting a game without training to do so. If I ever need to fly a real airplane, drive a real F1 car, or fly a real space ship, I will be looking to train first. Otherwise, I play a videogame with the faith that it will not kill me in reality. I don't need a license to drive a car in a game.
WATER AND FIRE...If I'm playing a firefighter game or a jet ski game, I'm looking for this. I don't want to take Mario or Lara Croft for a swim. I don't want to fly a space ship under water. I don't want a fast paced game to suddenly become a slow paced game. When you can realistically portray fire in a game, give me a call.
ISOMETRIC VIEWS...Diagonal world is not where I want to be. Sorry Zaxxon. Sorry Blue Max. Sorry Viewpoint, Light Crusader, Syndicate, Captain Quazar, Project Overkill. Sorry.
UNCONFIGURABLE CONTROLS...There is no reason this should ever happen.
N64 MEMORY CARD SAVES...You have a cartridge; use it.
NO RESET, NO EXIT, NO RETRY, NO RESTART...I start the game, and realize I goofed up. I forgot to configure the controls. Or I forgot to load my save. I picked the wrong character or ship. I picked the wrong course or level. I die in 2 seconds because I sneezed. No problem, I'll just pause and...hey, where's the "exit game" option?Where's "reset"? "Where's "retry"? "Restart?" "New game?" Do you mean I have to press the reset button on the system? I have to wait for the game to reload? Ahhh, to heck with it, I think I'll go play MAME instead.
ROLL CREDITS...A winner is me! I finished the game! Now I think I'll sit back and reflect on all the wonderful Japanese people that brought me this experience. After all, just having finished the game, I couldn't possibly have any desire to play again, right? I'm alright with waiting five or ten minutes to try again on a greater difficulty, aren't I?

BARRELS AND CRATES- holy crap, with all the creative juices flowing, is it really necessary to still keep barrels and crates everywhere. i have super enter the matrix powers and need to get up to a high place. instead of doing a cool crazy matrix looking thing, i get to move around boxes in a particular order to open up a secret door and climb up the crates to get to the door. barrels, i need not say more. come on people, with games like manhunt, do you really need to keep putting barrels in games?

I hate games that you can only do something once in and you can never go back to it to make up for something that you missed....example...your catalog or whatever it is in Metroid Prime....you forget to scan a few things and you can never get them again.
I also hate slooooooooooooooooow moving text or spoken speech that you cannot just hit a button to skip through.
I also hate games like Maximo on PS2 where you can only save at certain places....if I have to go do something I wanna be able to save...not play for another hour until I get to a save spot.
I pretty much agree with all the things above also.

Here's the one beef I have with games that trumps all others:
FIRST. PERSON. F***ING PERSPECTIVE.
that is all.

First, let me say, Cmosfm, that's a hot avatar. AdamG, once again, your avatar is making me question my own sexuality. Dammit.
What I hate in games is simple: long tutorials coupled with bad controls. Case in point, I hate Oni for PS2. A tutorial with controls that almost caused me to destroy the controller in my hands.

My biggest pet-peeve of the modern gaming world:
UNLOCKABLES-I payed for the game, let me use it in it's entirety dammit!
I refuse to go on meaningless 6-hour scavenger hunts in modern games, just to earn the luxory of unlocking something.

The credit roll CAN be awesome, look at the ending of Alien Storm (http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/arcade/a/alisto.htm) in the arcades. Funniest ending sequence ever...and that's saying a lot, 'cuz it's pretty hard to beat out Golden Axe's (http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/arcade/a/gaxe.htm), Video Game DOYDOY Eirou!, HAGA, Hokari Sweat and all.
Probably, Alien Storm's ending is better because the Golden Axe logo is in there and all that other hillarious...stuff.
Much better (and more impressive) in action. I've never seen so many graphics moving across the screen in so short a time in a game of its age.
Barrels and crates...YES! THEY SUCK! O:
One game in which training is halfway HOLY SUCK but halfway AWESOME would be America's Army. I managed to get sniper qualified, holy crap though. The parachute jump onto a target in the dark is damn hard, because they never bother to tell you that you must be looking level when you land (I guess you pancake otherwise). The Special Forces E&E mission is damn near impossible, and I've tried it a few times and gotten to the second restart point...and very far along there. Still, there's a lot of really interesting stuff in the training, make no mistake.

Water Levels: I never liked them. EVER. They always pissed me off. I love everything but water levels. And credits. I just beat the game, I don't want to sit through a list of names I can't even pronounce.

Games that lack auto-save but should have it. I'm playing R-Type Final (I know, I'm about a month late), and it is a game that screams Auto Save. That, or I can't find it.

i agree watching the credits really sucks.... they kinda made it more fun in super smash bros melee.. where its like ur flying a space ship and the names are flying around and u shoot em and stuff and after the credits are done, u get a score of how many you hit.

A lot of people are ranking on speech/story that you can't skip. I agree that this sucks. But I kind of hate speech in games in general.
I tried playing Shenmue with the voices off recently, and lo and behold, I didn't feel embarrassed to be playing it when my girlfriend walked in the room anymore.
Voices in video games have always sucked. From Y's Book I and II for the Turbo-CD, all the way to Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. It needs to get better, or stop. I know some games have gotten better, but they don't pick up the slack for all the others.
Now, voice SAMPLING can be cool (ya' gotta admit it's cool in SOTN when Alucard loses all his armor and yells "WHAT?" in that affected, reverb-heavy voice). But long dialogues are painful.

