Howdy folks,
Thought this might be a good opportunity for me to start a topic of my own.

Went to a Goodwill this weekend with my girlfriend. Found a few insanely overpriced NES and 2600 games when I went into the electrical appliance section. There was a huge wall of VCRs, tape decks, and CD players. Wait a minute... thats no ordinary CD player. That's a Goldstar 3do! I wonder how much they want for it... On the back was the price tag, a little pink ticket marked $4.00!

After about a half hour searching for a controller and A/V hookups I realized the only thing 3do related in the entire store was the deck itself, with the power cord attached. No controllers, games, nothing. So, $4 later, I go home, find a SMS RF connector and power it up. Wait a minute... it seems to be loading a game! The damn console not only worked perfectly right off the bat but had a game (Blade Force, I think it was called) loaded into the drive!

So, overall, Im quite happy. Now, I have some questions for you experts, since 3do is far from my gaming forte.

1. What are the pros and cons to the different makes and models of 3do? Is the Goldstar unit a good one?

2. What are the genuinely fun games in the 3do library, and where is the best place to get 'em?

3. My Goldstar unit is in awesome shape except it seems to have a missing piece in the side, or at least missing some sort of expansion bay cover on the right side. Is tehre anything that was supposed to go into this expansion slot?

Many thanks!
-John

1. In my experience the Goldstar 3DO is not quite as reliable as the Panasonic FZ1, but for $4!

There was also the FZ10 which was a flip top model that had some small compatibility issues....also in Japan there was a 3DO by Sanyo.

2. There are quite a few games that I enjoy on 3DO but I think you should try

Need for speed
Gex
Road Rash
Captain Quasar
The Horde
Return fire

3. That is almost certainly the expansion bay for the FMV module..you dont need it for games, only if you want to watch video CDs.

yeah the 3do also have a lot of FMV games .. A lot of people dont like them cause they are repetitive... But Need for speed, road rash , captain quazar, luciennes quest could be some great games!

i have a goldstar model too and it work very well.. Also have an FZ-1 from panasonic that also work great .

you can find most of the games on ebay , of course , and if your lucky enough , on goodwill like the store you found yyour 3do for 4$ .. you lucky

Woo Hoo!

Bona Fide 3DO "ex" fan and collector here, I'd claim to have the entire library but I'm pretty sure I'm missing something stupid like one of the Fatty Bears games. I do have all the toughies though: DinoPark Tycoon, all of the Woody Woodpeckers, Lucienne's Quest, etc...

I've also got over 75 imports that were not released here. One of these days I'm gonna get to playing them.

My opinion? Doesn't matter unless you plan on using your 3DO for watching VCD's (which the Goldstar can support). My trusty FZ-1 still works great. If you want something a little exotic, try out the Sanyo TRY system (which used to be rather uncommon but now appears on eBay several times a month). Good news: 3DO consoles play domestic and import games.

I'm going to refer you to our "top 20" thread which can be found at http://www.digitpress.com/lists.htm

As mentioned, that's where the digital video module for playing VCD's goes.

Enjoy your system! I call myself an "ex" fan because for awhile 3DO was my favorite but when I go back to them nowadays they are by and large terribly DATED. You're still safe with the top 20 list, and any 2D game you can find works just fine. But once upon a time those 3D titles seemed like great stuff and now they seem like slide shows.

Game ON.
