Well, I got the PS2 today. Incredible condition. It doesnt look like it was ever played. Not a scratch on it. I rented a few games that I think are multi layers. They work fine. Life is good right now. :)

I think you missed the line that reads, "DREs are common, please take my machine so I can get a new one." ;)
Good deal, anyways. If you didn't already have a PS2, then I'd suggest getting Kingdom Hearts and FInal Fantasy X ASAP :)

Disk Read Errors. Many new games are going multiple layers on the disc so it has a high capacity (if I'm not mistaken). I believe the new Champions of Norrath is one of them. Anyway the older PS2 units are sometimes having problems reading these discs and are giving errors.
You MAY be in luck, though, as Sony is aware of these issues. If you run into errors with certain discs and you know they are multi-layered, contact Sony and maybe you can get the drive replaced for free or cheap.

If you have troubles with DRE's just stand the PS2 vertically rather than lying it flat horizontally. All games I used to get DREs on work fine vertically.

Please keep us updated on this. It seems too good to be true.
I mean really.
I had pictured you just being lucky enough to get one no one else bid on. But it was a BIN FOR $80. So you gotta let us know!

Roger that.
When playing Champions of Norrath with the system laid horizontally, it doesn't take long before some screen gets locked up. When I put the machine up vertically, never a problem. I have a launch-day PS2, by the way.

Well you almost had me beat till I saw it was getting dre's. I got mine for 90 BIN but I had to supply controller and cables, which I already had the cables, but still good deal nontheless.

Yea i will defintely keep you guys posted.
Two questions:
Is there a way to tell if a game has multi layers?
What has Sony been doing about this disk read error problem?

What has Sony been doing about this disk read error problem?Laughing and raking in more money.
I had a guy buy a PS2 yesterday and when I asked if he needed anything else, like a Memory Card so he could save the game he just bought, he said "No.. I already have one. I bought it when I had my old one."
"My old one died because I left it on for a week." (Rather than buying a card.) And he accidentally mentioned THAT to Sony so the warranty was voided. LOL. Sad, but them's the breaks. ;)
Not that that story had anything to do with this thread. I just had to say it.
Moral of the story is; Don't leave your PS2 on for a week, and DON'T mention you did to Sony.

When it comes to huge corporations, I have no feelings aout doing thing considered.. wrong..
If something I have breaks (my original PS2 still works great!) like when my Gmaecube started to lock. I didn't call any numbers.. I didn't call any support..
I just went and got a new one and switched em out. then took it back the next day..
Sometimes, when I need like a drill or something.. I'll buy it and take it back as defective 20 days later or so...
I don't believe in hell heh..

I just went and got a new one and switched em out. then took it back the next day..They're supposed to check the Serial Number.. Unless you used Mr. Blowdryer. In which case, don't they make sure the box ain't open?

Champions of Norrath is on a DVD-9 but it is not really very big.. like 3.7gig.. they put half the game on the other layer to keep it from being pirated..
Anyway someone just pushed the layers together and did some hacking so a DVD-R version is out on supernova.org..

There are only 2 at the moment. Xenosaga I and CoN..
Nothing for those older than the warranty.

Buy a new PS2 at Wal-Mart with cash and replace the broken one in the ones box. Return as a dead PS2. I suggest everyone with a PS2 V1-V6 do the same even if they still work.

That really was a steal.
Please bookmark this thread and let us know if it dies within a few months. I'm really hoping this works out for you. I'd actually be willing to spend $80 on a PS2. $200? No. $180? No. $80? Hell yeah.
