SNK Announces Three Atomiswave Titles
By David Smith
2/20/2004

As widely rumored over the past few months, SNK Playmore and Sammy are becoming closer and closer allies in Japanese arcades. At the AOU arcade exhibition today, SNK announced three new games for Sammy's Atomiswave arcade hardware, representing three of its most popular franchises.
Those games are as follows:

The King of Fighters 2004 (tentative title)
Samurai Spirits AW (tentative title)
Metal Slug 6
Speaking to Impress Game Watch, SNK's Kazuya Hirata explained that the Atomiswave hardware (a Dreamcast-based system similar to Sega's Naomi hardware) will enable SNK to realize games that weren't possible on the Neo Geo. These first efforts won't be drastic revisions of the series, though. KOF 2004 will employ a system similar to the new Neo Geo 2003, and while the new Samurai Spirits may feature substantial changes to its character design, its gameplay will remain familiar to players. Metal Slug 6, meanwhile, will support Sammy's AW-NET system for player data collection on magnetic cards.

Hirata also noted that SNK is considering moving other key series to the Atomiswave platform, depending on the success of its first three efforts.

With all three of its active arcade franchises moving to Atomiswave, however, it looks as if SNK has finally abandoned development for the venerable Neo Geo arcade hardware. Unless SNK has more Neo titles left to announce, Samurai Spirits Zero Special will be its last game on the platform when it hits Japanese arcades later in the spring. Surviving almost 15 years of active development, the Neo takes the title of longest-lived platform in videogame history by a comfortable margin.

So I guess the real question for us gamers and especially DC collectors is will any or all of these games be ported over to the Dreamcast since it would be a very easy port to say the least :hmm:

They'd be japanese ports if anything. I would be interested in the ports if I weren't pricing a home Atomiswave system...

....SNK addicts. We are sad indeed.

I didnt announce that this was "new" news.
anyway I agree an Xbox port would seem to be more obvious and very welcome at least on my part. especially concerning Sony's blacklisting of anything 2-D.

How much would a supergun cost to build or buy? I've heard that you can get an Atomiswave w/ GGX1.5 for around $400 (likely cheaper).
