GP: On the PC, Doom 3 is going to be something of a resource monster. When it was first proposed as an Xbox game was there any concern about getting it to run on a console?

KB: John Carmack made some really good decisions in architecting the engine for scalability. We knew that PS2 and Gamecube were out of the question due to particular graphics requirements (global illumination, normal mapping, shadow volumes etc.), but we knew Xbox had a shot. The key concerns were memory and performance. With only 64MB RAM on the Xbox and a 733Mhz processor, we knew it would be quite challenging –- but not impossible. The team here was really excited to be working on this project -– a chance to work on Doom! -– so we were definitely going to take it on and prove that a great Xbox version could be made. Now, after many months of development, I think it’s safe to say that players will be stunned when they see the type of graphics fidelity that Doom 3 is able to present on the Xbox.

So PS2 and even Gamecube are incapable of a decent port of Doom 3? IM not suprised really especially concerning the PS2.

This is just me, but I prefer to play first person shooters on PC rather than a console.

I'm still gonna get Doom 3 on PC, even though I'm probably going to have to turn the graphics down so much that it'll look like the original Doom! LOL

I don't understand what the big deal about porting games to consoles is..

On average, a console outputs 720x480 resolution MAX. (And this is DVD quality resolution! RCA and RF connections are much lower!)

PC's on the other hand need to output 1024x768 minimum! Some people play games at much higher resolution.

The higher the resolution, the more processing.. But game consoles are at such a low res (same res as games used to be in the DOS era!) that the extra CPU & graphic power is not needed!

You also don't have the overhead of the OS, all the extra drivers you need to support, etc.. etc.. quickly one sees a console is easier to code for, and the performance is always garanteed!

Heck.. Look at Halo.. flies perfectly on the XBOX (except for the end scene, where they decided to display everything at once..) good like playing Halo on a P3 with 64MB of RAM!!!!

Every topic about this game turns into a pc vs. console grudge match. I am so sick of pc vs. console discussions they always end the same way.

Person A.) PC has better resolution, mods, control.

Person B.) Console is plug and play, no need to update drivers and such, instant multiplayer.

Whatever, just do your thing. At least this great game "hopefully it's great that is" is coming to both platforms, and since it was made for the pc I don't see the beef pc players would have.

Now Halo, that was a different story. :P

Yeah I didnt want this to become another PC vs. Console thread.
I think there pointless becuase if you have always liked one or the other there is no changing anyones mind.
Even though I dredd PC gaming as a whole all except real-time strategy.
Give me a good controller and my fav console anyday.

People keep saying controllers are horrible for FPS'.

I beg, BEG to differ.

I find the Xbox controller the perfect controller. (Big one. Not the shitty S one.) And very comfortable to use in FPS games.

I look forward to Halo 2 and DOOM 3. Two games that I KNOW I'm getting for my Xbox. Even if I don't buy another Xbox game after or before that, those games as well as Halo 1 and Serious Sam totally worth it. Oh, and SS2.

I am siding with Jasoco on this one! I agree 100%.
