Xbox price drop incoming?

The Magic Box (www.the-magicbox.com) reports that Walmart is circulating fliers that the Xbox is going to drop in price from $179.99 to $149.99 in about two weeks. Its under the March 15th news.

Looks like I may have to reconsider buying one now.

At $149, I wouldn't hesitate picking one up, if I didn't already have one.

What's to lose? You've got lots of great games from Sega, Xbox Live (which is justification enough in and of itself) and even if you don't plan on getting on Live, it's the easiest console to mod, and has the most possibilities when modded. Hell, at $179, it's already a great deal, let alone at $149. Oh, and it doesn't break down like a certain other company's console. I forget the name of it. I think it started with a "P" and ended with a "laystation 2." Halo LAN is great fun as well.

Price drops are good, I just wish their lineup wasnt soooooooooooo delayed. It is funny to think that the games they promoted for 03 either havent came out yet or are going to come out late 04. I dont think that it will affect sales, considering that the PS2 will probably follow. If it sounds like I am an Xbox hater, I am am not, just pointing out that their lineup has STILL been patchy and too dependant on ports.

Okay, before anyone starts with the fanboy nonsense, I'm the last person anyone would call a Sony fan. I just wanted to mention that my best friend, who's manager of the local Gamecrazy, get about the same percentage by sales of faulty Xboxes returned as he does PS2s.

That said, I might pick up an Xbox as well, now. If not now, definitely when it hits $99, if for no other reason than to mod and emulate.

I understand the dislike of Sony policies and all that, but by any possible measure the PS2 has more "worth buying" games overall than either Gamecube or XB. This isn't meant to knock the XBox - I love Halo and a good game of R6 on Live as much as the next guy - but when the PS2 produces a good 50-100 games that are well worth buying, I can't understand why it's knocked as much as it is.

As for damaged systems: Look at the condition of CD-based games at your local EB/GS and apply that treatment to game systems. It's no wonder so many systems (of every kind), especially systems with sensitive lasers, are damaged. I have yet to have a single system break down on me, despite 3 cross-country moves and fairly extensive play. Treat your things like the expensive electronics they are and the dangers of broken systems are minimal.

On second thought, I'll wait for them to release a game I really want to play before buying the system. There just isn't a game screaming PLAY ME NOW DAMNIT.

People knock the PS2 because it is at an untouchable level at the top of the console wars, does have the huge number of games, yet they don't allow the niche titles that they allowed during the PS1 for some strange reason. They aren't even allowing Capcom to port the PS2 versions of Viewtiful Joe and Killer 7. I personally just want to have an answer as to why they don't allow these games to be released.

I'll probably wait until it's $99. I have so many PS2 and GC games I haven't even played, and more I want to pick up. The XBox emulation stuff would be cool but both my laptop and my MAME cabinet are already crammed with emulators. I heard rumors that both PS2 and XBox were dropping to $149 for Memorial Day and either $129 or $99 for Labor Day. Sounds like September is the month for me.

I just spent $200 on a glorious Crystal Xbox(PAL) plus another $50 on having it modded.

I just got sick of waiting for MS to release a LE over here.

To me it is worth the extra expense.

The only hassle is that the system menu is 50hz which means I'll have to hook it up to my computer if I want to change anything. But that is supposedly patchable once the machine is modded.

With my luck they'll release the Crystal box over here AND drop the price to $99 :(

Too bad I already have both a Box and Cube. Both at the higher prices. I bought the Cube when it was new. $200. And I got my Xbox at $200 too. So lowering the prices aren't really gonna get to me unless they are $50.

You've got a good point (think N64 overkill). I've been thinking about sending my Xbox away to get modded and redesigned at the same time. For every cool looking paint/lighting alteration job there are about 50 of 'em that look like absolute crap, no wait, shit... They look like absolute shit. There was one I saw that was pretty cool though. It had a triangular shaped window over the CD drive (very nice looking).

Considering I had to import a Limited Edition, I would hardly condsider it LE overkill, like with the N64. Especially considering most of the LEs so far have had a rather limted print run.

DOA = 5000
PDO = 999
White = 1000
Translucent Green = 10000
Crystal = 10000

Though of the Jap launch one 50000 were made.


The PS2 platinum for instance had a print run of 2 million in Europe.

The Tales of Symphonia GC had a print-run of 500K.

since I already have a PS2 and Gamecube. If I had to do it over again, maybe I would have gotten a Box instead of PS2, I dunno...

Just thought I'd hop in here and mention that I was told by our Xbox representative that the price is offiicially dropping to $149 in the next 2 weeks. He mentioned that no one was supposed to know about it, but the Wal Mart ad gave it away.
