Well, this FINALLY came out yesterday. Picked it up before work and got a chance to play it for a while after work and before I got too tired for bed. :D

Is the game worth the weight? IMHO, yes, and I feel it's worth buying again even if you allready have the original MGS for the PSX. Why? Well....

For starters, the re-design is really good. I remember reading when the game was first announced that Miyamoto was going to be working with Kojima and Konami on the remake. That must have fallen through, because they got the help of Silicon Knights instead, makers of the most awsome game Eternal Darkness. (One of the new items in the game is a 'adult book' that has pictures of Ella and Alex from the game. :-P )

I'm assuming you've allready PLAYED the game like 99.9 percent of the gaming population by this point -- after all, the original MGS came out in 1998. (If you have'nt, you're in for a treat.) So you're probaly wondering -- what's so good about the re-design?

Of course, the graphics have been upgraded and look much sharper. It shows off the GameCube's power. Solid Snake looks larger on the screen, and it's easier to see small touches like pools of water, exposed mines, etc.

The music and sound effects are upgraded, with Pro Logic II support. This makes those of us with good sound systems easily tell where sounds are coming from.

The AI in the game is MUCH improved. The enemies are a LOT smarter and are much harder to avoid. They listen quite well, investigate things, and basicaly make it more of a challenge to snoop around.

A lot of features were taken from MGS 2 in this one -- you can open lockers and hide in them, do a rolling kick, collect dog tags from soliders, and there's both Caution and Evasion security levels along with the full Red Alert. :)

New items in the game include a tranquiser gun, the aforementioned book, a motion sensor that causes your controler to rumble if a enemy is near (VERY usefull if your radar is jammed), and empty magazines, which you can toss to create a noise distraction for enemy soliders.

You also have the new ability to hang from pipes and ledges. It's actualy a guage now. You can only hang from the item for so long before you automaitcaly fall. There's a secret way of increasing this power so you can hang longer. There's one situation at least where this is critical.

The game also still has the long briefing from the main menu to provide background information, the option to go take 'ghost' photos as well as collect dog tags, bonus items if you win the game, and the 'secret' tricks with Psycho Mantis and your memory card and controlers. :D

One last thing -- during cutscenes, you can also use the C Stick to move the camera around and view the action from different angles. It's not critical but it's a nice touch. :)

The game also takes up two CD's, due to the size of the program.

All in all, a very impressive remake. And it's a little cheaper then most new games, at $40. As I said at the start, I think it's well worth picking up even if you have the original.

Anyone else gotten this yet?

I haven't played it yet (no Cube) but I was talking to someone yesterday that has. His biggest complaint was that the entire voice track was redone, and doesn't sound as good as the original. For instance, Snake sounds much gruffer, Mei Ling and Naomi don't have their respective accents anymore, and so on. Other than that, he said it was great.

I haven't picked it up yet, and I probably won't until the price drops down a little. I am very excited to play the game even though I have played MGS back in the day, but I can't see myself paying more than $20-25 for a game that I've already played. I've seen some footage and the game does look great and from what I read in articles and what you just said it looks like its worth the money for those new to the series or die hard fans. Definitely something for Cube owners to get excited about though.

I went to work to pick this up on my day off. I fondly remember the hype surrounding the original, and that the game failed to disappoint on every level. There was nothing sub-par about, everything was top notch.

That was 1998.

Now, under a new coat of paint, it's not quite the same. It looks and sounds great. As a matter of fact, I am astounded at the quality of the cut scenes and the amazing sound and music. However, the game shows it's age from a gameplay standpoint. I guess I'm spoiled many recent games where you have more control over the camera. I keep finding myself trying to manipulate it. The character control feels too stiff, as well. Stiff when based on other current titles, that is. It worked back then, but there have been too many advances for it to have stayed the same. The small additions from MGS2 help a bit, but it just feels dated overall.

I'm impartial to the changes in the voice acting, as I think they convey the story better, yet I miss the original voice track for some reason.

Despite the control gripes, it's a very good game--but only recommended to die-hard fans of the series, and newcomers who have not played the original. All others whould wait until it drops in price.

A few months ago, I went back and tried to replay the original Metal Gear Solid for the playstation, so most of the aspects of the game are/were fresh in my mind when I popped in Twin Snakes. First thing that continues to bother me, when thinking back on the original, is the voice acting. The voice overs in the original were amazing...but in Twin Snakes..."meh". Most of the big name character voice overs returned, except people like Naomi and Mei Ling. Another factor is just about everyone seems as if they are reading straight from a script and not trying at all. I noticed it a lot in the scene with the DARPA Chief, Donald Anderson.

Another thing that drives me nuts is all the "bullet time"/Matrix BS. It seems just about every movie and game that comes out is ripping off that series. Its extremely overused, similar to all the mission based gameplay that has been popping up lately.

Im gonna have to pick this game up when I get the cash. I barley played MGS2 and havent played MGS once! So it should be worth the money.

I'm pretty interested in picking this game up too. I'm not a very big Metal Gear fan (I don't particularly like the NES games) but I really enjoyed Sons of Liberty on the PS2 and since the gameplay seems almost lifted off of that game this will probably be a welcome addition to my Gamecube collection. I seem to grow more fond of the series with each release.

So what does Psycho Mantis say this time????

All I remember is that he was like "so, you like castlevania", and I was all like. :eek 2:

If he says nothing that will be a bummer, but oh well, the first game was always the best imo anyway. I'll pick this up when my wallet recovers from other purchases. :sob:

According to the book I got with the game, the game checks your memory card for saves from these four games: Eternal Darkness, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Brothers Mele, and Zelda: Wind Waker.

They re-did the voices? Does'nt sound like it to me.....oh well.

I plan on picking this up in the near future... I didn't get a PS2 until about 6 months ago (Huge mistake waiting to get one for so long, heh heh) and was going to get MGS1, but decided to wait for TTT. I already have MGS2:S to play after TTT.