I don't understand what everybody's problem with credits is. Personally after going through a long and tough game, I don't mind sitting through credits. It can be pretty relaxing. Especially if the music that plays during them is nice, like in Metroid's ending on Nes.

I think im also speaking for others here.., but those damn capsulses in super smash melee when they explode. Sometimes its the only way a player can get out!

Every RPG player out there will hate me for this (especially since they encourage it), but for damn's sake, when I put 'Wait' on in FF battles, ACTUALLY WAIT FOR A DAMN MINUTE. >: (
Also, I don't mind voices, but for christ sake make them NON-REPETITIOUS. It was hell trying to beat that level 3 girl in Bust a Move 2 without slipping after hearing that 'dododododo' voice for the hundreth time. But there was always Mute. Oh Mute, I love thee.

Bugs.......when I play a game that I pay $50.00 for, it better not crash on me, wig out, or have serious glitches and bugs.
Short playthrough.....beating a game in a couple of hours with no reason to go back
Generic design....a game that is kind of like this, that, and that, all of which has been degenerated into a medicore ho hum compliation.
Choppy framerate....this = not fun to play
I could go on, but it pisses me off too much to think how many games these days includes these!

Unskippable Cutscenes - I like to see them every now and then but if I'm trying to have a quick game the cutscenes will kill my joy.
Stupid Random Battles - Why RPG developers waste so much effort trying to make their worlds beatiful if I can't even watch this beauty because every freaking two seconds some jackass attacks my party? Where's the exploration?
Ice Levels - Why every game have to have one? side note .: I love water levels! :D
Puzzles with one, and just one, solution - Zelda, I'm looking at you. If your mind doesn't works in the same (insane) way of the guy who made these puzzles your only hope is Gamefaqs...

Like they said, it's impossible to please everyone. :)
Unskippable (is that a word?) cutscenes.
Escort missions.
Difficult levels/stages where, if you screw up, you have to go ALL THE WAY BACK!
Pisses me off.
LEVELLING UP...If I clear one dungeon, for example, and then my entire party gets destroyed seconds after entering the next then your game isn’t balanced. Don’t make me waste my time.

Dying. Repeatedly. At the exact same friggin' point. R-Type comes to mind as I type this. It doesn't help if I have limited continues either. The rage is increased tenfold if the deaths aren't my fault. And yet, I haven't completely totaled any of my controllers yet. I did misappropriate my force enough to disable the rumble feature on one of my PS2 controllers, but its control is still grand. I hopefully won't have to finish it off.
I also hate missions in certain games that are all about defense, because you fail the mission if someone other than you dies. I couldn't care less about other lives besides my own. Selfish, yes, but I just don't like protection/"save some guy" missions! (e.g. "Death Row" in Vice City, or any other mission that requires Lance's survival)

The problem is the credits you can't skip. I don't have a problem with credits per se...it's just that sometimes at the end of a game I want to proceed right to my unlockable, or start again on a higher difficulty, or something. When a game takes me months to finish (ie GTAVC) I don't mind sitting there watching the credits, it's just that I shouldn't have to.
Also, some games bring the credits out way too early. The worst offender is DC Daytona, which punishes you for placing first in single race by making you watch the credits.

Escort missions.
I can't believe I forgot about this in my original post. I HATE HATE HATE escort missions. Especially when I have to "protect" a character with lousy AI. IMO this ruined Perfect Dark.
I dislike playing Iron Soldier/IS2 (Jaguar) specifically because of the mission(s)where you have to escort a convoy through the streets & anticipate which enemy is going to do what. You miss one too many, & it's all over. Sucks.
Also the IS2 mission where you have to destroy the ice-cream trucks before THEY explode. There should be an objective, not an ABSOLUTE CERTAIN DEFINITE WAY to achieve it. It's almost as if that mission is "on rails".
Are there escort/protect missions in Iron Soldier 3?

well, since this topic isn't locked (which really surprises me) I'll chime in with my response...
Games that give you 50 million different branching paths and ways to go. With my limited amount of gameplay time I want to play a game, start to end, that's all. I don't want to go this way and get a normal ending, or take the wrong path and get the bad ending, etc. etc.
One game. One path. One Ending.
I know this is contridictory to what most people think, but I like to keep it simple.
That an I hate new FPS games, I like Wolfenstien 3D and Doom, but once the option to look up and down came in the genre was fucked for me.

FINAL FANTASY X-2 has and contains just about everything I hate about games fruity a$$ gameplay unoriginal storylines rehashed backgrounds from the previous game and dressing your characters for different abilities? I mean CMON! what is this barbies dress up!
Honestly I luved the original FF's especially on Supernes and 7 was a really good game also but after part 9 on PSone the series has went to sh!t.

Things I hate in games...
-Timed Levels (I hate the levels in games where you have a timer with just enough time to make it! I mean, the kind where if you make one minor mistake your screwed!. DieHard:Trilogy for the PSX comes to mind, the last few driving levels are a pain in the ass!)
-Barrels and Crates (Can't they come up with anything better then this?)
-Water levels where you can run out of air (this explains it self)
-Enemys that don't play fair (I hate hiding behind a wall in a game during an intense shootout, only to have the bullets being shot at me pass through the wall and kill me)
-The insane boss that has 2082060586775754535 HP (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about)
